III. READING

Insecticides have helped farmers increase the yield and improve the quality of crops, but
there has been concern about the dangers of chemical insecticide residues in the
ecosystem and in foodstuffs. These concerns have led many governments to regulate, even
replace, some insecticides that remain toxic for long periods of time after they have been
applied.

Methyl bromide is a chemical used to eradicate unwanted pests from farmlands prior to the
seeding of crops. A highly toxic chemical, lethal to humans in large doses, when used
correctly methyl bromide can increase crop yields dramatically. For instance, strawberry
fields in California have seen an increase in average production from 5 tons per acre to
more than 20 tons per acre, an increase that can be directly linked to the widespread
application of the chemical. This potent gas also increase the yield of grapes, almonds,
tobacco, and ornamental flowers dramatically. Besides its application to soil prior to
seeding, methyl bromide is used to treat most produce exported and imported into the
United States in order to eliminate dangerous insects and molds that could spread to other
regions.

Methyl bromide has a distinct advantage over many other pesticides because it leaves no
toxic residue in the soil. However, the chemical is currently under fire from environmental
activists because it is an ozone-depleting substance. Once injected into the soil, methyl
bromide then quickly rises through the atmosphere and enters the stratosphere, where the
bromide atoms cause a chemical change in the ozone layer. The ozone layer provides
protection from ultraviolet radiation, a leading cause of skin cancer. The irony of the
situation is that methyl bromide will probably be phased out as a pesticide by the year 2012
not because it is directly toxic to humans or wildlife but because it harms the protective
ozone-layer, a crucial component a healthy planetary ecosystem.
