BERTHING OPERATION, IN OUR SHIP WE USED TO CALL THAT BEACHING OR BEACHING

OPERATION. USUALLY IN OUR SHIP DURING BERTHING OR UNBERTHING OPERATION, ALL DECK
PERSONNELS MUST BE ON DUTY TO THEIR ASSIGNED POSITION. I, AS A DECK CADET I AM ASSIGNED ON
THE STARBOARD FORCASTLE DECK TO HANDLE MOORING LINE ON THE BOLLARD NUMBER 1 OR "UNO".
WHEN OUR VESSEL IS ON POSITION TO THE BEACHING AREA THE 3RD OFFICER OR SOMETIMES THE A/B
USED TO REPORT THE ESTIMATED DISTANCE FROM THE FORWARD RAMP TO THE BEACHING AREA
.WHEN THE DISTANCE IS ABOUT 20 METERS I READY MY SELF TO THROW THE HEAVING LINE AND WHEN
READY OR ESTIMATEDLY REACHABLE, BOTH STARBOARD AND PORT HEAVING LINES SHOULD BE
THROWN TO SECURE THE THE SHIP USING THE MOORING LINES. WHEN MOORING LINES ARE LASSOED OR
SECURED ON THE BOLLARD OF THE BERTHING AREA, WE USED TO PULL IT TO SECURE THE SHIP. OUR SHIP
WAS NOT FITTED WITH A MOORING WINCH, ONLY HAS A RAMP WINCH THAT IS WHY WE NEED TO PULL THE
MOORING LINES MANUALLY. UPON BERTHING OPERATION ESPECIALLY IN CEBU WE USUALLY HAVE AN
ASSISTING TUG GIVEN BY THE CHARTERER FOR A QUICK AND SAFE BERTHING/ UNBERTHING OPERATION.
WHEN THE RAMP IS ALREADY AVAILABLE FOR BEACHING , THE OFFICER COMMANDED TO LOWER IT UNTIL IT
TOUCHES THE GROUND, THEN THE MOORING LINES SHOULD BE FASTENED QUICKLY TO THE BOLLARD
NUMBER 1. TO SECURE THE SHIP MORE, ANOTHER MOORING LINES MUST BE FASTENED TO THE BOLLARD
NUMBER 2 AND WHEN ALREADY DONE THE 3RD OFFICER MUST REPORT TO THE MASTER TO DROP THE
ANCHOR AND TURN THE ENGINE OFF. BERTHING SECURED!
