Madhya 19.167 (BRS 1.1.11) "'When first-class devotional


service develops, one must be
anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyaḿ devoid of all material desires,
jñāna-karmādy-anāvr ̣ tam knowledge obtained by monistic

̣ ānu- philosophy, and fruitive action.

anuśīlanam — cultivation of
service in relationship to Kṛ ̣ sn
̣ a; bhaktih ̣ uttamā —
first-class devotional service.

senses in the service of the
sarvopādhi-vinirmuktaḿ Lord, the Supreme Personality of
tat-paratvena nirmalam Godhead, the master of all the

sevanaḿ bhaktir ucyate renders service unto the
Supreme, there are two side
sarva-upādhi-vinirmuktam — free from all effects. One is freed from all
kinds of material designations, or free from all material designations, and one's
desires except the desire to render service to the senses are purified simply by
Supreme Personality of Godhead; tat- being employed in the service of
paratvena — by the sole purpose of serving the the Lord.'

uncontaminated by the effects of speculative
philosophical research or fruitive
̣ ̣ sīken
activity; hr ̣ a — by purified senses freed from
all designations; hr ̣ ̣ sīka-īśa — of the master of the
senses; sevanam — the service to satisfy the
senses; bhaktih ̣ — devotional service; ucyate — is
called.
Madhya 17.136 (BRS 1.2.234) TRANSLATION

atah ̣ ̣ sn
̣ a-nāmādi "'Therefore material senses
na bhaved grāhyam indriyaih ̣ cannot appreciate Kr ̣ ̣ sn
̣ a's holy
sevonmukhe hi jihvādau name, form, qualities and
svayam eva sphuraty adah ̣ pastimes. When a conditioned
soul is awakened to Kr ̣ ̣ sn

and so on; na — not; bhavet — can
be; grāhyam — perceived; indriyaih ̣ — by the
blunt material senses; sevā-unmukhe — to one
engaged in His service; hi — certainly; jihvā-
ādau — beginning with the tongue; svayam —
personally; eva — certainly; sphurati — become
manifest; adah ̣ — those (Kr ̣ ̣ sn ̣ a's name, form,
qualities and so on).

BRS 1.2.255
anasaktasya visayan The vairägya of that person who
yatharham upayunjatah employs objects suitable for
nirbandhah krsna-sambandhe devotional development, while
yuktam vairagyam ucyate remaining detached from them,
is said to be suitable for bhakti.
The objects should be
persistently related to Krsna
