You are a trader traveling on the Silk Road for the first time. It is the year 200. Be sure
when writing your journal entries that you keep the year in mind...your entries should
make sense for that time period!

Journal Entry #1
Dawn, April 5, 200 - Chang’an.
I am going to head out onto the Silk Road from Chang'an soon. I am going to take the
main route so that we might avoid getting lost on hard routes. That gets rid of one of our
difficulties but not all. Some difficulties are animals, bandits, and sand storms. I know there will
be more because of stories people tell from their own expeditions.
I will be trading Confucian lessons, silk, ceramic vases, orange tree seeds, paper, and Iron .
There are many bandits that lurk around the silk road trying to steal from people so they can
make a profit, this can be a big treat to us. There are all these thoughts that are bad rushing
through my mind so I am scared that they will come true.

Journal Entry #2
Evening, June 1, 200 - Dunhuang.
We are at the Dunhuang oasis! So many religions are being talked about. I think it is
because we are all from different places and have are own ideas. We traded a Confucian
lessons book for some Buddhist prayers at Dunhuang. We visited the caves of the thousand
monks and say a lot of new things. Did you know they call it the caves of the thousand monks
because about a thousand monks built it? I saw lots of scrolls and shrines as well as religious
paintings! Did you know Dunhaung has a very strong impact on artwork around the world!
There are so many fascinating things to see with all this art in Dunhuang.

Journal Entry #3
Midday, June 12, 200 - Gobi Desert.

We are in the Gobi desert the sandstorms are especially terrifying now that we have lost
a camel and driver carrying 30 bolts of silk. There are 500,000 square miles to cover! The only
signs are made of animal bones, but you can also follow other camels poop. We have heard
some strange noises but know better than to chase them around… We might get lost. If you
want to avoid getting lost you should stay in the middle of your caravan.
I feel like falling over and taking a nap along the side but know better because they will
leave me behind. We stop at small oasis occasionally, but there are not many. I hope I can push
through and make it through the desert. All that I can see is sand, sand, and more sand.
We will be at Makaranda in about a few months, if everything goes well!

Journal Entry #4
Afternoon, September 3, 200 - Marakanda
We are finally at Makaranda! We have made some trades here and along the way. The
trades were a hundred bolts of silk, 10 ceramic, and 10 bolts of silk. We got a 200 Ferghana
horses to pick up on the way back. Since we are talking about Makaranda let me tell you what I
think. Woah! This is the biggest place ever, has anyone ever gotten lost in these walls? They
have beautiful rugs maybe I can use some leftover things to trade for some. There is lots of
good food because of the good ground, we can give our camels and ourselves good food.
Stronger people can help us load or camels before leaving we will be to our final destination
Antioch!

Journal Entry #5
Evening, April 22, 201 - Antioch.

We are finally at our final destination! We have traded 500 orange tree seeds for 500 grape
vines, 50 sheets of paper for 5 rhinoceros horns, 500 bolts of silk for gold, 50 bars of iron for 30
roman colored glass vases. We will be home in about 14 months. It was so exciting and
definitely worth it. I think the way back will be easy until we get 200 horses. Did you know that
silk is loved so much by the Romans that they got drained from their gold. Antioch is one of the
largest cities in the roman empire and I get to see it. (Me from the year of 224 is just saying that
the Sassasians overthrew the Partian empire) .I learned this all on my amazing journey down
the silk road, which I hope to travel on soon!
