Context and Rationale

Students’ academic performance has been an integral part of the Philippine

educational system as it is considered to be the precedence towards the

development of humanity. Moreover, the Department of Education has set

educational goals for the learners’ academic achievement and one of those is to

reinforce learning through making assignments. Luistro (2010) emphasized that

homework or assignments have been part of the pupils’ lives in their schooling.

Common homework or assignments may include a period of reading to be done

and writing to be completed, problems to be solved and projects to be worked o,

among others. The purpose of which is for the pupils to increase their knowledge

and improve their abilities and skills.

The students are already expected to perform all the activities in school

including the compliance of assignments. However, there is an issue regarding the

pace of grade 9 students of Dodong Escaño Memorial High School towards their

assignments. The teachers considered this as a problem since the students have

been constantly getting low scores in their assignments. Since homework is done

at home and it is beyond the supervision of the teacher, the factor that was

determined by the researchers is the parents’ involvement and supervision

towards their children’s assignments. Dawson (2001) stated that parental

involvement in homework has a more powerful influence on achievement. While

parents may be tempted to throw up their hands when their children resist
homework or lack the skills to do it, school success may depend on parent’s

willingness to help overcome obstacles to homework completion. Parents can help

children succeed with homework by providing clear messages about the

importance of homework and specific support strategies.

The possible advantage in strengthening the parents’ support to their

children in making assignments or homework may effect to the increased

academic performance of the learners. The hours in a school day and the amount

of time a teacher can spend individually with students are limited. As a result,

teachers need the understanding and help of parents and families and supporting

classroom instruction and learning outside school hours. Parents can lend this

support by taking an interest in the homework that their children bring home and

finding the most effective ways to help the learners with their assignments. Thus,

the students to be identified as the respondents to this research have the necessity

to be intervened with the support of their parents. This study will also determine

the effectiveness of the parents’ supervision in the respondents’ assignments

towards the advancement of the students’ academic performance.
