THE IMPLAUSIBLE QUADRILATERALS

(Team Category)

I. INTRODUCTION
Mathematics deals with the logic of shape,

quantity, patterns and their relation. It is an art of

explanation and a human activity that involves

observing, representing and investigating patterns

and qualitative relationships in physical and social

phenomena and between mathematical objects

themselves. It is all about the processes and not of

the products or answers.

In Euclidean plane Geometry, a quadrilateral is a

polygon with four edges and four vertices.

Quadrilaterals are a special type of polygon. As with

triangles and other polygons, quadrilaterals have

special properties and can be classified by

characteristics of their angles and sides. A

quadrilateral also has four angles formed by its four

sides. The sum of angle of a quadrilateral is equal to

360 degree. Another condition is the opposite angles

are also congruent. We can tell that the measures of

the opposite sides and angles are congruent if the

sides and angles measures are given. It can be prove

easily that the opposite sides and angles are

congruent if the sides and angles are given

numerically. In this particular topic we investigate

mathematically if the measures given with the length

and angles are not numerates but instead different

kinds of expressions.

II. SITUATION
How to measure the sides and angles of the

quadrilateral by applying its properties but the

given measure is of different kind of expressions

instead of numerical value? Investigate!

III. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

CONSIDERED
Generally, this investigation aimed to measure

the sides and angles of the quadrilateral by applying

its properties but the given measure is of different

kind of expressions instead of numerical value.

Specifically, the investigation sought to answer

the following questions:

1. What is the measure of the four sides of a

quadrilateral?

2. What are the co interior angles in a

quadrilateral?

3. Do the angles of a quadrilateral equal to 180?

IV. CONJECTURES FORMULATED
The investigators used the following tables and

figures to give clearer ideas about the measure of the

sides and angles of a quadrilateral.

Conjecture 1: The length of each sides measures are

given algebraically.

Conjecture 2: Another expression is given as the

sides of a quadrilateral.

In this investigation mathematically we used a radical

expression as the length of opposite sides of

quadrilaterals that are congruent.

Conjecture 3. This investigation will prove that the

measures of opposite angles are congruent in a

quadrilateral which is considered as parallel. The

properties of a quadrilateral as parallelogram states

that two pairs of opposite sides and angles are

congruent. In this conjecture will represents the

measures of opposite angles are in exponential form.

We will prove how opposite angles are congruent with

exponential expression like x2 = y2. The sum of two

opposite angle is 1800.

Justification
A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if both pairs of

opposite sides and angels are congruent and parallel.

6:3:1 ratio. One part of opposite sides are also parallel

and congruent, so the quadrilaterals must be a

parallelogram.

The four ways to prove that quadrilateral is a

parallelogram:

 Prove that both pairs of opposite sides are

parallel

 Prove that one pair of opposite sides is both

congruent and parallel

 Prove that both pairs of opposite sides are

congruent
 Prove that the diagonals bisect each other

If a quadrilaterals is a parallelogram, it has 2 sets

of opposite angles congruent. It has consecutive

angles which are supplementary. It has diagonals

which bisect each other. Justify that quadrilaterals

is a parallelogram.

Summary
This investigation aims to transform the measure

of the length of the sides and measures of the angles

of a quadrilaterals having measure in different kinds

of expressions into real values. The process of

transforming is able students to apply the knowledge

of solving expressions algebraically, radical and

exponential expressions. This process will develop

their capability of expressing expressions

congruently or equally. It develop students’ skills

mathematically.
The measures is easily converted to real values if

we solve easily the process of each conjectures

which are algebraic expressions, conjecture 2 is

radical expressions and conjecture 3 is exponential

expression. The method of solving includes the

properties of quadrilaterals classified as

parallelograms by extracting the congruency of two

pairs of opposite sides and angles.
