Needs Analysis

What do students need to understand in order to obtain the learning objectives for this unit? What
is the context for their being in a second language class? Do they intend to use this language for
travel? To acquire a certificate like the DELF? Or simply to get by in their new country?
Ex. To visit Paris, students must learn how to ask and answer questions in a coffee shop
Knowing this, we can focus the task on hitting an outcome that asks students to “identify words that
are used to formulate a question (e.g., qui, quand, comment)”

Target Tasks
What will be the aim for this lesson? What is it that we want students to be able to demonstrate
they have learned? This is the organizing feature around which the syllabus is designed.
Ex. To demonstrate that students can interact with foreigners in a French country, they will be
asked to perform a short skit of a real-life scenario that would take place somewhere on the
Champs-Elysées

Pedagogic Tasks
What activities will be done in class to build the students awareness and understanding of the
intended learning outcomes? What skills will they need to learn in order to complete the target
task? This stage involves teaching through the sequencing and support of different skills to best
scaffold student learning.
Ex. To engage in conversation while shopping on the streets of Paris, students will need to be able
to combine many different grammatical skills with the use of a particular vocabulary. These include
 An understanding of money, numbers, and the associated vocabularies
 Asking how much something costs
 Understanding cultural norms when shopping in a populated area
 Describing different clothing
 Asking for articles in different sizes
 Etc.

Performance Tasks
What is the final task that students will be asks to complete to demonstrate what they have
learned? How will student knowledge be assessed?
Ex. In groups of 2, students will be asked to perform a short skit (either to the class or in a private
reception with their teacher) that models a likely scenario that they would encounter while
shopping in Paris. Students must use the structures they have learned this year to demonstrate to
their teacher that they are capable of speaking French with a native speaker.
