Title: Review on Features, performance and location requirements for a Solar Chimney power

generation system (Focus on Malaysia).

Solar Chimney power plant (SCPP) is a type of solar updraft power plants (SUPP) which
utilize the solar radiation to generate electrical energy for utility usage. The system consists of solar
collector, chimney and turbine. The solar collector absorbs the heat from the solar radiation in order
to heat up the air inside the chamber below the collector. The heated up air will pressurize and
rotates the wind turbine. This wind turbine is connected to the generator which will generate
electricity for household usage. After flowing through the wind turbine, the exhaust gas will be
expelled out to the atmosphere via the chimney. It is a low temperature thermal power plant which
uses the solar radiation to heat up the air inside the collector

SCPP is a potential energy generation system which can be implemented in rural areas of
developing countries. This is because the power plant can be built to supply electricity to rural areas
that is off grid. In Malaysia, this power plant has potential to be implemented in Sarawak rural areas
which is not connected to the utility grid. There are some areas in Sarawak which are not connected
to the grid due to the geographical factor of state which comprises of rainforest and mountainous
terrains. According to Chen (2016), the urban to rural ratio of Sarawak is 52:48 with about 1.2 million
people living in rural areas which is yet to be developed. Currently, approximately one-third of the
village in the rural areas does not have 24-hour electricity. This means there are approximately
40000 home with over 250000 people.
