Effects of Homework to 10-STE Students

I. Introduction

Homework has also been a topic of public and scientific concern. Even though the idea of

homework has been around for a long time, little is known about how it helps students do better in

school. In their efforts to implement policies that will support and enhance student learning, school

board officials have struggled for a considerable amount of time with this problem. Teachers are

criticized for either having too little or too much homework, and parents are frequently seen as

concerned.

Homework is defined as tasks assigned to students by school teachers that are intended to be

carried out during non-school hours. The definition excludes in-school guided study, home courses,

and extracurricular activities such as sports teams and clubs. Homework has been a part of student’s

lives since the beginning of formal schooling in the Philippines. However the practice has been

alternately accepted and rejected by educators and parents.

Leading educators have argued for a decade that homework is necessary to raise students

educational standards. While others assert that homework aids in the development of skills,

responsibility, and task management. As long as it is needed as a means of learning, motivation and

coping with academic benefits, that’s why homework is beneficial. Students may benefit from

homework if certain conditions are met. It is believed that older students benefits more that younger

students.

Homework can be a useful learning opportunity. They are also said to have non-academic

advantages, such as assisting students in developing routines, skills, and responsibility. Research

shows that homework can help students do better on class tests. Students who completed their

homework scored higher on examination tests than students who did not. According to research,

homework has no bearing whatsoever on elementary school students, whereas it has a greater impact

on students in secondary and higher education.
