A Field Visit Report on Manglore and Lakhnauti Minor regarding On-Farm System

Brief Introduction
In order to fully appreciate the importance and necessity of Diagnostic
Analysis of an Irrigation System, M.Tech 1st Year students taking the
subject ‘On Farm Development’ under Irrigation Water Management are
divided into four groups, namely:
1. Main System Group
2. On Farm System Group
3. Cropping System Group and
4. Socio-economic System Group.
Under the guidance of Prof Ashish Pandey, each group is given specific
tasks so that the whole system under study will be properly analyzed in all
fields.
Each group had given power-point presentation on dt………on how the
group would conduct the analysis, and now, on the arrangement made by
prof Ashish Pandey, a field trip was conducted on 1 st October, 2018 to
Manglaur and Lakhnauta minor of Upper Ganga Canal.

On Farm System Group

The On Farm System Group, consisting of seven members whose names

are given in the table hereunder, has been formed with the objective of
assessing the On Farm components of diagnostic analysis. This team will
emphasize mainly on this component wherever applicable but will also
highlight other pertinent points observed which are of due importance for
diagnostic analysis.

A Field Visit Report on Manglore and Lakhnauti Minor regarding On-Farm System

Aasaph Nagar Cross-Regulator

The Aasaph Nagar Regulator is located at downstream to the Roorkee of Upper
Ganga Canal. From this point, there are two parallel Deobandh branch situated
on the right bank of the upper Ganga Canal. Originally there was a single
Deobandh canal, which was made during British emperor. However, another
parallel canal of about same capacity has been constructed in order to increase
the culturable command area as there is no scarcity of water in the off-taking
Upper Ganga Canal.

Left Main Rajwaha (SHARKI)

Just in the upstream of Aasaph Nagar X-Regulator, there exists a distributary
called Left Main Rajwaha (Sharki) situated in the left bank of the Upper Ganga
canal. The sharki is located at 18.4 mile d/s of Bhimgoda Barrage.
Features Details
Off take source Left Main Distributary (SHARKI)
Off take R.D. 29.709Km
Discharge 0.349 cumec
Total Canal length 10.041 Km
CCA 1835 ha
Outlets 78 Pipe Outlets

Manglore Minor
The manglore minor was not in operation during the visit. The off-taking source
was found to be diverted due to the construction of Highway from Roorkee to
Dehradun. In many places there was siltation prevailed.
Features Details
Location Latitude: 29°48'43.864"N
Longitude: 77°52'30.742"E

Off-taking from Left main distributor (SHARKI

RAJWAH)

Offtake R.D. 0.913 km

Discharge 4.9 cusec or 0.139 cumec

Total canal length 2.414 km

CCA 236 ha
Head works Non gated
Outlets 12 pipe outlets

Techno-economic Issues of Manglore Minor

SN PROBLEMS REMEDIES
1. Deteroration of cross-section Quick maintenance of minor
should be carried out.
2. Problem in offtake due to diversion Diversion work could be handled
of sharki distributary. in better way.
3. Formation of rill due to soil erosion Principle of soil erosion and its
at the bank(fig.13) control measure should be adopted.
4. Excessive weed infestation Weeds impact and its management
should be discussed among the
farmers.
5. Excessive siltation. Proper channel regulation should
be done.

SHADAULI DISTRIBUTORY
Old Deoband branch canal feeds this distributary. There is a control gate at the
head of this distributary so as to regulate the flows from Old Deoban branch canal.
It runs for 20km and its total culturable command area is 2849 ha with 6 cumec
designed discharge. However, it was not in operation during visit and hence its
bed was noticed having lots of siltation.

Lakhnauti Minor
The Lakhnauti minor was off-taken from Sadaugauli distributary. During the visit
the minor was not in operation. Details of Lakhnauti minor has been given in the
below table:
Features Details
Length 4.828 km
Discharge 11.000cusec
Culturable command area 715 ha
PPA 765 ha

Techno-economic Issues found in Lakhnauti Minor

SN Problems Remedies
1. Water Pollution at Intake  Disposal of industrial/domestic waste
(fig17) into the shadaugauli distributary
should be stopped and monitored
regularly.
 High penalties should be fixed.
2. Illegal outlets. (fig 18)
3. Weed infestation
4. Deterioration of cross
section

Features Detail
Type Non Modular, Pipe
Diameter 6 Inch
Water Course Lined (C.C. lined)
Turnouts Unregulated cuttings on water course
Chak condition Fully cultivated with sugarcane and
paddy

Conclusion & Recommendation

Constructing an irrigation system doesn’t guarantee its success. Rather better and
efficient management is key for the success of irrigation system. During the field
visit, both the Manglore and Lakhnauti Minors were not in operation which gave
us the opportunity to monitor the physical conditions of the system.

 Cross section of both the minors were found having excessive weed
infestation and mobile in nature which is to be corrected before further
operations.
 As the systems were not in operation, their performance evaluation were
not measured. Hence next visit is to be arranged for evaluation.
