1. PURPOSE
These laboratory advisory guidelines provide procedural information for laboratory workers to follow when disposing of waste
generated inside the premises of SPC Microtech Analytical and Testing Laboratory

2. SCOPE
These guidelines apply to all workers and guests who work within a laboratory environment at SPC MAT Lab that generate and/or
dispose of any type of waste.

3. RESPONSIBILITY

4. DEFINITIONS

5. PROCEDURE

7. RECORDS

7.1 General Principles

7.1.1 All potential waste streams that arise from laboratory operations needs to be assessed and an appropriate
disposal route selected prior to waste being generated.
7.1.2 Waste should be collected in a suitable container and labelled. See Appendix B – Summary of Hazardous
Waste Generated.

7.1.3 Main points for consideration are:

7.1.3.1 Minimise waste and do not accumulate large amounts in the laboratory.
7.1.3.2 Segregate waste - have a separate residue container if you are generating a large amount of any particular
type of waste. Ensure the waste container is compatible with the waste you are collecting.
7.1.3.3 Label the waste residue container with the appropriate waste label.
7.1.3.4 Store waste in a suitable area prior to collection. For example, chemicals and solvents should be stored in
ventilated areas and residue container lids must be secure. Ensure container is not leaking and no
spillage on the exterior of the container. Primary container should be placed in a suitable bund.
7.1.3.5 Handle waste only if you are aware of the hazards associated with the waste and appropriate risk controls
are used.
7.1.3.6 Dispose waste as per relevant guidelines.
7.1.3.7 Record all disposals on Waste Tracking Sheet to ensure evidence of correct waste management.

7.2 Co-Mingled (Mixed) Hazardous Waste

7.2.1 Waste that contains multiple hazards is classified as “co-mingled”.
7.2.2 Co-mingled hazardous waste should be disposed in a manner that best addresses ALL hazards.
7.2.3 Do not attempt to dispose of comingled hazardous waste before contacting the Pollution Control Officer.
7.2.4 Segregation of the same type of waste contaminated with different hazards may be necessary e.g.
contaminated sharps into separate, labeled containers to segregate chemical and biological contamination.
7.2.5 Never mix incompatible waste in the one bin or bag.

7.3 Hazardous Waste Streams

7.3.1 Filter paper, gloves, tissues, paper towel, benchcote, spent silica, and sample vials that have been
contaminated with hazardous chemicals should be placed directly into a chemically contaminated waste bin

or bag.

7.3.2 Special Exceptions for Chemically Contaminated Waste

7.3.2.1 Always refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) to determine chemical compatibility and recommended waste
disposal procedures. Certain chemicals require specific disposal procedures.
7.3.2.2 Class 1 (Explosive), Class 4.2 (Spontaneously Combustible) and Class 4.3 (Dangerous When Wet) waste
cannot be disposed by regular methods.
7.3.2.3 Halogenated solvent waste is collected in waste containers, and clearly labelled as halogenated solvent.
Halogenated waste must be kept separate to other organic solvents as mixtures can react or even
explode (mixtures of acetone and chloroform).
7.3.2.4 Cyanide waste must be placed in an appropriate waste container and the solution kept alkaline at all times.
7.3.2.5 Highly reactive substances such as amines, phosphorus compounds, acetic anhydride, acetyl chloride and
reactive metals should never be placed in general disposal containers with other waste.

7.3.3 Waste Chemicals

7.3.3.1 Waste chemicals can take various forms including solvents, aqueous solutions, dry powders, and
unwanted old chemicals.
7.3.3.2 The SDS for each chemical must be checked to ensure compatibility of materials for mixed chemical
residue containers.
7.3.3.3 Where possible, mixing of chemicals should be avoided to prevent unexpected reactions from occurring.
7.3.3.4 A bulging waste container must be dealt with immediately by contacting Security.
7.3.3.5 The waste container should be compatible with the residue material placed within.
7.3.3.6 If the waste is a liquid, residue containers are approved strong, plastic sealable containers.
7.3.3.7 Transfer large volume of wastes to the Waste Storage Area.

7.3.3.8 No hazardous chemical substances should be disposed down drains.

7.3.3.9 All enquiries concerning wastes discharged through the sewerage system must be directed to PCO.

7.3.3.10 Generally chemical waste should be segregated according to its properties and according to the
Environmental Management Bureau , such as:
7.3.3.10.1 aqueous acidic
7.3.3.10.2 aqueous alkaline
7.3.3.10.3 halogenated
7.3.3.10.4 non-halogenated
7.3.3.10.5 general hazardous waste – powders etc.
7.3.3.10.6 toxic
7.3.3.10.7 potentially infectious materials

7.3.3.11 Hazardous Waste labels are available for each of these generic categories according to EMB
guidelines.
7.3.3.12 Affix completed Hazardous Waste labels to the hazardous waste residue container.
7.3.3.13 If a chemical reagent bottle has lost its label and the identity of the substance is unknown, label with
“Caution unknown substance - Do not use”.
7.3.3.14 These bottles can be taken directly to Waste Storage Area for pick up.
