PHY051 Hh Take Home Exam/Assignment

Please use a Physics Test Booklet for your submission.

I. Draw a pictorial representation for the following problem. Do not solve the problem or do any
mathematics.
#1. The light turns green, and a bicyclist starts forward with an acceleration of 1.5 m/s2. How far must she travel to
reach a speed of 7.5 m/s?
#2. A Porsche accelerates from a stoplight at 5.0 m/s2 for five seconds, then coast for three more seconds. How far
has it traveled?
#3. A speed skater moving across frictionless ice at 8.0 m/s hits a 5.0-m- wide patch of rough ice. She sows steadily,
then continues on at 6.0 m/s. What is her acceleration on the rough ice?
#4. A car traveling at 30 m/s runs out of gas while traveling up a 10o slope. How far up the hill will the car coast
before starting to roll back down?
#5. Your roommate drops a tennis ball from a third-story balcony. It hits the sidewalk and bounces as high as the
second story. Draw a complete motion diagram of the tennis ball from the time it is released until it reaches the
maximum height on its bounce. Be sure to determine and show the acceleration at the lowest point.
#6. Write a short description of the motion of a real object for which the graph below would be a realistic position-
versus-time graph.

Figure 1 Question #6 Figure 2 Question #7

#7. Figure shows the velocity graph of a particle. Draw the particle’s acceleration graph for the interval 0𝑠 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 4 𝑠.
Give both axes an appropriate numerical scale.
#8. Figure shows the position-versus-time graph for a moving object. At which lettered point or points:
A. Is the object moving the fastest?
B. Is the object moving to the left?
C. Is the object speeding up?
D. Is the object turning around?

Figure 3 Question #3

II. Solve each of the following. Show your solution in an orderly manner.
#1. Convert the following to SI units:
A. 8.0 in B. 66 ft/s C. 60 mph D. 14 in2 E. 72 μm/ms
#2. A rock is tossed straight up with a speed of 20 m/s. When it returns, it falls into a 10 m deep. A) What is the
rock’s velocity as it hits the bottom of the hole? B) How long is the rock in the air, from the instant it is released until
it hits the bottom of the hole?
#3. A skier is gliding along at 3.0 m/s on horizontal, frictionless snow. He suddenly starts down a 10 o incline. His
speed at the bottom is 15 m/s.
A. What is the length of the incline?
B. How long does it take him to reach the bottom?
#4. Bob walks 200 m south, then jogs 400 m southwest, then walks 200 m in a direction 30o east of north.
A. Draw an accurate graphical representation of Bob’s motion. Use a ruler and a protractor!
B. Use component method to find the displacement that will return Bob to his starting point by the most direct
route. Give your answer as a distance and a direction.
#5. Jim’s dog Sparky runs 50 m northeast to a tree, then 70 m west to a second tree, and finally 20 m south to a
third tree.
A. Draw a picture and establish a coordinate system.
B. Calculate Sparky’s net displacement in component form.
C. Calculate Sparky’s net displacement as a magnitude and angle.
