CONCRETE MIX PROPORTIONING

C TARGET MEAN STRENGTH FOR MIX PROPORTIONING

TMS = fck + 1.65 s
Where
TMS = target average compressive strength at 28 days
f'ck = characteristic compressive strength at 28 days
s = standard deviation
At site, standard deviation, s = 2.312 N/mm2
Therefore, target Mean strength = 35 + 1.65 x 2.312
= 38.81 N/mm2

D SELECTION OF CEMENT CONTENT

From Contract Agreement Cl:4.4.1

Minimum cement content = 400 kg/m3
As experience TM 182(B) & TM 183(B) cement content used 400 kg/m 3

E SELECTION OF WATER CONTENT

From Table 2 of IS 10262:2009, Maximum water content for 20mm nominal Maximum size of aggregat
186 Kg/m3 for 25mm to 50mm slump.

Estimated water content for 200mm slump = 186 x (1+ (3x6)/100)

Water content = 219.48 Kg/m3

As superplasticzer is used, the water content can be reduced up to 30% and above
In this mix design 30% water has been reduced.
Hence, Water content = 219.48 X 0.70
= 153.636 Kg/m3

F SELECTION OF WATER - CEMENT RATIO

Water Cement ratio = 153.636/400

= 0.384
From Contract Agreement Cl:4.4.1
Maximum Water - cement ratio = 0.40
Therefore water cement ratio = 0.384 />0.4
Hence, Ok.

CONCRETE MIX PROPORTIONING
G PROPORTION OF VOLUME OF COARSE AGGREGATE AND FINE AGGREGATE CONTENT

From Table 3 of IS 10262:2009, volume of coarse aggregate corresponding to 20mm size aggregate
fine aggregate (Zone IV) for water - cement ratio of 0.50 = 0.66

In the present case water cement ratio is 0.384, Therefore, volume of coarse aggregate is required t
increased to decrease the fine aggregate content. As the water cement ratio is lowered by 0.116
proportion of volume of coarse aggregate is increased by 0.0232(at the ratio of -/+ 0.01 for every -/+
change in water-cement ratio).

Therefore corrected proportion of coarse aggregate = 0.66(1+0.0232)

= 0.675

For Pumpable concrete these values should be reduced by 8 percent.

Therefore volume of coarse aggregate = 0.675x0.92

= 0.62
Volume of fine aggregate content = 1-0.62
= 0.38
AS per Grading 20:12.5 =60:40
H MIX CALCULATIONS
The mix calculations per unit volume of concrete shall be as follows

a Volume of Concrete = 1 m3

b Volume of cement = (Mass of cement/Specific Gr. of cement) x 0.001

= (400/3.12) x 0.001
0.143 m3 0.035714286 0.0087719
`
c Volume of water = (Mass of water/Specific Gr. of water) x 0.001
= (153.636/1.000)*0.001
= 0.155 m3

d Volume of Admixture = (Mass of admixture/Specific Gr. of admixture) x 0.001

= (4.4/1.28)*0.001
= 0.0026 m3

e Volume of all in Aggregate = 1-(b+c+d)

= 0.700 m3

f Mass of coarse aggregate = e x volume of coarse aggregate x Specific Gravity of CA

= 0.715 x 0.62 x 2.68 x 1000
= 1134.000 Kg/m3

g Mass of Fine aggregate = e x volume of fine aggregate x Specific Gravity of FA

= 0.715 x 0.38 x 2.73x 1000
= 736.400 Kg/m3
