1. GENERAL

The PAN-ASIA model PAPS-307E series electric - pneumatic type tank level & draft gauging system
which has been designed to measure the level of ballast
tanks, fuel oil tanks, Lub. oil, and draft.
The system is featured with its easy maintenance and high accuracy consisting of
1) Air purge unit,
2) Constant flow regulator,
3) Indicator,
4) Gauge saver,
5) Air supply unit.
6) P/I converter.
2. MEASURING PRINCIPLE
The principle is based on the measurement of the hydrostatic head by providing a constant low flow
of air which opens at the tank bottom.
When the light quantity of air supplied from the flow regulator is discharged through the purge mouth
and goes up in the form of bubbles,(This is the reason why the measuring principle sometimes is
referred to as to bubbler method) An air pressure corresponding to the liquid level considering the
viscosity will be built up in the sounding pipe.
If the specific gravity of the liquid is known and a pressure in the sounding pipe is measured, it is
possible to calculate the distance from the pipe opening to the surface by means of the above
expression.
The pressure in the purge pipe, i.e. the measuring depth pressure is transferred to the indicator for
remote indication.

5. FEATURES

- Simple construction and easy maintenance

The proper application for hazardous areas without explosion proof measures.

- High reliability and accuracy with direct level reading by hydrostatic pressure

- For level alarm purpose, a preset pressure switch to be used on the signal line.

- Full safety to be achieved to prevent from overflow even at lower position than tank top.

6. DESCRIPTION OF EACH COMPONENT

1) AIR SUPPLY UNIT

The unit comprises an air reducing valve, air filter with drain, stop valve and pressure gauge.
It is used to keeps supplying the air of the constant pressure to the secondary of the reducing
valve.
The supply pressure should always be greater than the maximum measuring depth pressure by
1㎏/㎠ or more.
The pressure is adjusted by the reducing valve.

2) SAFETY NON-RETURN VALVE (=AIR PURGE HEAD)

A safety non-return valve as called air purge head is mounted in order to prevent over-flow from
the tank in case of loss of measuring air or overfilling of the tank liquid.
This PAN-ASIA non-return valve is specially designed, distinguished from other products.
If measuring air fails or the tank is overfilled, the liquid rising in the sounding pipe will increase
the air pressure.
As soon as this pressure exceeds the pressure in the pipe with measuring air above the valve the
latter so that no further liquid will rise in the sounding pipe, therefore liquid will never reach the
valve in any case.
Being installed on open deck, this unit is made to seaworthy fully enclosed type of sturdy
structure and of the materials for external equipments and internal system, due consideration is
given for using with sea water, crude oil and F.O., D.O. & L.O.
Safety non-return valve is used for whole level measuring and for open tank with no internal
pressure

3) CONSTANT FLOW REGULATOR WITH BLOW-THROUGH VALVE

As the air flow varies with the change in tank level a constant flow is necessary for
accurate measurement, The regulator sends a constant air flow through the signal line to
the sounding tube(purge pipe), irrespective of the liquid level in the tank.
It is usually adjusted to 1500cc/min. The constant pressure which has been built up in the
measuring tube and is proportional to the liquid level in the tank, can be read from the
indicator.
As shown in the sketch below, the regulator consists of following main parts:

TECHNICAL DATA

- Operating pressure : Normal 4 bars, max. 7 bars

- Operating temperature : -25 to +80℃
- Flow capacity (regulator) : 2000cc/min
- Flow rate is approx. 1500cc/min. from the factory.
- Normal flow for blow-through : On approx. 300 Nl/min.
(at 4 bars input pressure approx. 250 Nl/min.)

4) GAUGE SAVER

The gauge saver is provided before an indicator in order to protect an

indicator from overpressure because there is a possibility that the indicator is
damaged when higher overpressure than the scale range is given to the
indicator due to mishandling or overpressure at the time of overflowing. When overpressure is given,
the valve will be operated automatically, resulting in shutting off air pressure. It is a protective device
for indicators.

5) INDICATOR

There are dial type indicators(Φ100mm and Φ150mm) and vertical type indicator (W×H×D) and
square indicator 144mm×144mm.
The structure of the indicators is the same as that of pressure gauge and mainly the size of 100mm
and 150mm diameters are used.
For zero adjustment of dial type indicator, remove the front glass and pull pointer out and then fix
it at zero point rightly.
The indicator can be calibrated in ㎥ volume of weight and liquid column in meters. The scale unit
can be in meters liquid column. In case of non-linear tanks sounding curves or sounding tables must
be enclosed.

6) P/I CONVERTER

The P940 is converter that pressure value convert to current value.

The P940 has high accuracy pressure sensing element and high resolution current converter type
P940 is loop-powered 4~20mA sensor transmitter.
- MEASURING RANGE -
There are range of six classes and over pressure protecting function maximum over pressure
protecting range as belows.
MEASURING RANGE MAX. OVER PRESSURE
0~0.5bar 2bar
0~1bar 4bar
0~2bar 8bar
0~4bar 10bar
Adjustable span pressure is 40~100% of it's measuring range and operating
temp range is 0℃ to 70℃
- Adjusting span and zero -
1. output span and zero are also determined by dip s/w setting to obtain the
standard range 4~20mA
2. set the dip s/w it's measuring range.
- Zero adjusting -
1. feed zero value of pressure to sensing hole
2. make 4mA using zero adjusting vr.
- Span adjusting -
1. feed : span value of pressure to setting hole
2. make 20mA using zero adjusting vr.
- Checking span and zero -
After span and zero setting please check the output current.
Example

TANK HEIGHT 10M, DEAD ZONE 0.2M, SP.GR 0.85

1) ZERO ADJUST
4mA = 0 BAR
2) SPAN ADJUST
20mA = (10M-0.2M) x 0.85 x 0.1) = 0.833 Bar

7. START-UP

1) In order to obtain accurate measurement, it is important that all pneumatic connections are air-tight.
This is secured by air leakage test described in this manual which is necessary when repairs work
is done.

2) Check that air supply pressure is set to 4㎏/㎠.

8. MAINTENANCE

If impurities in the signal line/pipe are deposited and the pipe comes to be clogged, accurate
measuring becomes impossible. For cleaning in such a case, the blowing-through is required before
every operation.

HOW TO BLOW IT.

Press the push bottom on constant flow regulator. At this time the compressed air is blown through
signal/measuring pipe line. the duration of blowing depends on the length of signal pipeline min. 30
seconds.

9. ZERO SETTING OF INDICATOR

With the air supply turned on, check the zero point of a indicator as follows.
The pointer of indicator should then slowly move to zero. If a correction is necessary, remove the
front glass and pull a pointer out with tool and then fix it at zero point rightly.

10. SETTING OF FLOW RATE

The flow rate is factory pre-set.

If however it required adjustment proceed as follows.

1) Connect flow meter to outlet of constant flow regulator.

2) Setting is performed with very small driver on the needle screw of constant flow regulator.
3) Losing the screw to increase the flow rate and vice versa
4) Setting is adequate when flow rate is 1400cc/min.~1500cc/min.

11. TIGHTNESS TEST (AIR LEAKAGE TEST)

This is secured in the following way. Before checking, it must be checked whether supply air is
reduced.

1) Seal up the signal pipe at the connection of air purge head after disconnecting.

2) Slowly turn the air reduction valve so much to right that the pointor of the indicator show to
maximum indication.

3) When indicator's pointer show maximum indication, close air supply valve.

This pressured air is then sealed in between the air purge head and indicator.
This indicator shows the level of air pressure.
Now the indicator must not fall further.

In case the indication value remains unchanged for several minutes, it means that no air leakage exists
in signal line.

If after a certain period of time the pointer falls further, there is an untightness/air leakage somewhere
in the signal line.

12. AIR-BLOWING

For every reading a blow-through is required. By pushing the pushbutton at the front of flow
regulator, compressed air(4㎏/㎠) is blow through signal line and sounding pipe in order to eliminate
foreign materials or moisture from signal line. The duration of blowing depends on the length of the
signal line, min. 30 seconds.

14. GENERAL CHECK POINT

1) The supply air should be clean and dry. having the specified pressure.
2) All air line must be free from the air leakage.
3) The purge mouth should be mounted at such a place which is free from
pressure fluctuation. Above all, avoid the vicinity around the suction bellmouth.
4) The purge pipe should have the inclination of over 1/4 so that the drain
and the like may flow out by the natural gravity, in consideration of the
trim and heel of the ship.
5) If the specific gravity at the indicator graduation is different from that of the measuring liquid,
the specific gravity correction must be made in reference to the calibration table.

6) Even in case of the open tank, the tank inner pressure is sometimes
added to the pressure level due to the flow resistance of the vent pipe.
Check this point without fail.
7) In the polyurethane tube is used for the air piping work, take the
sufficient allowance in consideration of the thermal expansion of the tube.
Avoid the undue tension or sharp bending.
8) Never stop the supply air, even when the measuring is not made as a rule.
