A review on Wireless sensor Network on smart grids

Abstract

In this paper, we have discussed the use of wireless sensor network in smart grid.

Introduction

Wireless networks have wide variety of applications in the society. The applications of
WSN are in various fields such as environmental monitoring, farming, smart house
implementation, health and safety assistance, smart grid and etc. For example, in the farming,
WSN can be used in monitoring crops, soil moisture, nutrient content and environmental
management, security and safety.

Power is the very big problem in our country, especially in Tamilnadu. Grid is electric
grid with a network of transmission lines, substations, and transformers and delivers power to
homes and business industries. Smart grid is a digital technology which allows two-way
communication between utility and customer and sensing along the transmission lines. Smart
grid is nothing but providing the power need of the society with some artificial intelligence. It
encompasses controls, computer, automation and new technologies and equipments working
together.

In the Transmission distribution side, it may have the line faults during power delivery.
Location fault can be monitored by WSN. Further, power fraud and theft can be prevented. At
the consumer side, Wireless Automatic Meter Reading (WAMR) reduces the man power, low
cost, easy solution (gather energy consumption data). In the generation side, WSN can be used to
control and monitor energy generation facilities such as monitoring energy wastage, excessive
usage of energy. Wireless sensor nodes can determine the temperature, voltage, current and
power quality.

The aim is to create a test bed for Wireless sensor network on smartgrid within a campus.
TinyOS is an open source operating system for embedded sensor networks. TOSSIM is a
simulator tool for Wireless sensor network with Nesc programming in TinyOS. The simulation
tools can be used for simulation of the testbed. And it is necessary to focus on the increasing the
lifetimes of the sensor nodes connected without cables (motes).

Because of the development of smart grid, we can avoid various problems occur during
the power transmission and delivery. Power maintenance is a serious issue so it has got the very
much importance. For the societal development, it is very much necessary to do research in this
area. Smart grid is evolving, piece by piece because it consists of millions of pieces and parts. In
the next decade, it will be perfected like how we use Internet today.
