CHEMICAL PRESTRESSING

• Chemical prestressing is a term, which describes a way of inducing stresses into internal
reinforcement without any mechanical actions
• The chemical pre stressing is also called as: Self stressing
CHEMICAL PRESTRESSING COMPOSITION

• By Lossier of France in 1944 • generally expanding cements consist of

• 75% Portland cement.
• 15% alumina cement.
• 10 % Gypsum.
CHEMICAL PRESTRESS CURING

• The degree of expansion can be controlled by varying the conditions of Curing

• The expansive process primarily takes place during the first few days of curing and is
highly dependent on water treatment.

• Adjusting the amount of expansive admixture and taking into consideration properties of the
reinforcement and concrete curing conditions, chemically prestressed members can be
designed and produced, with distinguishingly higher load bearing capacity and durability.
CHEMICAL PRESTRESSING

• The linear expansion of the cement in chemical pre stressing is about 3-4%
• The expansion of the concrete is restrained by: High-tensile steel
CHEMICAL PRESTRESSING SUMMARY

• MAKES USE OF EXPANDING CEMENT • DISADVANTAGE;

• LINEAR EXPANSION OF CEMENT IS 3- LOW VALUE OF PRETRESS
4%
• PRESTRESS IS DEVELOPED WHEN THE
STEEL WIRES CHECK THE EXPANSION
OF CONCRETE
• INTITIAL PRESTRESS UPTO 4-8.5N/mm2
• SUITABLE FOR PIPES, WALS & SLABS,
SHELLS ETC.
