EAP3 Tasksheet 2: Analysing the Research Question

We are doing this to keep the research focussed & relevant and also to avoid wasting
time when finding & reading articles

My research question is: Buildings, their construction and running, are responsible for a significant
amount of energy usage, and the industry has, therefore, been seen as a major contributor, to
greenhouse gas emissions. Based on evidence from your research, to what extent can the concept
of “green buildings” help to change this situation?

1. Look at the question and your notes from the general reading. What are the two sides of
the debate? Do you have to fully agree or disagree with one of the sides?

The two sides are:

Can green buildings help to reduce the greenhouse emissions or not?

In my perception green buildings can help to reduce significantly the emissions of greenhouse
gases.

2. Write a simple definition of the main key term. Are there different types or groups?

The key term in this question is green buildings which in its design, construction, or operation,
reduces or eliminates negative impacts, and can create positive impacts linked with climate change
and natural environment.

3. Who are the stakeholders (ie groups of people affected by this topic)? Briefly explain how
they are affected.
stakeholders how they are affected
Government Health care system
Consumers Health problems

4. What are the different aspects/ recurring themes in this topic?

 Environmental
 Economic
 Social

5. What are the substitutes for the key terms and other related terms for this topic that come
from your general reading?

substitutes for the key terms other related terms

6. List the different search terms you will use to find journal articles/ books/ reports for your
research. (Remember to combine terms from Q:4 &5)
 Benefits
 Addressing climate change
 Global warming
 Negative impacts
 Overcome
 Natural resources
 Cost savings

7. Write at least 6 questions that will help you to completely answer your research question.
Focus on the role of stakeholders ( Q:3) & aspects ( Q:4)

1. What is a Green building?

2. How can green building help to reduce the greenhouse emissions?
3. How can government help to encourage the use of green buildings?
4. What is the main barrier to implement these systems?
5. What are the main benefits from an environmental point of view?
6. What are the main benefits from a social point of view?
7. Are there economic benefits?
8. What are the consequences of air pollution for consumers?

Questions

1. Why did you choose this question?

First of all, my major is mechanical engineering. I studied a master degree in the area of renewable
energies specifically solar energy. According to my previous research, I found that one of the ways
which are built green buildings is by using solar energy.

2. What do you know about this question?

Due to the serious issue related to global warming and the emissions of greenhouse gases, non-
polluting energy sources are playing an important role in our society. Buildings are responsible by a
high portion of global greenhouse. Therefore, the world is moving to clean energies which allow
greenhouse emissions to reduce in order to overcome the global warming.

3. What would you like to find out?

I would like to find how green buildings can help to reduce this phenomenon?

 What are the main advantages of using these systems?

 What are the main disadvantages of using these systems?
 What are the main barriers which have not allowed its implementation?

4. How are you going to gather information?

- Scientific articles

5. What is the debate about?
