Introduction

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step”.

– Lao Tzu

This is what a great philosopher once said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins

with one step.” Taking College degree is a one big step for students. In here, we get to

learn to be Independent and be responsible, college reminded us that we are not kids

anymore and we are big enough to mold our future, so basically it is in our hands now, we

just need to precious it. for the last bit of our big step we get to experienced the Internship

or the On-the-job Training that will open the opportunity for us students to be a successful

person.

OJT or On-The-Job Training is the last part of college years, it is the one that give the

students a chance to experience the real world, whereas students will apply the theories,

lessons, etc. on their internship. For a student, it is a shocking experience, maybe because

there are no professors who will teach students, instead there’s a coordinator who will help

to survive the internship, there are no exam to measure their learnings, the student who

are partaking internship cannot absent, unless they want to stay there a little bit longer.

Besides from those shocking experience, it is also help the students to attain skills and

information by undergoing the actual work setting. OJT experience is a party size of Trial

and Error, because students will know if they really want this job or is this the right job for

them. In here they will know if this kind of job really appeal to them. And that is one of the

best part of having an Internship.

Being part of an Internship or OJT can open a lot of doors to us students, if you do

great the company will absorb you or they can will refer you in their sister company

1
because they know that you are good. Or internship can sharpen and improve your

professional skills related to your career field on the job. As an intern you will gain

experience pragmatically and learn on how to do your job well.

Internship or On-The-Job Training is the part of BS Psychology curriculum where

you have to finish the 560 hours on three Major fields, which are the Clinical (200 hours),

School (180 hours), and Industrial Setting (180 hours) in a matter of time. In here the

student in Psychology program is free to choose where they will start their Internship,

except Clinical setting. This Internship will help the student to be ready in the real world,

learn to be more practical, to show their strategy in the real situation, and to shape or mold

the student professionally.

IV. Narrative Report of Practicum Experience

A. Cavite Center for Mental Health

HISTORY

The Cavite Center for Mental Health is a 500-bed capacity hospital situated at Trece

Martires City, Cavite. It was established as an independent entity under resolution no. 225-

S-2000 by the SANGGUNIANG PANLALAWIGAN OF CAVITE upon the approval of the

Provincial Governor on May 8, 2000.

CCMH has a very complex history. It was originally established sometime in

January 1967 as an extension of the National Center for Mental Health with only a few

personnel and staff on rotation and one ward adjacent to the ABMH. At the time of its

operation, there were 75 patients. Because of the continued admittance of mentally ill

patients, an additional ward and administration building were constructed.

On January 23, 1979 pursuant to Ministry Order No. Series of 1978, this extension

of service became the psychiatric unit of ABMH wherein Dra. Evangeline C. Delos Reyes,

then integrated Regional Consultant of out-patient at the Batangas City Regional Hospital,

was further designated to assist in the care of patients but under the administrative

supervision of the Regional Health Office No. IV.

With the increasing number of mentally ill patients, coming from Region IV, its

organizational set-up and personnel and staff was revised to achieve a maximized goal.

The Regional Mental Hospital becomes a special institution tasked with the care of

mentally ill patients, with eleven provinces and eight cities in the Region IV. The

enlargement of this hospital was projected, and its jurisdictional coverage was considered.

5
Eventually on June 16, 1980, PD 1541 provided for the creation of a Regional

Mental Health Center in the twelve regions of the country. This Psychiatric Unit was

elevated and become Region IV Mental Hospital. It has initial fund of Php 2,750,000.00

and with Evangeline Delos Reyes finally became the chief of the Hospital.

VISION

The CAVITE CENTER FOR MENTAL HEALTH will evolve to be the highest

quality and most comprehensive mental health system, providing empathy, dedication to

service, care and sensitivity to the needs of the people of Cavite. It shall carry its tasks

with equality regardless of social status and beliefs.

MISSION

1. First and foremost is to provide excellent mental health service to all patients

presented in the center

2. To strengthen the Center’s Mental Health Care System for it to be a model,

province wide or region wide

Cavite

6
8. To be a training hospital within 2 years

WORK EXPERIENCE

When our professor notified us that my first On-The-Job Training is Clinical Setting,

I am thrilled, to think that I just read their disorder from the books, and other stuffs, but also

I will handle people who has them, I know it is sad to see people with disorder, but being

a psychology student I feel ecstatic thinking that I will meet them.

For our 200 hours OJT in CCMH, we have to handle two clients, the more hours

you have the many patients you will handle, that is why we have to handle two of them. At

first, it is really challenging because two clients are equal to x2 budget and also two case

study, which is kind of hard for a first timer.

On my First day, January 29, 2018. I had these mixed emotions, like I’m scared and

excited at the same time, it feels like I will ride the tallest Roller Coaster, knowing that it is

the real deal. After they inform us how to use the test such as BETA III, SCCT, HTP etc.

They call us to get our first client, at first all my excitement is gone, and it is replaced with

frightens and sadness, because I know those clients has a troubling and scary past, that

they can’t handle it, and resulted to have a mental disorder. Seeing my first client is really

scares me like for example, the way he looks at me, and smile, and sometimes he is

mouthing some bad words, and when I ask what he says, he always says “wala” means

nothing, then he’s face will become irritated. on the next day in the afternoon, my patient

becomes agitated then he looks at me violently and saying bad words towards others. And

when I ask him if he’s okay, I received nothing from him, not even a nod nor a blink.

Minutes have passed and suddenly he approached me and said that he doesn’t feel good,

he doesn’t want to join us anymore, and want to go back to ward. Then he stands up

7
without hearing my orders, then go to the Rehabilitation ward, and saying bad words again.

We tell it to our Coordinator, and he told me that he will changed my patient. We went to

the Female Ward and get my second client, which is kind of calm and smiles a lot. Seeing

my new patient relieved me because she is so calm and sweet, but sometimes she forgot

my name, still it’s fine. After a lot of days passed, my new patient became a demanding

person asking me this and that kind of food, and not answering me nicely without giving

her food. And my last patient is just really cool because I know what I will do now, now that

I learn my mistakes from my past clients. And also, he is really literally chill, and he says

to me that they will release him later on because of his fast recovery.

I experience encounters with a client is hard and also fun. I enjoy talking to them

and knowing their past, and the stories behind their illnesses. And treating them with all

my respect because of their challenges in their life. For me, I recommend that their family

support the patient more, knowing their past and other problems, it is one of the best

medicine for them.

As my Clinical Setting end, I learned a lot. I’m not that nervous near people with

mental disorder, and I don’t know if it’s just me, or what, because I feel like I know now if

the person has a mental disorder by looking at it, but also, I really need to assess it more,

because it’s just an assumption of mine.

PROBLEM ENCOUNTERED

The first problem that I encountered is the travel to CCMH, Dasmariñas to Trece is

really far, especially with the traffics because of road widening near Emilio Aguinaldo

College to Walter Dasma, and I have to wait a Jeepney going to Trece, you have to wait

patiently because some jeep is overcrowded of commuters. The next problem is the call

8
time, because if you are 1 minute late, another day staying there. Third is the place, there

are a lot of gigantic mosquitos there, I feel like, if that mosquito bites me, I will have a

dengue. And last the coordinators, they are really mean to students, when you greet them,

they will not care, as if you are talking to the air. And they really are good at degrading a

person and demand a lot.

ACTION TAKEN

To solve my problem, at first, I have to wake up early, so I won’t be late, but the

traffic is really bad, so I resolve it again, by sleeping in my sister’s house at the subdivision

in General Trias, Cavite, so that I will not encounter those traffics. Next is me and my

classmates, use mosquito repellant lotion so that those gigantic mosquitos won’t bite us.

And lastly, since we can’t solve people’s attitude, we just don’t care about it, and we still

greet them even if they don’t greet us back. And we just don’t care about them, and just

accept their demands.

INSIGHTS GAINED

“It all depends on how we look at things, and not how they are in themselves..”

- Carl Jung

Having my clinical setting internship experience make me realize and learn a lot of

things. Like, you need to support the people around you, and also, if you have a problem,

ask your family, friends and others who are close to you, because you know that you can’t

do this alone. Next is don’t judge people just because they have a mental illness, since

they do not choose to have one, nor planned to have it, sometimes people who have it has

traumatic past. Seeing the patients in the Mental Facility really saddens me, because

behind those smiles, there’s always a bad/sad/horrifying memory in them. And talking to

9
them about how their family does not visit them, is miserable, that is why sometimes some

patients are escaping. Sometimes I pity them because they always take the same

personality and intelligence test for the rest of their life residing in the Mental Facility,

whenever I ask them if they got bored or tired taking the test, they always says that it’s

okay, because that was the only time that people really focused on them, and talking to

them eagerly, they said that it is making them feel at ease and feel like their illness become

lessened. Seeing those patients crumpling in one room, makes me wonder if the people

are aware of this. I really hope people should be aware of their illness, the government

should make their medicine a little cheaper so that people who are less unfortunate with

this illness can afford this. They should make the facility also bigger so that a lot of people

who have the same illness as the one in mental facility should be accommodated,

especially the one who has no home and wandering outside. If only they know these

things, if only people in the Philippines are aware of this illness, if only they also care about

people who have them, maybe things especially with people who have mental disorder

will get better.

B. Jabez Christian School

HISTORY

As early as 1996, the Christian Growth Ministries recognized the need for a school

around Jabez Christian Center in Dasmariñas. This same year, the need was realized

when Munting Ilaw Learning Center (MILC) founded by Sabine Bock was formally turned

over to CGM was establish under it’s new name Shining Light Kiddie Center (SLKC). It

10
offered pre-elementary courses to children from surrounding communities and the

preschool children of the Home of Joy Orphanage. With remarkable response from the

community, SLKC grew and became Jabez Christian School (JCS) in 1997. Then the

school was duly registered in 2006.

The heart of JCS mission is to promote holistic child development and equip

children and youth to become lifelong active learners, to deal with life, be of service to

God, and to become responsible and productive members of their family and society.

VISION

By the grace of God JCS will be a leading Christian school assisting parents in

nurturing, developing and equipping children and youth to be of service to God, family and

society and transforming lives for God’s glory.

MISSION

JCS commits itself in promoting holistic child development and equipping children

and youth to become lifelong active learners, to deal with life, be of service to God and

become responsible member of their family and society.

WORK EXPERIENCE

For my second internship experience, I choose the School Setting. It was hard

finding school for our School setting, because some school are not accepting interns for

the reason that the school year will finish on April and some are in March. We went to

different institutions asking if there are any slots for interns in Guidance, some say they

11
do, but it has limited slots only. And then our professor, Mr. Dela Cruz, recommends us in

Jabez Christian School, and lucky for us, they really need a lot of interns.

First day in Jabez, our coordinator introduces us on some teachers and other

employees there, so that we will get familiarized with the place. On my first day, I get to

experienced managing grade 2 students, because their teacher is a little late, and the first

rule on the JCS is “do not leave the students without a teacher” since I’m okay with kids,

I’m fine handling them, I am not that scared since I have nephews and niece, and they are

freaking adorable, so I enjoyed taking care of them for 2 hours. And whenever I get to see

those grade 2 students they always greet me with a smile to their face, it’s so cute.

On my 1st week on JCS, one thing that crossed in my mind, students really scared

of the Guidance Office, why? Because their guidance counselor and their disciplinarian

are just the same person. The counselor says to us interns that, we need to be strict,

otherwise these students will manipulate us, I just nodded, and the other interns. Deep

inside, I know that it is simply wrong to be strict as a guidance counselor, as a guidance

counselor, you need to protect the well-being of the students studying in this school. No

students will come to the guidance counselor and tell their problems if they are strict.

Nevertheless, the sanctions that the counselor gives to them were fine to me. Students,

especially the kids who are born with a silver spoon in their mouth should learn that no

one will clean their own mess. And also, I also observe that they really hate tardiness, and

not tolerate them, based on what I saw, three or five lates is equal to community service

which is really good I guess, then I think to myself, that if I study here I spend my school

years cleaning the whole campus.

12
Other from disciplinary actions, this school taught me to how to deal and handle

children without punishing them. That teaching is, shout when talking in the classroom,

and try to be an authoritative person, because if I don’t do that, the student will just keep

doing their things, they will play, shout, run, and going outside all the time. So, you must

shout at them. At first, I was a little hesitant, because they are so darn cute, I don’t want

them to cry because of me. But then again, I must do it, or else they will manipulate me.

Days have passed, and I adjusted to this school, progressively, our coordinator let

us do an exit interview for the High School student who will pursue Senior High. We based

our question on the sheet that they were answering before the interview, and their interest

test or their career test. Some are lower on the courses that they want to take, and we

need to tell them that they should change their career path without hurting their feelings.

These internship in School teaching, not just teach me to be a good photocopier or

do some checking of test papers or other clerical works, but to be a good counselor, and

a teacher to a student. It also teaches me on how to get along with students, and how to

handle them, without hurting or scaring or making them cry. Then there is also a professor

there who baptized us to be a Born Again which is weird for me, I know for myself that I’m

still a catholic and I’m still going to a Catholic Church. It is actually hard for me to take it

seriously, specifically I’m not a “maka-Diyos” person. Though, a lot of things happen to me

in my second Internship it is still an awesome experience for me and the other interns in

JCS, despite on waking up early and walking really far to go to my internship.

13
PROBLEM ENCOUNTERED

My first problem that I encounter in my Guidance setting is the travel, even if it is

near to my house, the travel fee is a little expensive because we had to ride a tricycle to

get there early and also the call time in Jabez is 7AM which is really early for me. Second

is the food is a little pricey for me, because if you are not a student there, there are

additional fees, so I have to pay for that just to eat food. And the food is not enough for all

the students and teachers there, sometimes when we get there, there are no foods to eat,

just eggs and hotdog, the one that they cook earlier. Third, sometimes teachers become

fed up of things and they can be a little lazier at those times, so they pass their works on

the OJTs like checking the test paper.

ACTION TAKEN

To resolve the problems that I encountered. First, we discuss with my co OJTs on

sharing the fee when riding tricycle so that they will not be late, we set our own call time

so that we will not wait on others because they are aware of the time that we set. Second,

I woke up early so that I can pack my own lunch to avoid spending money and not having

a problem on there will be no food left to us ever again. Third, we just accept those clerical

works that the teacher is giving to us, because it is part of my internship, and when you

are in the real world, there are a lot and much worse clerical works. So, I just accept it and

get used to it.

INSIGHT GAINED

I really learned a lot of things while taking my 2nd Internship in JCS. First, always

smile, especially when you are a counselor, you don’t want your client to fear you.

14
Because, the first thing in this kind of field is building rapport with your client. Next, doing

clerical works is fine, even if it is not related to the program that you are taking, because if

you are in the real world you know there is a lot and much difficult things you will do, not

just checking test papers or teaching students, there is much worse. Those clerical works,

preparing us to the other side of our job description. Second, I learned that handling kids

a lot of kids is really hard, so I respect all those teachers handling those little kids. Lastly,

students are really scared of Guidance office, and to avoid these you also have to respect

them so that they will also respect you, as I stated earlier, always smile. I enjoyed it, it was

a lot of fun. But I think, it is not the right path for me. Because I’m not good at comforting

person or other things related in Guidance, in fact, I don’t care other people problems,

because for me, if you create this problem you know how to solve it, just like programming,

if you make it, you know how to delete or uninstall it. But still I’m willing to listen to their

problems but it’s just not my forte or preference.

WORKING EXPERIENCE

For my last Internship, which is the Industrial Setting. My emotion is terrified and

excited at the same time, maybe because I don’t have any classmate I’m scared that I

don’t have anyone to talk to, and excited because I will experience to be an HR associate

for the next 180 hours of my life.

For my first day my coordinator asks me to encode the gas that the employees

spent, and preparing, monitoring the timekeeping for the next cut off in April, and lastly

preparing the check operation for the Gas bill. At first, I was shocked that there is a lot of

encoding happening in this field, and all the employees that I saw in Nissan are pretty

busy. I experienced a lot of mistakes in my first day like, I encode the wrong time-in for the

specific employees. My coordinator addressed me that I should always double check it,

specially in timekeeping, because the HR is basing their salary on timekeeping, so if I put

it wrong, the employee will question his salary and may be become angry at the HR in the

company, and also I ride on their company car, because my coordinator want me to be

familiarized how this company works, we went to find some cheaper photocopy machine.

I spent my first three days doing the timekeeping for April 9-23, and preparing some OJT’s

clearance certificate to them, at first it was kind of boring to me, because I have no one to

talk to. But then I get used to it. Everyone treating me nicely so I’m fine with.

17
Days have passed, and I get used to the office life. Sometimes my Coordinator lets

me check the papers of the applicants and teaching me what question to ask in an

interview. One time, I experienced telling an applicant that waiting for more than two hours

that there is no slot available for him in the company, judging by his face, I know he already

hates me, and I think he is really sad and angry at the same time. I felt sorry for him, I don’t

know what to say. Besides from that, it was fun and refreshing doing that kind of stuff.

PROBLEM ENCOUNTERED

The problem that I encountered in my Internship on Industrial Setting first is the

travel, due to the traffic near EAC to Walter Dasma, and the road widening in San Agustin.

And lastly, I don’t know any people on my internship, I try to approach them, but I’m a

passive person, I don’t talk too much, I only talk when someone approaches me and that

is a real problem to me.

ACTION TAKEN

To solve my problem, I wake up early to avoid the traffics and also to avoid the heat

that summer gives. Next is I try to approach people as many as I should, and to be friendly

as possible. And luckily to me, I gained a friend.

INSIGHT GAINED

“You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you

really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I lived through this

horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.”

- Eleanor Roosevelt

18
Besides from learning how the HR works and how you should double check things.

What this internship taught me the most is not being a passive person, despite my shyness

and rigidity, I overcome my passive issue. I’m this kind of person who really feared talking

to other people, especially those people who I don’t know. I really can’t say things that

come to my mind. When I speak, it is full of fragmented sentence. I really have this low

self-confidence and self-esteem, I feel that if I approach them it will end up badly, or they

will say something behind my back, so I keep my mouth shut and pretend I don’t see them.

And after that, they will misinterpret me as a mean and unapproachable person, but I’m

okay with it, then deep inside I really want to be friendly to everyone. And when I get to my

last Internship, I learned to be an independent person, before I always depend to my

friends, especially when ordering foods at a fast food, or when talking to people that I don’t

know. It was a success, I overpass it.

19
V. Recommendation

“When you decide not to be afraid, you can find friends in super unexpected

places.”

- Ms. Marvel

I relate this quote by a fiction character Ms. Marvel to myself. Having my Internship

in three different field makes me overcome my shyness, fear, quietness and everything

not so nice about me. I feel that I’m much more independent than before, like hey? I can

order my own food at a fast food restaurant when I want to, that is a big achievement for

me. Sometimes, I can approach people and talk to some people that I’m not close with. I

even met new friends in all different fields of my Internship. Having my Internship is a no

Joke, I really feel like I’m really working, it’s not like I am a student anymore. It was a

shocking experience for me like I can’t be late or else I have to stay in my internship a little

longer, or there is no exam to measure my intelligence, in fact you really need to be a

strategic person, you must have your own tactics to survived especially in Clinical and

Industrial Setting.

As a bonafide student of Emilio Aguinaldo College-Cavite, taking BS Psychology

who partake an internship in three different fields, I have a lot of recommendation to those

students that will get their own internship anytime soon. First, you have to start your OJT

as early as possible, especially as a Psychology or Education student who has an

Internship in a month of March or April, you really need to start your School setting a little

earlier or else, it will be hard for you to find another school that will accepts OJT applicant

because it was the end of the school year for elementary or high schools.

20
Second. Choose carefully. You don’t want to spend you Internship just being a

photocopier or a chaperone of someone right? And of course, you want an internship that

has an allowance. So, I recommended that you must choose wisely and take time to think

if that’s what you want. Don’t just pick that company just because you have no choice. I

know to myself, that there are a lot of company that really need a trainee.

Third. Don’t be limited, be unlimited. As I stated earlier, don’t pick a company that

has no impact to you, or you pick it because you have no choice. If it’s too far for you, and

you really want that company, then adjust, distance is not an excuse, so make up for it.

But me, I really can’t since my mother does not allowed me to work too far, and she says

that it is expensive.

And last but not the least. Break out of your comfort zone and enjoy taking the risk.

The ability to take the risks by stepping outside your comfort zone is the primary way by

which we grow. I know we are afraid to come out of the shell and take the step because

you think some people might not having it. Well, comfort zone is not really about comfort

or it is not really comforting, it is about the fear on what inside of you, the fear that are

holding you back to do better and do amazing things. Once you come out of the so called

“comfort zone” you will enjoy taking risks, and when you overcome it, it really feels good

emotionally.

Next is for the students who have the same program as mine, the one who will take

the Three setting (Clinical, School, and Industrial setting). First, the Clinical setting. The

clinical setting is the one that most of the Psychology student are excited about, This

setting is the one that will showcase your learnings, like the courses that you were taking,

in here you can show your knowledge in both Abnormal Psychology and Psychological

21
Assessment, you will learn how to write properly your own Mental Status Examination,

doing some personality and IQ test in different people, not just your classmate or your

colleagues. In Clinical setting, you can see the real deal. So, I recommended that your

OJT for Clinical Setting should be in a Mental Health Institution so that you really can use

what you learn in Abnormal Psych and Psych Testing.

Next is for your Guidance Setting. For me, I recommend that you choose a School

that has a good Guidance and Counseling offer for a student, don’t just choose a school

that has a Guidance office but not giving importance for the well-being of the students. So,

choose wisely.

Last is the Industrial Setting. Where you can start working in the office, encoding a

lot of things, the employee’s attendance, their progress, etc. Choose a company that are

big, or maybe if you’re lucky, the one that has allowance. Choose an Industrial setting that

can shape your knowledge in Skills in IO Psychology, Because, we both know that some

of us will end up in Industrial Psychology.

As what the movie “Forest Gump” says:

“Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.”
