Paediatrics Department

Paediatrics DepartmentThis department started on a low scale with the establishment of the
hospital in 1931.
From a humble beginning of no separate OPD or Ward for Children,
it now can boast of a separate OPD (the child welfare Clinic), a neonatal intensive care unit
(the nursery) and a ward for children.
Nursery:
Serves as the neonatal intensive care unit of the department. It has 7 beds, 5 improvised
incubators, 1 ambu bag and 4 Oxygen Cylinders. The theatre is equipped with neonatal
resuscitation equipment.
The Nursery is presently handled by the Paediatric team of doctors supported by 6 ward and
health aids specially trained in neonatal nursing care.
Children Ward:
Has 50 beds (30 medical and 20 surgical). It has 5 Oxygen cylinders-3 movable and 2
concentrators.
It also has 2 ambu bags and presently managed by the Paediatric team of Doctors
supported by 9 nurses and 5 ward and health aids.
Child Welfare Clinic:
- Formerly called the Under 5 Clinic, Now offers out patient services to children from birth up
to 13 years.
- It has basic children OPD devices such as weighing scales, stadiometer, consulting tables
and 2 examination couches.
- It is also equipped with a laptop computer and printer. Managed by the paediatric team of
doctors, 2 nurses and 3 ward and health aids supported by 3 administrative staff, 2 field
workers, a runner and laboratory technician from KCCR.
The department has accreditation from the Ghana Medical and Dental Council as well as the
Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons to train housemen and residents in paediatrics.
Presently, the department has 1 Paediatrician, 2 residents in paedictrics, 2 medical officers
and 2 house officers.
The department apart from offering adequate clinical services to patients, is also involved in
a number of clinical research works in collaboration with the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative
Research ( KCCR ) which in itself is affiliated to the Bernard Nortch Institute (BNI) in
Hamburg - Germany, and the school of Medical Sciences - KNUST, Kumasi, Ghana.
Some of the research works currently going on include;
- The malaria vaccine trial - a multi -national clinical phase trial in the development of vaccine
for malaria.
- A comparative study involving artesunate and lumefantrine combination against artesunate
and amodiaquine combination in the treatment of malaria.
- And a multi-module research on fever to establish a diagnostic system for paediatric fevers
and infections diseases.
A research background has now been developed at the child welfare clinic and being
extended to the rest of the department to make future research work in the department easy
