INTRODUCTION

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Jabalpur Municipal Corporation was established as Jabalpur Municipal Committee under

Lucknow Nagar Palika Act of 1864 under which Dy. Commissioner was named as Chairman
of Municipality. W. H. Newhard became the first Chairman of Municipality.

In 1935 , the state government took over the total administration of the Municipal Committee,
and Murli Manohar Seth became its first Administrator. After Independence, in 1948 the Nagar
Palika Act (Act No.3-1948) was passed. Under this Act on 1 June 1950 Jabalpur Nagar Nigam
was established and the city was divided into 30 wards. A 43-member committee was set up in
which 34 members were directly elected, 6 were selected members, and 3 nominated members.
On 20 October 1959 , in a special called meeting, the motto of the organization was decided as
Anirvedah Shriyomoolam. Later on , it was officially formed in 1992. Nowadays , it is
Headquartered Near Teen Patti Chowk, Wright Town, Jabalpur, MP. It’s official language is
Hindi.

Jabalpur Municipal Corporation is responsible for the civic infrastructure , development and
administration of the city of Jabalpur , located in Madhya Pradesh, India. The organization is
known as JMC , in short . This civic administrative body administers an area of 53 km2 .
JMC is headed by Dr. Swati Godbole , presently the Mayor of Jabalpur , and the current
collector of Jabalpur is Mr. Bharat Yadav ( IAS ).

The Commissioner of Jabalpur is the highest officer of Municipal Corporate Office, who is
responsible for the departments of public works, revenue and tax, water supply, planning and
development, infrastructure , fire brigade, health and sanitation, finance and accounts etc.
Presently , the city is divided into 79 Wards. Each ward elects a corporator. The winning party
elects a Council of Members , who is responsible for various departments. The Mayor is then
chosen by Council of Ministers.
