Once our golden fiber jute was well-known all over the world but now we do not
have the golden age like before. The glaze of jute at that time, we can still find in the Golden
Fiber the first product of Akij group. One of the biggest conglomerates of Bangladesh is Akij
group which start its journey in early forties established by Mr. Sheikh Akij Uddin. Akij began
its business in a small way with Jute Trading which is also known as golden fiber of Bangladesh
by which they earned highest amount of foreign exchange. After that they diversify their
business in manufacturing Handmade Cigarette which is widely known as Bidi in the year of
1952.

In the year of 1950 Akij Company bring a new product line named akij Bidi and this
business gives them the strength to go ahead. As many women work for producing handmade
cigarette, so this business gave a big opportunity to them to get involved in this business. Akij
Bidi is the only product of Akij group which is sold directly to the customers. With the time Akij
Bidi enlarges their business and acquires Dhaka Tobacco Industry in 1966. After that again they
acquires Dhaka Tobacco Industries Leaf Processing Plant in 1981which only produce tobacco
for the Bidi, cigarette as well.

 Akij Cement is now fifth-largest cement manufacturing company in Bangladesh, it
was established in 1995. Akij Cement became the first company who turn out hurtful fly ash free
cement. The company¶s initial target is to utilize the existing capacity and get a maximum
output, but the existing low pressure of gas and nagging power crisis are holding back its
potential. More or less every company faces some difficulty at some point in accomplishes
business; Akij Group is not an exceptional. Due to energy crisis Akij Cement fall short to meet
the demand, which is one of the threats for Akij Group of company. Consumers have faith in
Akij Cement products and they believe that Akij Group never compromises with its excellence.
Akij is the name of trust and quality. However, Akij Composite Cement is the only brand in
Bangladesh that contains 72-79 per cent cinder, a 7-14 per cent up that follows the standards lay
down by the government. Akij Cement imports 48-53 grade cinder from Thailand, Indonesia and
Japan. Sonar Bangla Cement Ltd. is another cement industry conduct by Akij Group that
established in 1998. It is also said that, ³Nobody can question the quality of their product as
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have found the strength of their
cement best´.

Besides expansion, Akij also plans to project into some new businesses such as
ceramics. Akij groupis a group that can make anything marketable because they cando develop
to horizontal the supply of different products which they sometimes need internally.

Akij Group invites application for several units and Akij Particle Board Mills
Limited is one of units that occupied in producing quality tiles for long years effectively from the
year of 1996. Since 2001 Akij Particle & Hard Board Mills Ltd. has come with the best particle
board in Bangladesh. The main purpose is to produce and supply international standard Particle
board to meet the require of Architect, Interior Designers & Furniture Manufacturers in the
country.

With afford less hard work Mr. Bashir Uddin run the business successfully. He also believes that
group means business and it continues will to do so.
