Exercise
Required for all students: Obtaining
your course credentials
Section 1 Exercise 1
04/2019
Cartography. MOOC
Instructions
Use this guide to obtain the credentials required to complete this course. You must obtain
these course credentials even if you already have an ArcGIS organizational or public
account.
Time to complete
Approximately 15-30 minutes.
Introduction
You will need two different credentials (user names and passwords) to complete this course:
In this exercise, you will document your Esri credentials, and then you will obtain and
document your course ArcGIS credentials.
Important: You must complete this exercise to obtain the course ArcGIS credentials that
have been created for you, even if you already have an ArcGIS organizational or public
account.
• Esri credentials give you access to the course and all of its videos, exercises, polls,
quizzes, and so on.
• ArcGIS credentials give you access to the ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Pro software
used to complete the course exercises.
Important: These credentials are not interchangeable. You cannot use your Esri
credentials to access the software, and you cannot use your ArcGIS credentials to access
the course.
a Create a table like the one below to document your credentials for future reference.
My Cartography. credentials
You may create your table in many ways. For example, you may print out this page, make a
table in a word-processing program such as Microsoft Word, or draw a table on a piece of
paper.
What is most important is that by the end of this exercise, you have a completed table. You
will need refer to the completed table throughout the course.
Note: If you create your own table, do not forget to include the URL that goes with each
credential.
b In the cell labeled (2), enter the password that goes with your Esri user name. Remember
that you created your Esri user name and password. This is the password you used with
your Esri user name to sign in to this course.
My Cartography. credentials
Since you do not know your course ArcGIS user name, you will use the Forgot Username link
to have it emailed to you.
e Type the email address that you used to create your Esri user name and click Continue.
Note: If you are unsure what email address to enter, refer to this Common Question (https://
bit.ly/2Uj457E).
If you do not receive this message within five minutes, refer to this Common
Question (https://bit.ly/2OSfwx0).
h In the email message, find the organizational account that has "_cart" included in the user
name.
This is your course ArcGIS user name.
Note: You may notice that the email includes the text "Esri Access: disabled." Don't worry! It
is supposed to say this.
If you receive an email from ArcGIS Notifications but it does not contain
your "_cart" user name, refer to this Common Question (https://
bit.ly/2uN9vIz).
i In your credentials table, in the cell labeled (3), enter your course ArcGIS user name.
j Return to the ArcGIS Online tab in the private or incognito browser window.
k Type your course ArcGIS user name and the temporary password, 1969*EsriMOOC.
m Follow the instructions on the screen to change your password and set your security
question.
n In your credentials table, in the cell labeled (4), enter your new, permanent course ArcGIS
password.
You are done using ArcGIS Online for now. It is good practice to close the private or incognito
window after you complete an exercise or when you take a break.
o In ArcGIS Online, in the upper-right corner, click your name and select Sign Out.
My Cartography. credentials
Make sure to save your table in a safe and convenient place. We also suggest you take a
photo of it with your phone. Having a photo will allow you to look up your credentials if you
cannot access the actual table.
When signing in to either the course or ArcGIS Online, always refer to your table to ensure
that you use the correct credentials. If you are not seeing the webpage you expect when you
sign in (or are automatically signed in), please sign out, navigate to the correct target URL and
sign in again being careful to use the correct credentials.
• Whenever you type a URL with "esri" in it, use your Esri credentials.
• Whenever you type a URL with "ArcGIS" in it, use your ArcGIS credentials.
• Whenever you open ArcGIS Pro, use your ArcGIS credentials. You will learn more
about accessing ArcGIS Pro in the next exercise.
Conclusion
Congratulations! You've now obtained and documented the required credentials for this
course. You will refer to your completed credentials table throughout the course.
