I. Introduction
In the year 2018, Bündnis Entwicklung Hilft and Ruhr University Bochum –
Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV) published a World
Risk Report that shows which countries are most vulnerable and least vulnerable to
having disaster risk. Philippines came third in the report having 25.14 percent of risk.
Countries are now encouraged to have hazard identification, assessment and mapping.
Before we continue, what is a hazard, disaster, and disaster risk and how important it is
to have Hazard Identification, Assessment and Mapping?
Hazard is a dangerous phenomenon, substance, human activity or condition that
may cause loss of life, injury or other health impacts, property damage, loss of
livelihoods and services, social and economic disruption, or environmental damage.
Hazards arise from a variety of geological, meteorological, hydrological, oceanic,
biological, and technological sources, sometimes acting in combination. Disaster on the
other hand is a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society at any
scale due to hazardous events interacting with conditions of exposure, and capacity,
leading to one or more of the following: human, material, economic and environmental
losses and impacts. According to the terminology of UNDRR, disaster risk is defined as
“the potential loss of life, injury, or destroyed or damaged assets which could occur to a
system, society or a community in a specific period of time, determined probabilistically
as a function of hazard, exposure, and capacity”. In the technical sense, it is defined
through the combination of three terms: hazard, exposure and vulnerability.
Hazard Identification, Assessment, and Mapping is needed to have emergency
planning and it is important because it can reduce the disaster risk from a certain
community or in other places because people will have an idea on what routes to take
and what are they going to do when there is a hazard. It can also give people idea on
how to solve problems and reduce the number of hazards that can be fixed inside a
facility. Knowing this, We a hazard identification and mapping inside our school. We
observed every room in the ground floor and looked for possible hazard.

- What are the common hazards found?

- What is the most significant hazard in terms of severity? How did the
electrical hazards become dangerous?
- What is the overall assessment of the floor assigned to you?

IV. Individual Reflection and Insights

Ma. Angelique Abardo
Ever since we had our very first discussion in Disaster Readiness and
Risk Reduction, I could tell that this subject would definitely be useful not only for
the future but also for the present time because it teaches us to take necessary
measures to avoid hazards. Since then, my hunger for knowledge about this field
increased and it urged me to discover and learn more about this subject. When
this project was revealed to us, i got really excited to do it because it was a
perfect way to apply all the learnings Sir Ernelle has taught us over the past few
weeks before having pur Christmas break. I find this project really interesting
because we get to really examine every part of our assigned floor to ensure that
we would come up with accurate results. I personally took my part seriously
because i know that the data that i gathered would have critical and utmost
importance in knowing the hazards present in the locations assigned to us. This
will also serve as a guide not only for my fellow students but for the school as a
whole because this gives an overview/summary of all the information regarding
Risks and Hazards within the given school premises. The information collected
will help everyone be cautious and will remind them the proper measures to
avoid having serious danger from happening. Overall, this project promotes
responsibility and awareness to each and every one and I absolutely learned a
lot from this.

Paula Aviquivil
Starting the semester I was excited and willing to learn about Disaster
Readiness and Risk Reduction as I always wanted to know how to increase my
survival rate when a disaster hits. I have learned a lot in the past week in
determining hazards and doing this project to determine hazards in my school
allowed me to apply my knowledge in the real world. I found this activity very
helpful as I believe that it also necessary to know how the lessons would apply in
a real situation to better develop my understanding on the subject. In doing the
activity I have learned how dangerous the ground floor is a floor I thought at first
was the safest. I have realized that the ground floor was not that safe as I first
thought it was as this floor encompasses laboratories containing flammable
chemicals and the pantry room full of explosives namely gas. Realizing this I
have learned how important this activity is for myself and others as I believe that
the data I’ve gathered together with my group would help the others and the
school to make better preparation and measures regarding possible risk and
disaster that may come. This project not only made way to apply my knowledge
realistically, but it also gave way for me to become more aware of my
surroundings and knowledgeable about readiness. Overall I found this activity
enjoyable and eventful and I recommend it to be done yearly for others to
experience it as well and learn not only inside the classroom.

This project in DRRR had made me realize that I have been ignorant of
the hazards around me. There were also several things I did not know were
considered as potential occupational hazards. Examining a floor in school has
shed light to the fact that even little things can accumulate to become a
dangerous situation and has given me the knowledge to be aware of my
surroundings. The end result of this project will surely be beneficial to students
and faculty in Makati Science High School and help them acknowledge the risks
of hazards and create actions that would help lessen or remove the effects of
these.

DRRR is one of the many subjects that I have anticipated in studying for
the 2nd sem. The reason is because I know that the subject will be very helpful to
me and the people around me because this subject teaches us how to deal with
hazards and teaches us necessary measures on how to avoid it. For this grading
period, the DRRR has collaborated with Physics for the performance task and we
were assigned to make a hazard map of the floor that our group were assigned
to. While going through each room in the ground floor, me and my members
observed that a lot of hazard can be seen in each room. This project gave us
awareness in the hazards that are present in the environment that we spend
most of our time, our school. I can say that this project was really helpful to us in
many ways. It gave us the opportunity to observe each room in the ground floor
and see all the hazards present in it. It also gave me yhe opportunity to work
together with my classmates in a project.

Jesper Chris Tiongson

The activity was very helpful in making us look closer to possible hazards
that may occur in a certain room/floor and think of a possible way to avoid that
specific hazard.
