Industry Profile

Introduction

The Textile industry in India traditionally, after agriculture, is the only industry that has
generated huge employment for both skilled and unskilled labor in textiles. The textile industry
continues to be the second largest employment generating sector in India. It offers direct
employment to over 35 million in the country. The share of textiles in total exports was 11.04%
during April–July 2010, as per the Ministry of Textiles. During 2009-2010, Indian textiles
industry was pegged at US$55 billion, 64% of which serves domestic demand. In 2010, there
were 2,500 textile weaving factories and 4,135 textile finishing factories in all of
India. According to AT Kearney’s ‘Retail Apparel Index’, India is ranked as the fourth most
promising market for apparel retailers in 2009.

India Textile Industry is one of the leading textile industries in the world. Though, it was
a predominantly unorganized industry even a few years back, but the scenario started changing
after the economic liberalization of Indian economy in 1991. The opening up of economy gave
the much-needed thrust to the Indian textile industry, which has now successfully become one of
the largest in the world.

India textile industry largely depends upon the textile manufacturing and export. It also
plays a major role in the economy of the country. India earns about 27% of its total foreign
exchange through textile exports. Further, the textile industry of India also contributes nearly
14% of the total industrial production of the country. It also contributes around 3% to the GDP of
the country. India textile industry is also the largest in the country in terms of employment
generation. It not only generates jobs in its own industry, but also opens up scopes for the other
ancillary sectors. India textile industry currently generates employment to more than 35 million
people. It is also estimated that, the industry will generate 12 million new jobs by the year 2010.

India is the second largest producer of textiles and garments in the world. The Indian
textiles and apparel industry is expected to grow to a size of US$ 223 billion by 2021, according
to a report by Technopak Advisors. This industry accounts for almost 24% of the world’s spindle

capacity and 8% of global rotor capacity. Abundant availability of raw materials such as cotton,
wool, silk and jute as well as skilled workforce have made the country a sourcing hub.
The textiles industry has made a major contribution to the national economy in terms of
direct and indirect employment generation and net foreign exchange earnings. The sector
contributes about 14 per cent to industrial production, 4 per cent to the gross domestic product
(GDP), and 27 per cent to the country's foreign exchange inflows. It provides direct employment
to over 45 million people. The textiles sector is the second largest provider of employment after
agriculture. Thus, growth and all round development of this industry has a direct bearing on the
improvement of the India’s economy.

Growth
The Indian textile industry is set for strong growth, buoyed by strong domestic
consumption as well as export demand. The most significant change in the Indian textiles
industry has been the advent of man-made fibers (MMF). India has successfully placed its

recorded an increase of 10 per cent and filament yarn production grew by 6 per cent in the month
of February 2014. MMF production increased by about 4 per cent during the period April 2013–
February 2014.

2013–February 2014. Cloth production by mill sector registered a growth of 9 percent in the
month of February 2014 and of 6 percent during April 2013–February 2014. Cloth production by
power loom and hosiery increased by 2 percent and 9 percent, respectively, during February
2014. The total cloth production grew by 4 percent during February 2014 and by 3 percent
during the period April 2013–February 2014.
Textiles exports stood at US$ 28.53 billion during April 2013–January 2014 as compared
to US$ 24.90 billion during the corresponding period of the previous year, registering a growth
of 14.58 per cent. Garment exports from India is expected to touch US$ 60 billion over the next
three years, with the help of government support, said Dr A Sakthivel, Chairman, Apparel Export
Promotion Council (AEPC).

reach US $ 141 billion by 2021. The industry is the second largest employer after agriculture,
providing direct employment to over 45 million and 60 million people indirectly. The Indian
Textile Industry contributes approximately 5 percent to GDP, and 14 percent to overall Index of
Industrial Production (IIP).
The Indian textile industry has the potential to grow five-fold over the next ten years to
touch US$ 500 billion mark on the back of growing demand for polyester fabric, according to a
study by Wazir Advisors and PCI Xylenes and Polyester. The US$ 500 billion market figure
consists of domestic sales of US$ 315 billion and exports of US$ 185 billion. The current

Functional Departments

Introduction

Functional management is the most common type of organizational management. The

organization is grouped by areas of specialty within different functional areas (e.g., finance,
marketing, and engineering). Some refer to a functional area as a "silo". Besides the heads of a
firm's product and/or geographic units the company's top management team typically consists of
several functional heads such as the chief financial officer, the chief operating officer, and
the chief strategy officer. Communication generally occurs within a single department. If
information or project work is needed from another department, a request is transmitted up to the
department head, who communicates the request to the other department head. Otherwise,
communication stays within the department. Team members complete project work in addition
to normal department work.

The main advantage of this type of organization is that each employee has only one manager,
thus simplifying the chain of command.

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT (HRM) DEPARTMENT

Definition

HRM is concerned with people who work in the organization to achieve the objectives of
the organization. It concerns with acquisition of appropriate human resources, developing their
skills and competencies, motivating them for the best performance and ensuring their continued
commitment to achieve organizational objectives.HRM refers to activities and functions
designed and implemented to maximize organizational as well as employee’s effectiveness.

The goals of Human Resource Management are to help an organization to meet strategic
goals by attracting and maintaining employees and to manage them effectively. The basic
premise of the academic theory of HRM is that humans are not machines; therefore we need to
have an interdisciplinary examination of people in the workplace. Field such as psychology,
industrial and organizational psychology, industrial relations, sociology and critical theories play
a major role.

Human Resource Management function includes a variety of activities and key among
them is deciding what staffing needs you have and whether to use independent contractors or
hire employees to fill these needs, recruiting and training the best employees, ensuring they are
high performers, dealing with performance issues and ensuring your personnel and management
practices conform to various regulations. Activities also include managing your approach to
employee benefits and compensation, employee records and personnel policies.

One widely used scheme to describe the role of HRM, developed by Dave
Ulrich, defines four fields for the HRM function

Strategic business partner, Change agent, Employee champion and Administration.

However, many HR functions these days struggle to get beyond the roles of administration and
employee champion and are seen rather as reactive as strategically proactive partners for the top
management. Human Resource Management comprises several processes. Together they are
supposed to achieve the above-mentioned goal. These processes can be performed in an HR
department, but some tasks can also be outsourced or performed by line-managers or other
departments.

A key point in finance is the time value of money, which states that purchasing power of one unit
of currency can vary over time. Finance aims to price assets based on their risk level and their
expected rate of return. Finance can be broken into three different sub-categories: public
finance, corporate finance and personal finance.

MARKETING DEPARTMENT

Marketing is a process of exchanging goods and services between producers and

consumers. It is a human activity directed at satisfying needs and wants of the customers.
Marketing is the activity which a company is able to generate the revenue for the functioning of
the organization.

Marketing is about communicating the value of a product, service or brand

to customers or consumers for the purpose of promoting or selling that product, service, or brand.
The oldest – and perhaps simplest and most natural form of marketing – is 'word of mouth'
(WOM) marketing, in which consumers convey their experiences of a product, service or brand
in their day-to-day communications with others. These communications can of course be either
positive or negative. In recent times, the internet has provided a platform for mass, electronic
WOM marketing (e-WOM), with consumers actively engaged in rating and commenting on
goods and services.

In for-profit enterprise the main purpose of marketing is to increase product sales and
therefore the profits of the company. In the case of nonprofit marketing, the aim is to increase the
take-up of the organization’s services by its consumers or clients. Governments often employ
social marketing to communicate messages with a social purpose, such as a public health or
safety message, to citizens. In for-profit enterprise marketing often acts as a support for the sales
team by propagating the message and information to the desired target audience.

Marketing techniques include choosing target markets through market analysis

and market segmentation, as well as understanding consumer and advertising a product's value to
the customer. From a societal point of view, marketing provides the link between a society's
material requirements and its economic patterns of response. Marketing satisfies these needs and
wants through the development of exchange processes and the building of long-term
relationships.

SWOT ANALYSIS

Meaning

A SWOT analysis is a structured planning method used to evaluate the strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities and threats involved in a project or in a business venture. A SWOT analysis can be
carried out for a product, place, industry or person. It involves specifying the objective of the
business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and
unfavorable to achieve that objective. Some authors credit SWOT to Albert Humphrey, who led
a convention at the Stanford Research Institute (now SRI International) in the 1960s and 1970s
using data from Fortune 500companies. However, Humphrey himself does not claim the creation
of SWOT, and the origins remain obscure. The degree to which the internal environment of the
firm matches with the external environment is expressed by the concept of strategic fit.

 Strengths: characteristics of the business or project that give it an advantage over

others.
 Weaknesses: characteristics that place the business or project at a disadvantage
relative to others.
 Opportunities: elements that the project could exploit to its advantage.
 Threats: elements in the environment that could cause trouble for the business or
project.

Identification of SWOTs is important because they can inform later steps in planning to achieve
the objective.
