A. ELICIT Have an introduction by asking the students to catch their attention. Laptop and television
(5 minutes) What are the things you usually consider whenever you plan to have a Climate are affected by the
picnic? Most probably, you will consider the time, place, and most of all, the following factors:
weather. Weather affects your day-today activities. In your previous year level, 1. Latitude
you had encountered different factors that affect weather. These factors help 2. Altitude
to determine the weather for each day. 3. Distance from bodies of
water
4. Ocean currents
5. Topography
B. ENGAGE Guess the Question or Unscramble the Letters Answer
(5 minutes) 1. Pattern of weather in a region over a long period of time. (TIALMCE)
2. The condition of the atmosphere at a particular place and time. 1. Climate
(REHAEWT) 2. Weather
3. The marked east-west parallel to the equator. It describes the distance of 3. Latitude
a land area from the equator. (TADLUEIT) 4. Altitude
4. The height above sea level. (DUTATLIE)
C. EXPLORE  Let each group conduct activity 1 and 2 on pages 185 and 186. Materials:
(20 minutes) Activity 1: When the Sun’s Rays Strike Module, manila paper, marker,
Study the Illustration below: pencil or ballpen, ruler

Answers
Activity 1
Q1. 23.5°
Q2. Equator
Q3. It is due to the tilting of the
earth’s axis and the shape of the
earth.
Q4. They receive less amount of
heat.
Guide Questions: Q5. Due to the tilting of the earth’s
Q1. How much is the tilt of Earth’s axis? axis, places near the equator
Q2. Which part of the earth receives most of the Sun’s rays? more heat making the air
Q3. Why does the amount of heat received by places far from the equator temperature higher.
become less? Q6. When the area is farther from
Q4. Why are the coldest places on Earth found near the poles? the equator, the air temperature is
Q5. Why are places with high temperature found at the equator? lower resulting cold climate. When
Q6. How does latitude affect latitude affect climate? the place is closer to the equator
You have noticed that most of the sun’s rays strike vertically in the places the air temperature is higher
near the equator. This makes the temperature higher in these areas, resulting which results in a warm climate.
in warm climate. Places that are not always vertically hit by the sun’s rays
experience cold climate. As latitude increases, the smaller the angle of the
sun’s ray strike the surface. Therefore, when the area is farther from the
equator, the air temperature id lower. When the place is close to the equator,
the air temperature is higher.
Do you think the altitude of the place might affect the climate? How does
altitude affect climate? The next activity will guide you in answering these
questions.
 Start the lesson by posting the following questions:
a. Where do people usually go during summer vacations? Activity 2.
b. Why do they go there? Q7. Baguio
c. Why is it cold there? Q8. Manila
Activity 2: The Higher, the Cooler
Note: Emphasize that there
Procedure:
1. Study the Table 2.1 below are other factors that

Guide Questions:
Q7. Which place is the coldest? Q8. Which place is the hottest?
2. Construct a scatter graph based on the data above.
Guide Question:
Q9. Based on the data, what is the relationship between altitude and
temperature of a place?
D. EXPLAIN Three Climatic Zones
( 15 minutes) Average temperatures cool with increasing latitude, producing well-defined
climatic zones on the planet.
a. The Tropic Zones extend from the equator north to the Tropic of
Cancer at 23.5 degrees north to the Tropic of Capricorn at 23.5
degrees south. This is a region of generally warm temperatures and
lush tropical vegetation.
b. The Temperate Zones extend from the Tropics of Cancer and
Capricorn to the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, which are located at 66.5
degrees north and south latitude respectively. These regions
experience moderate temperatures and large temperature variations.
The summers are hot and the winters cool.
c. The Polar Zones extend from the Arctic and Antarctic Circles to the
poles. In these regions, temperatures are cold and vegetation sparse.

 The altitude of a place will affect the air temperature. Mt. Kilimanjaro is
located in Africa and found near the equator. It stands 5895 m above sea
level . the peak of this mountain is covered by ice. How is this possible?
That’s because the air temperature decreases as the altitude increases.

Mt. Pulag
October 13, 2019
3rd Highest Mountain in the
Philippines
 Why that is during summer, many people visit Baguio City? Obviously, the 2,926 MASL
reason is the cold climate there. It has an annual average temperature of
16°C. It has elevation of 1435 m above sea level.

 Why do mountain climbers wear jackets and thick clothes when they go
up to the mountain? The air temperature decreases as the altitude
increases. For every 1000 m, there is a drop of 6.5°C. at higher
elevations, there is less air. The air molecules are farther apart, thus
making the air less dense. Lighter air cannot absorb much heat, making
air temperature is due to the decrease in air pressure.

E. ELABORATE  The air temperature as the altitude increases. Places with higher
(8 minutes) elevations have cold climates.
 For every 1000 m, there is a drop of 6.5°C. The decrease in the air
temperature is due to the decrease of air pressure.
 Climate is influenced by many factors. Temperature and precipitation
determine the type an area has. Temperature is influences by the factors
such as latitude, altitude, distance from the sea, and ocean currents.
Precipitation is affected by the prevailing winds and the presence of
mountains.
F. EVALUATE Quiz # 6 Answer Key:
(5 minutes) Direction: Modified True or False: Write T if the statement is correct and if it is 1. hotter
incorrect change the underlined word/numbers to make the statement 2. T
3. T
right.
4. T
1. The nearer the equator the colder air temperature. 5. Altitude
2. The decrease air temperature is result by the decrease of air pressure. 6. less
3. The earth tilted about 23.5 ° 7. decreases
4. For every 1000 m of elevation, the temperature is a drop of 6.5°C. 8. T
5. Latitude is the height above sea level. 9. Baguio City
6. At higher elevations, there is more air. 10. Weather
7. As the altitude increases, the temperature also increases.
8. The peak of the mountain that has 5000 m and above in elevation is
possible to have ice.
9. In the Philippines that has the highest elevation above sea level is
Tagaytay City.
10. Climate is the condition of the atmosphere at a particular place and time
G. EXTEND Assignment Answer
(3 minutes) 1. How would you describe the climate of the place you live? 1. The climate in the Philippines is
2. What are the effects of the current changing climates? always hot and humid with heavy
3. How important are accurate climate predictions? rainfall all year round. The heavy
rainfall nourishes tall trees and
other plants, forming a dense rain
forest.
2. Answers may vary. Extreme
weather patterns, destruction of
ecosystems, and extinction of
some important species are some
of the effects of climate change.
3. Having accurate climate
predictions will help the society
plan and prepare for unexpected
changes. This will also ensure the
welfare of the environment and
the people of the present and the
future generations as well.
