Madhya 19.167 (BRS 1.1.11) "'When first-class devotional

service develops, one must be
anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyaḿ devoid of all material desires,
jñāna-karmādy-anāvr ̣ tam knowledge obtained by monistic
ānukūlyena kr ̣ ̣ sn
̣ ānu- philosophy, and fruitive action.
śīlanaḿ bhaktir uttamā The devotee must constantly
serve Kṛ ̣ sn
̣ a favorably, as Kr
̣ ̣ sn
̣ a
anya-abhilāṣitā-śūnyam — without desires other desires.'

without material desires (such as those for meat-
eating, illicit sex, gambling and
addiction to intoxicants); jñāna — by the
knowledge of the philosophy of the monist
Māyāvādīs; karma — by fruitive activities; ādi —
by artificially practicing detachment, by the
mechanical practice of yoga, by studying
the Sāńkhya philosophy, and so on; anāvr ̣ tam —
not covered; ānukūlyena — favorable; kr ̣ ̣ sṇ a-
anuśīlanam — cultivation of
service in relationship to Kṛ ̣ sn
̣ a; bhaktih ̣ uttamā —
first-class devotional service.

"'Bhakti, or devotional

service, means engaging all our
senses in the service of the
sarvopādhi-vinirmuktaḿ Lord, the Supreme Personality of
tat-paratvena nirmalam Godhead, the master of all the

hr ̣ a hr
̣ ̣ sīkeśa- senses. When the spirit soul
sevanaḿ bhaktir ucyate renders service unto the
Supreme, there are two side
sarva-upādhi-vinirmuktam — free from all effects. One is freed from all
kinds of material designations, or free from all material designations, and one's
desires except the desire to render service to the senses are purified simply by
Supreme Personality of Godhead; tat- being employed in the service of
paratvena — by the sole purpose of serving the the Lord.'

uncontaminated by the effects of speculative
philosophical research or fruitive
̣ ̣ sīken
activity; hr ̣ a — by purified senses freed from
all designations; hr ̣ ̣ sīka-īśa — of the master of the
senses; sevanam — the service to satisfy the
senses; bhaktih ̣ — devotional service; ucyate — is
called.

̣ a-nāmādi "'Therefore material senses
na bhaved grāhyam indriyaih ̣ cannot appreciate Kr ̣ ̣ sn

soul is awakened to Kr ̣ ̣ sn

service by using his tongue to
chant the Lord's holy name and

taste the remnants of the Lord's
and qualities are all on the absolute

̣ a's name, form, qualities, pastimes
understand who Kr ̣ ̣ sn
̣ a really is.'
and so on; na — not; bhavet — can
be; grāhyam — perceived; indriyaih ̣ — by the
blunt material senses; sevā-unmukhe — to one
engaged in His service; hi — certainly; jihvā-
ādau — beginning with the tongue; svayam —
personally; eva — certainly; sphurati — become
manifest; adah ̣ — those (Kr ̣ ̣ sn ̣ a's name, form,
qualities and so on).

anasaktasya visayan The vairägya of that person who
yatharham upayunjatah employs objects suitable for
nirbandhah krsna-sambandhe devotional development, while
yuktam vairagyam ucyate remaining detached from them,
is said to be suitable for bhakti.
The objects should be
persistently related to Krsna
