Universal Design for Learning (UDL): If there is a student in class who has an auditory or visual impairment,
they can still participate in this activity. If they have an auditory impairment, closed captioning or subtitles
are made available so that they can watch and read along with what the video is portraying. If the student
has an ASL signer accompanying them in class, the signer can help the student with understanding what the
video is saying or what is being said in the group discussion. If they have a visual impairment, the student will
be able to listen to what the video is saying and will be able to actively engage in the discussions revolving
around the general theme of the topic.
Lesson idea implementation: This activity would ideally be introduced towards the beginning of a mental
and emotional health unit. For this activity, students will get into groups of 3-4 for this activity. Each group
will have access to an iPad or a laptop so that they can access the video on Edpuzzle. This video, which is

around 3 minutes in length, has a few open-ended questions embedded throughout; so, as a group, they will
watch the video, take note of the questions, then collaborate and put together answers (as the instructor,
you will have access to what the students typed and entered into the question-prompts on the video in an
effort to assess their learning). After each group has had ample time to watch the video and think of
responses to the questions, the class will engage in a group discussion about what they learned.

At the conclusion of the group discussion, the instructor will re-emphasize what has been said about what
mental and emotional health consists of, state clearly what it isn’t, and encourage the students to be open
and receptive to the following lessons concerning mental and emotional health. Feedback will be provided
via a rubric that assesses the groups’ performance (i.e. did they actually watch and listen to what the video
said or did they just make up some stuff?).
Reflective Practice: Since this activity is more of an introductory lesson than anything, many different
extensions are possible. Everyone wants to talk about the various disorders when they first hear about
mental and emotional health. While that is an important component of the content area as a whole, there
are many different areas that could positively impact students rather than having them focusing on the
negative stuff right away. As the instructor using the Edpuzzle, you could create your own open-ended or
multiple-choice questions and have them embedded in the video if you wanted students to focus on
something else.
