Shear force and bending Moment.

Objective:

• To gain practical insight into the concept of shearing force and bending moment
experienced by a beam when subjected to a transverse load at a specific cross-section.

• To determine the magnitudes of the counteracting shear force and counter bending
moment.

• To conduct a comparative analysis between the theoretical predictions and the experimental
findings.

Apparatus

 Shear force and bending moment apparatus

 load hanger
 vernier caliper
 loads

Theory:
The shearing force is described as the combined algebraic sum of the transverse components
of the forces acting on one side of section 2.

The bending moment is characterized as the collective algebraic sum of the moments
produced by the forces on one side of the section.

Formula used:

∑ F Y =0
∑ M =0

Procedure:

pg. 1
1. Initially, we measured the combined weight of the hanger and the load.
2. We applied the load at a specific location or point.
3. Subsequently, we maintained equilibrium by applying forces at various locations.
4. These measured values were then compared with their corresponding theoretical
predictions.
5. Similarly, we achieved equilibrium at various points and with different loads.

Experimental Data:

LOAD COUNTER COUNTER COUNTER COUNTER

(g) SHEAR SHEAR LOAD BENDING BENDING
FORCE (g) MOMENT LOAD
(g)

X1 80 80 80 40 40
100 100 100 50 50

X2 80 80 80 80 80

100 100 100 100 100

X3 80 80 80 120 120
100 100 100 150 150

Result and conclusion:

In summary, we consistently maintained equilibrium in the beam by applying loads. Our

calculations exhibited minimal errors, largely due to the nearly frictionless nature of the
pulleys and the completeness of the apparatus, leaving no room for missing components or
factors.
