Dear Friends,

A man goes into a perfume shop and says to the owner, “I would like two kilos
of onions”. The owner, of course, is surprised. Why would someone come into
a shop fragrant with perfume and ask for smelly onions? But isn’t this what we
do with the Master? He has Nam and the perfume of love available for us.
Instead we ask him to cure our cancer, give us more money for a bigger house,
punish those we dislike or what is even worse, we ask him to do our
meditation for us.
Baba Ji only has love on offer. Everything else is our creation. Discontentment,
anger, jealousy, laziness, greed are all man made. A positive attitude, simran
and shabd are the cures for all our ailments. We run to the doctor if we don’t
feel well and take all the medicine he gives us. But we have the ultimate
medicine and we leave it on the shelf. We chop onions but expect the
fragrance of lavender.
There comes a time in all our lives where we have to hold ourselves
accountable for our actions. We have to look ourselves in the eye and say:
Enough is enough! If we are committed to a Sant Mat way of life then our
commitment needs to be complete. We can’t just be careful about our
vegetarian diet but then be casual and self indulgent about our moral actions.
If we live all our vows to the fullest then each strengthens the other. If we do
our meditation it is easier to make good choices in our everyday life. We begin
to master our own mind and then positivity is strengthened and reinforced.
Positivity and our commitment to the Satguru become the foundation for
everything that we do and say in life.
If he is giving us a fragrant perfume do we want to return that with the bad
breath of onions? He is inside us in his shabd form. Therefore he is aware of all
our thoughts and actions. What a scary thought, that he knows everything
about us. Our soul, the individual drop of shabd inside us, and the shabd form
of the master that is merged with our soul, is held captive by our thoughts and
deeds. Our soul is desperate to be liberated from the prison walls built by our
mind. Lust, anger and greed strengthen the prison walls. Kindness, harmony
and love weaken them. Simran especially can dissolve our prison bars.
But most of all it is ego that causes us all the pain and suffering in our lives.
The minute we see people as different from us, from a different caste or
country or profession then we are announcing to our mind that who we are is
better than who they are. Me and mine overwhelm love and respect. They
create separation, disharmony and ultimately aggression and pride which
keep our soul in pain and our mind in a state of agitation. Me and mine leads
to arrogance and self-importance and these feelings lead only to sadness and
disappointment. We are never satisfied so we search again and again for
anything that will give us a sense of contentment. But it is only the shabd and
the Satguru that create an atmosphere of contentment and satisfaction.
If we truly believe that the master is inside us and knows everything then
would not we change the way we live? We wouldn’t compromise on our
values and vows. But most of us only pay lip service to the idea that he knows
everything. We say it but only when it is convenient. When we are doing
actions that we are ashamed of we easily forget that he is inside us. Isn’t our
greatest pleasure in life to satisfy our master? He asks so little of us. He asks
that we be vegetarian, don’t take drugs or alcohol, live a positive life style and
do our meditation. All of us can do as he asks. These aren’t complicated or
challenging choices. Instead they give us peace of mind and steadiness of
character. And most of all, if we try our best then we please him.
We are so lucky. What have we done to deserve what we have? Have we even
earned our health or wealth or children? No, they are part of our destiny and
ultimately we can’t take credit for them. Our destiny is his grace sending us in
a direction where we can work out the great karmic play of give and take,
action and reaction. But we have so much more. We have the True Master, the
embodiment of the shabd, and he is doing his seva to push us, pull us, and
guide us towards the direction of love, the direction of contentment and joy.
We have everything we need to fulfil our destiny. And our destiny is not
towards worldly gain but towards his ocean of love. Let’s enjoy the fragrance
of his love for us.
Yours affectionately,
Bill
