THE BREMEN TOWN MUSICIANS

By Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm

A certain man had a donkey that had carried the corn sacks to the mill untiringly for many years. But strength was going
and he was growing more and more unfit for work. Then his master began to think that the donkey’s not worth his day. But the
donkey; seeing, the harm might come to him, ran away and started out the road to Bremen.’ Then he thought,” I can surely be a
town musician”.
When he had walked some distance, he found a hound lying on the road, panting like one who had run till he was tired.”
What are you panting for, you big fellow?” asked the donkey.
“Ah”, replied the hound, as I am old and growing weaker every day and can hunt no more, my master wanted to kill me.
So I ran away. How am I to earn a living now?
“ I tell you what”, said the donkey,” I am going to Bremen and shall be a town musician there. Go with me and become a
musician.
STOP Do you think the hound would join the donkey?
The hound agreed and on they went.
Before long, they came upon a cat sitting on the path, with a face as sad as three rainy days!” Now then, old one, what
has gone wrong with you?” asked the donkey.
“Who can be merry when his life is in danger?’ answered the cat. “I am now getting old. My teeth are worn to stumps. I
prefer to sit by the fire and sleep, rather than hunt mice. So my mistress wanted to drown me: that’s why I ran away. But now,
what am I to do? Where am I to go?”
“Go with us to Bremen. You understand night music, so you can be a town musician.”

STOP Do you think the cat with them?

The cat thought it was a good idea and went with them. After this, the three of them came to a farm yard where the cock
was sitting upon the gate, crowing with all his might. “Your crowing chills my bone,” said the donkey.” What’s the matter?”

“I have been predicting fine weather because it is day in which the housewife washes her child’s little shirts and has told
the cook that she intends to eat me in the soup tomorrow. And this evening, I am to have my head cutoff. Now, I am crowing
loudly while I can.”

“Oh, cock,” said the donkey, “you had better come away with us. We are going to Bremen. You can find something
better than death there. You have a good voice, and if make music together, it must have some quality!”

STOP Do you think the cock joined them?

“They agreed to this plan and all four went on together. But then, in the evening, they came to a forest where they
decided to spend the night. The donkey and the hound lay under a large tree, while the cock and the cat settled themselves on the
branches. But the cock flew right to the top where he would be safest of all. Before he went to sleep, he looked all around and
thought he saw in distance a little spark of light burning. He called out to his companions that there must be a house not far off for
he saw a light. The donkey said, “If so, we had better get up and go on for the shelter here is bad.” The hound thought that few
bones with some meat on them would do him good too.”

So they made their way to the place where the light was and soon saw it shone brighter and grew larger. They came to
a well-lighted robbers’ house. The donkey, as he was the biggest, went to the window and looked in.

STOP What did the donkey see?

“What do you see, my donkey?” asked the cock.

“What do I see?” answered the donkey “I see a table covered with good things to eat and drink, and robbers sitting at it
enjoying them.”
“That would be the sort of things for us,” said the cock.
“Yes, yes. Ah, how I wish we were there!” said the donkey.
STOP Do you think that wish would come true?
Then, the animals talked together of how they should drive the robbers, at last they thought of a plan. The donkey was to
place himself with his forefeet upon the window ledge, the hound was to jump on the donkeys back, the cat was to climb upon the
dog, and lastly the cock was to fly up and perch upon the head of the cat.
When this was done, at a certain signal, they began to perform their music together. The donkey brayed. The hound
barked. The cat meowed. The cock crowed. Then, they burst through the window of the room so that the glass shattered! At this
horrible noise, the robbers sprang up, thinking that a ghost had come in, and fled in fear out into the forest. The four companions
now sat as if they would not eat for a month.
As soon as the musicians had finished, they put out the light and each looked for a suitable sleeping place for himself.
The donkey lay down upon some straw in the yard, the hound behind the door, the cat upon the hearth near the warm ashes, and
the cock perched himself upon a beam of the roof. And, being tired with their long walk, they soon went to sleep.
STOP What do you think happened to the robbers?

When it was past midnight, and the robbers saw from afar that the light was no longer in their house and that all
appeared to be quiet, the leader said.’ We shouldn’t let ourselves be frightened so.” He ordered one of them to go and inspect the
house.

The messenger, finding that all was still, went into the kitchen to light a candle and, taking the shining fiery eyes of the
cat for live coals, he held a match to them to light it but the cat did not understand the action and flew in his face, spitting and
scratching. The robber was so frightened that he ran through the backdoor. But the dog, who lay there, sprang up and bit his leg,
as he ran across its hind foot. The donkey, which was on the yard, kicked the man with his hind legs. The cock, too, who had been
awakened by the noise and became excited, cried down from the beam, “Cock –a-doodle-doo!!!”.

STOP What do you think did the messenger do?

Then, the robber ran back as fast as he could to his leader and said.” Ah, there is a horrible witch sitting in the house, who
spat on me and scratched my face with her long claws, and by the door stands a man with a knife who stabbed me in the leg. In
the yard, there lies a black monster that beat me with a wooden clop and above, upon the roof, sits the judge who called out.”
Bring the villain here to me!” so I got away as fast as I could.

STOP What do you think happens next?

After this, the robber did not trust themselves in the house again. The house suited the four musicians of Bremen so well
that they did not care to leave it anymore.

The driver did not do anything to help his bulls. Instead he went down on his knees. He prayed to Hercules, god of strength.
He prayed to him to help him pull his cart out of the mud.

But Hercules said, “”Put your arms on the wheel, lazy fellow. Help the bulls pull the wheels put of the mud. The gods help
those who help themselves.

The Mermaid

Rey and his father were fishermen. They lived near the sea.

One day, they went fishing. They carried their net and rode on a banca. His father threw the net into the sea. When his
father was pulling the net he could not do it. He said, “Somebody under the sea is holding the net.”

Rey told his father that he would dive into the sea. His father did not allow him but Rey insisted on diving. He reached the
bottom of the sea. He saw pearls and other precious stones on the floor of the sea. Then he saw a beautiful girl. Rey was surprised
and asked, “Who are you?”

The girl answered, “I am Rita. A witch changed me into a mermaid to guard these treasures. I am holding your net.”

”Please let the net go. My father will pull it,” said Rey.

The mermaid released the net. He told Rey not to tell anyone about her. Rey promised and returned to the surface of the
sea. His father was happy to see him back.

#4 The Sick Lion

All the animals in the forest were happy because they heard that their cruel king was sick. The lion did not come out of
his cave as he usually did. He sent out a message to his subjects that he wanted to bid them goodbye before he died.

“What does he want to see us for?’ asked the deer. “Maybe he will give each of us a share of his wealth.”

All the animals went to see their King Lion except the fox. He sat on a tree and watched the animals go inside the cave.
He waited for them to come out, but no on e did. Later that afternoon, the King Lion appeared at the entrance of the cave. When
he saw the fox, he said, “Why did you not come to see me? Don’t you want to share with the other animals what I have given
them?”

“I really want to visit you, my King,” said the fox. “But I am sure your home is crowded now. All the animals have gone
inside your cave and no one has come out yet.”

“Ha!Ha! laughed the King Lion. “They all wanted to stay inside the cave. You will be staying there for a long time, if
you will wait for them to come out.”

“Never mind, my King,” said the fox. “I am a very patient animal after all.”

He went away happily because he was still well and alive. He knew well why not a single animal came out of the cave.
“Our King Lion thinks he is wise but he cannot deceive me with his tricks. He will never catch me alive.”

The fox went away as fast as he could from the lion’s cave with the decision never to come back.

#5 The Tiny Pigeon

A pretty little pigeon built her nest high in the attic of an old barn. After some days, she had five little white eggs. How
proud Mrs. Pigeon was! She kept the eggs warm under her soft wings. After about three weeks, four fuzzy young pigeons broke
through their shells and peeped out to take a look at the world. Mother Pigeon looked anxiously at one tiny egg that was still
unhatched. Father pleaded for some more days for the egg to hatch. Three days passed and Mother Pigeon heard a weak chirp
from the egg and a tiny pigeon poked its head out of the shell.

Rapunzel
Once upon a time, there was an old woman who owned a garden of turnips that was the envy of her neighbors. No one
dared to go inside the garden because a high fence surrounded it. Aside from that, they were afraid of the old woman whom they
found out was a witch.

A childless couple lived near the witch’s garden. The wife became pregnant after a long, long wait. The wife wanted so much
to eat the turnips in the witch’s garden that her husband was forced to steal from it.

One night, the witch found out that the man was stealing some of her turnips.

“What do you think you’re doing?” she asked. “You are stealing my turnips!”

“I’m very sorry,” the man said in a trembling voice, “but my wife believed she would die if she could not eat them.”

The witch thought for a while. Then she said, “I will give you as much turnips as you want. In return, you must give me the
child your wife will bear.”

The man was so scared, he readily said yes. When he told the whole story to his wife, she too was frightened.

After a few months, a baby was born to the couple. The witch came to take the baby. The couple pleaded but the witch would
not listen to them.

The witch took the baby. She named her Rapunzel.

“From now on, I will be your mother,” she whispered to the baby.

The witch brought Rapunzel in the middle of the forest. She locked her up in a tower that had no doors and stairs, only a little
window at the top. She used to visit and bring her food in the morning.

Rapunzel grew up with wonderful long hair. It was as gold as the sun. She let her hair drop to the ground when she heard the
witch say:

“Rapunzel, Rapunzel! Let down your hair!”

One time, the king’s son went hunting. He was lost in the forest and had passed nearby the tower. The prince heard Rapunzel
singing and he immediately fell in love with her sweet voice. He searched where the voice came from and saw the tower.
The prince looked for a door leading into the tower but he could not find any. Since then, the prince returned to the forest to
listen to Rapunzel’s songs.

One morning, the witch came. The prince hid behind a tree and watched.

“Rapunzel, Rapunzel! Let down your hair!” the witch said.

That night, the prince decided to try his luck. After he said the words he heard from the witch. Rapunzel’s hair fell down. The
prince climbed up at once. Rapunzel was frightened when she saw the prince.

“Do not be afraid. I just want us to be friends,” he said in a gentle voice.

Since then, the prince would visit Rapunzel. They would talk and laugh and share stories until she silently fell in love with
him.

So when he asked, “Will you be my wife?”

Rapunzel gladly replied, “Yes, I will, my dear prince.”

The prince had not yet figured out how to take out Rapunzel from the tower when the witch learned they were seeing each
other.

The witch learned they were seeing each other.

The witch was so angry that Rapunzel felt she would eat her.

“You, ungrateful child,” she said. “You betrayed me!”

As a punishment, the witch cut Rapunzel’s hair and took her to a faraway place.

“Don’t leave me” Rapunzel pleaded, but the witch did not mind her pleas. All Rapunzel could do was cry.

That night, the prince came back. He called, “Rapunzel, Rapunzel! Let down your hair!”

The witch who really waited for him fastened Rapunzel’s hair to the window and let it fell to the ground.

The prince was surprised when he saw the witch.

“Where is Rapunzel?” he asked.

“She’s gone. You will never see her again!” the witch said and laughed devilishly.

Before the prince could ask another question, the witch pushed him. The young man fell badly and broke hie leg.

“Help me!” he said but all he got from the witch was a sarcastic smile.

The prince thought he was going to die. He could not move his broken leg. The pain was so unbearable. He fainted.

The king had been told the prince was missing. He instructed his men to look for his son.

The king’s men found the prince. They brought him back to the palace. The palace doctors treated his broken leg and soon
enough, he was back to his old self.

The king forbade the prince to get out of the palace but he ignored his father’s order. One early morning, he crept out of the
palace to look for Rapunzel.

Mounted on his horse, the prince began to search far and wide. He would only stop when he was too tired to continue. Until
one day, he came to an isolated place.

The prince heard a voice that was so familiar. It made his heart beat faster.

“Rapunzel!” he called as he rushed towards the voice.

“My dear prince,” Rapunzel exclaimed as she saw the prince.

She was crying with joy when she noticed that he was limping. The prince told him what had happened. Rapunzel hugged
him tightly and wept.

“I will bring you to my father’s kingdom,” the prince said. “And you will be my wife.

The whole kingdom rejoiced when the prince came back with Rapunzel.

The two got married and lived happily ever after.
