Homework #4: Dynamic loading November 19th/2019

Group work

Experimental:

Objective: to compare vibratory experimental and theoretical inertial quasi-static

strains in a clamped beam without and with a concentrated mass on its end.

Theoretical introduction: Analyze the bending moment distribution of a clamped

beam considering it in quasi-static equilibrium, subject to a certain acceleration. First
only include the uniformly distributed mass of beam, m. Consider a second case with
the beam mass, and, a concentrated mass on its end, MC. To analyze the second case,
you may include the influence of the concentrated mass as a boundary condition:

y y
EI c, m(x) EI c, m(x) Mc

L L

Procedure: Force the base of the beam to oscillate with harmonic motion of slowly
varying frequency, and register strain at the clamped end, and, acceleration at the base
and end of the beam. With the amplitude of the harmonic motion and its frequency you
may calculate the acceleration. Repeat the process with an increase in amplitude of base
oscillation.

Analysis of results: Plot theoretical and experimental strain at the clamped end of the
beam versus frequency of oscillation. Also plot the acceleration of the free end of the
beam vs the acceleration of the shaker, which corresponds to the clamped end of the
beam. Relate the closeness between accelerations with the closeness of theoretical and
experimental strain registers.

Control measures for safe practice: In this test the vibration may cause the nuts to get
lost and the specimen to jump and hit the operator. This may cause minor damages to
the students. To reduce these risks of damage, students must not wear rings or chains,
wear hard point boots, and maintain its hair restrained. Before each test the assistant
must check that the nuts are installed with pressure rings, and they are tightly secured.
Also during the tests, students are not allowed to pass the safety cone placed around the
shaker.
