BRIEF INTRODUCTION
When there’s a volcano there is a magma, which is the hot
molten rocks materials beneath the earth’s surface. Geothermal
energy is the source of geothermal power plant that produce
electrical energy.
Geothermal energy has been used as a source of electricity
in a different countries for thousands of years. In the Philippines
our geothermal power plant

are found in the following places: Bacon,-Sorsogon;
Calacan,Laguna; Kidapawan; North Cotabato; Tiwi, Albay;
Tongonan, Leyte.

HOW GEOTHERMAL ENERGY GENERATED?

To produce geothermal-generated electricity, wells, sometimes a
mile (1.6 kilometers) deep or more, are drilled into underground
reservoirs to tap steam and very hot water that drive turbines
linked to electricity generators. The first geothermal generated
electricity was produced in Larderello, Italy, in 1904.

5
This diagram illustrates how the geothermal energy transformed into
electrical energy:
1. The cold water pumped don to the injection well at least 4.5 km depth. As the
cold water reach the geothermal zone (hot rocks) it will become hot
2. Hot water pumped up to the production well until it reach the condenser
where the hot water produced steam.

3. The steam which is the moving vapor has enough energy to push and make the
turbine to rotate.
4. As the turbine rotates it makes a generator to be functional or powered and
produced electricity that will distributed to the different networks.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Geothermal Energy
Since geothermal energy source is a renewable resources therefore it is
one of the cheapest production of electricity. Aside from that the heat from the
earth’s interior never stop.so therefore the electricity’s interruption is very
minimal. Therefore it is more stable and reliable resources of electricity supply.
In every positive ways, still there is a negative ways. But in geothermal
power energy there’s only very limited disadvantages. Since the geothermal
energy main source is magma therefore there’s a gas such as hydrogen sulfide
produced that might affect the environment and lives of living things as well. The
location of geothermal power plant is prone to earthquakes because it is located
near the volcanoes.
Since we learned that one of the disadvantages of geothermal power
plant is that it is located with near the volcano, therefore it is necessary for the
owner and employees to be aware of when does the volcano erupt for them to be
prepared. Here are some signs that we can say the volcano will erupt:
1. There’s a frequent occurrence of earthquakes and the intensity is increasing.
2. Steaming activity are shown.
3. Deformation of volcano.
4. There’s a small changes in heat flow.
6

5. Changes in the composition of fumaroles gases.

6. Plant nearby suddenly die.
7. Formation of new thermal areas and/or the reactivation of old ones.
8. Increase in the temperature of hot springs.
9. Drying ups of springs/wells a nearby volcano.
10. Landslides and rock falls not associated of rains.
