DRY SHIPS & FUTURE CONSIDERATIONS The major modern challenge for ships and shipping companies is the correct and swift implementation of the highly technical and complicated environmental legislation for ships. The objective of this fast learning course is to make its participants quickly familiar with the main environmental regulations applicable to the operation of dry ships, as adopted by the International Maritime Organization, with references, where necessary, to applicable US and EU regulations. A course necessary for all those engaged in the operation of dry ships – particularly for shipping executives and shipping companies’ personnel but also for newcomers and advanced students wishing to enter the industry with some important knowledge!
The Course Focus on :
1. The regulations of MARPOL 1973/78 for the prevention of pollution from ships: familiarization with the provisions of the MARPOL Annexes relating to: oil, sewage, garbage, and air emissions (SOx, NOx, PM). Special reference to the major issue of the implementation of the IMO 2020 sulphur limit and the available solutions for compliance. 2. Greenhouse gas emissions/IMO data collection system & MRV: the major modern issue relating to the development of the future contribution of shipping to the fight against climate change and the current stand of negotiations at IMO/MEPC. Presentation of the already applicable data collection systems at IMO and EU level. 3. Ballast water management: the regulations of the BWM Convention 2004, as applicable since September 2017 and the major issues relating to its implementation, including at US level. 4. Ship recycling: introduction to the IMO regulations of the Ship Recycling Convention, 2009 and the EU Ship Recycling Regulation (applicable since 31.12.2018). 5. Anti-fouling systems: introduction to the IMO regulations of the AFS Convention, 2001, prohibiting the application of harmful anti-fouling systems on ships.
