DIFFERENCE BETWEEN QAULITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

1. Using graphic organizers, differentiate qualitative and quantitative research.

QUALITATIVE RESEARCH QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

MEANING Qualitative Research is a Quantitative research is

scientific method of defined as a systematic

observation to gather non- investigation of phenomena

numerical data. This type by gathering quantifiable data

of research "refers to the and performing statistical,

FORM OF DATA COLLECTED Data such as open-ended Based on precise

responses interviews. measurements.

2. Define the different types of research and provide 3 examples for each types of

research and cite the reference

 Field research- is defined as a qualitative method of data

collection that aims to observe, interact and understand people

while they are in a natural environment

Example:

 Bernstein, L. J., & Robertson, L. C. (1998). Illusory conjunctions of

color and motion with shape following bilateral parietal

lesions. Psychological Science, 9, 167-175.

 Urberg, K. A., DeÈirmencioÈlu, S. M., & Pilgrim, C. (1997). Close friend

and group influence on adolescent cigarette smoking and alcohol

use. Developmental Psychology, 33, 834-844.

 Kerfoot, F., Koshyl, V., Roganov, O., Mikhailichenko, K., Gorvova, I, &

Pottage, D. (2007). The health and well-being of neglected,

abused, and exploited children: The Kyiv Street Children’s

Project. Child Abuse and Neglect, 31, 27-37.

 Library Research – is the step-by-step process used to gather

information in order to write a paper, create a presentation, or

complete a project

Example:

 Magazine Article

 Dictionaries

 Hand Books
 Laboratory Research - study may use special equipment and cells or

animals to find out if a drug, procedure, or treatment is likely to be

useful in humans

 Examples:

 Psychological and Microbiological experiment

 Milgram's experiment on obedience

 Loftus and Palmer's car crash study.

WORKSHEET NO. 1

Characteristics, Process and Ethics of Research

1. Is the observance of research ethics is important. Why? or Why not?

 Research ethics are important for a number of reasons. They promote

the aims of research, such as expanding knowledge. They support the

values required for collaborative work, such as mutual respect and

fairness. This is essential because scientific research depends on

collaboration between researchers and groups.

2. What are the major characteristics of research and select at least 3

characteristics and discuss each.

 Reliability is a subjective term which can not be measured precisely,

but today there are instruments which can estimate the reliability of

any research. Reliability is the repeatability of any research, research

instrument, tool or procedure. If any research yields similar results each

time it is undertaken with similar population and with similar

procedures, it is called to be a reliable research. Suppose a research is

conducted on the effects of single parenting on the class

performance of the children. If the results conclude that it causes low

grades in class, these results should have to be reliable for another

sample taken from a similar population. More the results are similar;

more reliability is present in the research.

 Validity is the strength with which we can make research conclusions,

assumptions or propositions true or false. Validity determines the

applicability of the research. Validity of the research instrument can

be defined as the suitability of the research instrument to the research

problem or how accurately the instrument measures the problem.

Some researchers say that validity and reliability are co-related, but

the validity is much more important than reliability. Without validity,

research goes in the wrong direction. To keep the research on-track

define your concepts in the best possible manner so that no error

occur during the measurement.

 Accuracy is also the degree to which each research process,

instrument, and tool is related to each other. Accuracy also measures

whether research tools have been selected in best possible manner

and research procedures suits the research problem or not. For

example if a research has to be conducted on the trans-gender

people, several data collection tools can be used depending on the

research problems but if you find that population less cooperative the

best way is to observe them rather than submitting questionnaire

because in questionnaire either they will give biased responses or they

will not return the questionnaires at all. So choosing the best data

collection tool improves the accuracy of research.

Importance of Research

Research is the systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in

order to establish facts and reach new conclusions. It is very important in our life

because without it we can't have the things that we are using now . Research is a tool

for us to gain more knowledge because when we do a research in a specific area it

can help us to discover new things and it is very useful in everyday that we exist in the

world because everything is a research.

Research is very essential not only for the students but to the professionals

especially when they are going to build a business it can help them to be more

innovative and to live life easier. It is very essential nowadays to have a knowledge of a

specific problem in order to have action towards unity for everyone. And to be more

productive, a way of showing that we are ready for the change and to nurture

ourselves of being mindful. As part of the new chapter of this generation it could really

help for us to minimize problem on how to solve and to have a peaceful nation.

In summary of research it really help for us to be able to show and being a

patronize of changing of a specific issue. However, research has a pros and cons in

terms of result but we can sure that we could have the best result ever. The solution will

help us to have an action and systematic, towards the changes that we could really

help us to be more productive as well. But we promote first on know how to keep

moving forward of the advantages that we could really help in our society as part of

the big role of changes. By taking another shot for us individual to look for the success.

On how to build more innovation of our learning.
