CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter contains the method and the procedures that are used by the researchers

to come up with the result.

Research Design

The researchers used quantitative-qualitative experimental method focusing on two

groups – the controlled and experimental group through administering pre-test and

post-test and interview about the “Technology-Based Instruction on Students’ Listening

Skill”.

Quantitative research is used for generating numerical data that can be used to

quantify attitudes, behaviours and other variables; formulate facts; uncover patterns

through various forms of surveys, face-to-face interviews and observations whereas

qualitative research helps to develop ideas or hypotheses for potential quantitative

research. It is also used to uncover trends in thoughts and opinions. Experimental

research is any research conducted with a scientific approach, where a set of variables are

kept constant while the other set of variables are being measured as the subject of

experiment. Experimental research is one of the founding quantitative research methods.

The researchers used this method because the study involves numerical data and patterns

of behaviors.

Research Respondents

The research has respondents from two identified sections of Cordova National

High School. They are the grade seven students and were selected by the school teacher

of the said school.

Research Environment
The research was conducted in Cordova National High School. It is one of the

many institutions sharing the Philippine Department of Education’s mission and vision in

addition to providing a venue for discovery and enhancing the full potential and skills of

every learner. It is an institution providing students with quality and technology-oriented

school instruction to make them globally-competitive, values-driven, and God fearing

individuals.

Cordova National High School is a public learning institution located in Day-as,

Cordova, Cebu. It has 3,054 students; 1,558 male and 1,496 female and 103 teachers

and non-teaching staff; 98 teachers, 1 principal, 1 assistant principal and 3 non-teaching

staff. It has 775 grade seven students; 433male and 342 female. The researchers chose

Cordova National High School because the said institution integrated ICT in their school.

The school have electronic devices which they are using during classroom discussion or

activities such as television, computers/laptop, speaker and wifi in which they can access

internet connection.

Research Instrument

The study used an adopted Cambridge listening skills test with two parts: vowel

distinction and listening comprehension test. On the first part, the researchers gave 40

questions to check the students’ listening skills in vowels distinction. On the second part,

the researchers used stories as springboard and gave 15 questions related to the stories to

check the students’ listening skills in listening comprehension. Both tests were

administered through pre-test and post-test.

Data Gathering Procedures

The researchers took the following procedures. First, the researchers sent a

transmittal letter to the school principal to allow the researcher to conduct a study in the

institution. The researchers waited for the letter approval. Second, explained to the

respondents what the study all about. Third, the researchers administered a pre-test to

the two groups on the first day, discussed topic to measure the listening skills of the

students using TBI integration to the experimental group and tradition method of teaching

to the controlled group on the second day and administered the post-test to the two

groups on the third day. Fourth, the data were analyzed. Lastly, the researchers

summarized the finding and wrote recommendations.

Treatment of Data

The study used Thematic Content Analysis which the researchers identify the

pattern of the respondents’ responses on perception of technology. It is one way to

examine patterns or themes within data important to the description of a phenomenon or

condition associated to a research question. This is used for the qualitative data. And

for the quantitative data, the researchers used T-Test. It is a type of inferential statistic

which is used to determine if there is a significant difference between the means of two

groups which may be related in certain features.
