Terminal or Instrumental Values

Instrumental values are methods of behavior that lack an end goal but provide a way that

accomplishes a goal. Personal characteristics and character traits such as independent and

imaginative create instrumental values. Terminal values, on the other hand, are the end goals

people achieve. Terminal benefits, in other words, are end goals that are delivered in someone's

lifetime (Tuulik et al. 152). The answer to the question of whether instrumental or terminal

values influence someone's behavior at work is that instrumental value tends to have more

influence. The reason behind this statement is because terminal values, as described, are long

term views. This means it takes one to have instrumental values to be affected because it is used

to achieve the terminal views. The mode of behavior, in other words, is connected to significant

values (Tuulik et al. 152). Regarding this, ambition is the only factor that drives people towards

working together to achieve a specific goal.

Since people are different, terminal values will change how they treat each other.

Usually, people have different goals, and when there is no agreement, then the goals cannot be

achieved. Similar to this situation, every job has challenges that take place each day. Unless a

long-term solution is developed, then the problem will still exist. The same idea applies in these

values; unless the instrumental values are tackled, then the terminal views will not be necessary

(Tuulik et al. 152). Therefore, both values connect, but instrumental values are the determining

factor of whether the terminal values will exist or not.

Conclusion

Instrumental values are methods of behavior that lack an end goal but provide a way that

accomplishes a goal. The mode of expression, in this case, is connected to instrumental values.

Therefore, significant values change or occur once terminal values have been altered. The

answer to the question is that its only terminal values that affect the behavior of people at work.
