Growing demands
Ongoing developments in plant
engineering require drive units
capable of higher and higher power
density. The design of motor and
drive unit is becoming more and
more compact without affecting the
actual performance of the drive.
This consequently leads to smaller
diameters
of motor and gearbox shafts which
then suffer from reduced load capac-
ity. At the same time, plant engi-
neers ask for faster and easier
assembly and increased service
life.
New solutions
In order to meet these demands,
Voith Turbo has developed a cou-
pling package consisting of the
proven turbo coupling and a new
connection technology. This new
system benefits largely from the
experience and the know-how
gained from the production of over
one million Voith turbo couplings.
Principle
The weight of the turbo coupling is
distributed to both the driving and
the driven shaft via two discpack
couplings. The reduced load on

shaft and bearings contributes
significantly to an extended service
life of the bearings. The turbo cou-
pling is equipped with torsionally
stiff metal disc couplings (GPK)
which feature a disc pack as flexible
key element. This produces torsion-
al stiffness in circumferential direc-
tion. Shaft displacements can be
corrected due to angular and axial
flexibility. The development of the
metal disc pack coupling has been
