Ship Structures II
Group work
For the ship already selected by each group, design its main structure following DNV 2016 ship
classification rules with length greater than 100 m. Start by presenting the available information on
the ship: main characteristics, load, volume or passenger capacity, and, lines and general distribution
plans (AutoCAD). You have to consider the following special requirements in your design:
i. Define number and position of bulkheads, select double bottom height (if applicable) and
select the framing system for the ship. Starting with the values observed in the MaCarmen III,
select spacing between girders and stiffeners, and prepare a structural layout plan with three
views, considering the general distribution plan.
ii. Calculate and select required thicknesses for bottom, double bottom, side and deck (available
values are integer multiple of 1 mm).
iii. Calculate required shear force and bending moment and check primary ship hull bending.
iv. Select thickness, flange width and web height for girders subject to lateral load.
vi. Combine and check local stresses in bottom and deck, including figures of points of analysis.
vii. Check stability of deck plate in case of transverse framing, and longitudinal stiffener in case of
longitudinal framing.
viii. Prepare a table with main characteristics of the ship structure and compare them with those
from other built ships.
ix. Prepare engineering plans of the structure using AutoCAD (structural lines plan, one
watertight bulkhead, and mid-ship section).
The report must have the format of a technical memory to be submitted to the Maritime authority, and,
cannot be longer than 8 pages and use Times New Roman 11 characters. Also, plans of item ix have to
loaded in the Sidweb, in dwg format.
To be loaded in the Sidweb by January 26th, 2020, and it must be printed for the final exam
