BLOCKBUSTER: JURRASIC PARK

SUMMARY
Jurassic park is a movie about great advancements in scientific technology which have enabled a small group of people to innovate an
island of full living dinosaurs. Within the film, a park employee attempts to steal dinosaur eggs for his own satisfaction, which then causes
significant security problems which led to systems shutting down, resulting to all the dinosaurs to run free and cause chaos.
CASTING
Within the movie they had 15 first actors in it. The actors contained Laura Dem, Sam Neil and Richard Attenborough. William Hurt was
initially offered the role of Alan Grant but he turned it down due to the similarities of his other role in Indiana Jones, to the character grant
as he didn’t feel like it was the right to do a film that was similar to what he is already in the making of. In the end Sam Neil was inevitably
casted as Grant three or four weeks before filming began and got started – Sam Neil influenced the success of the film as he is known for
other films such as, “the hostage, the piano” act these are all films that have helped and influenced his fame as people who now like Sam
Neil as an actor will come and see this film as they want to see and identify how he performs and see if he’s suitable for the character. The
film was so successful and well achieved the cast was already well known so this therefore meant that it was more likely to be streamed
and viewed more, as people are more interested to see films with big significant names init.
EQUIPMENT
There was numerous of equipment used such as props and filming equipment for the movie it also has loads of dinosaurs used as
dangerous, terrifying animals roaming the park when all goes downhill and everyone’s panicking. The Tyrannosaurus was acknowledged
by Spielberg as “the star of the movie”, even leading him to rewrite the ending to feature the T. Rex for fear of disappointing and
frustrating the audience. The T. Rex had a big presence and stood 20 feet (6.1 m), weighed 18,000 pounds (7,900kg). The different jeeps
were used in the movie too, there were two sorts of jeeps, the Ford-Explorer Tour Vehicles that ran out of electric power through a track
within the ground which was used as the touring car for visitors, and the gas-powered Jeep Wrangler Staff Vehicles used to get around the
park. Most of the equipment was brought and used which make the company look as if they know they can use it to sequel of the movie.
It also helps to understand that the film makers of the movie are sure that this movie is going to succeed in the filming industry, which it
did as it was the most popular movie and make the most money in 1993, which was then shortly lost after titanic was sent out to cinema
screens. The use of the different equipment in the movie helped make it successful as the use of CGI and props made the film look so life
like which interested the viewers. The cameras used were Panavision Pan flex Platinum, Panavision Primo and Slant Focus Lenses this
helped the success of the movie as it was the best camera around at the time, which could capture the best picture.
BUDGET
The budget for the movie in 1993 was an estimated $63,000,000; this was a massive budget for the new movie which ended coming back
with a Cumulative Worldwide Gross of around $1, 029, 153, and 88. The reason for this budget was due to being so high Is so that the
mechanics and editing off the dinosaurs movements and sound can be at high quality, also for the locations they filmed in they needed to
transport their filming equipment to Costa Rica so that they could film the landscape parts of the movie, to show off this “Jurassic World”.
Arguably, the film was so successful as the CGI and design of the dinosaurs were so successful, this was why the budget was so high due to
the amount of editing and designing of the dinosaurs, also the different camera used to get different shots , the equipment is also what
made the costs high. The camera were the3 best available so it increased the budget , but it made the film to a very high standard so it
brought more money back than spent. The film was the first of its time to use robots and a lot of CGI to show real, this meant that it
needed to look believable for the audience; this affected the budget as they needed to pay more so the equipment and footage can be
more professional. The T-REX was as influential on the film’s success as it was so realistic and believable that the audience loved how it
worked and how it looked and how it made them feel by watching it, people loved the T-REX so much that it meant more people went to
see the movie.
DIRECTOR
Steven Allan Spielberg was born in 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Leah Frances (Posner), a concert pianist and restaurateur, and Arnold
Quack, an electrical engineer who worked in computer development. His parents were both born to Russian Jewish immigrant families.
Steven spent his younger years in Haddon Township, New Jersey, Phoenix, Arizona, and later Saratoga, California. He went to California
State University Long Beach, but dropped out to pursue his entertainment career. He gained notoriety as an uncredited assistant editor on
the classic western Wagon Train (1957). Among his early directing efforts were Battle Squad (1961), which combined World War II footage
with footage of an airplane on the ground that he makes you believe is moving. He also directed Escape Nowhere (1961), which featured
children as World War Two soldiers, including his sister Anne Bay, and The Last Gun (1959), a western. All of these were short films. The
next couple of years, Spielberg directed a couple of movies that would portend his future career in movies. In 1964, he directed Firelight
(1964), a movie about aliens invading a small town. In 1967, he directed Slipstream (1967), which was unfinished. However, in 1968, he
directed Album' (1968), which featured the desert prominently, and not the first of his movies in which the desert would feature so
prominently. Amblin' also became the name of his production company, which turned out such classics as Extra Testimonial (1982).
STAR WARS-THE FORCE AWAKENS:

PRE-PRODUCTION REQUIREMENTS

FILMS SUCCESS AND HOW PRE PRODUCTION HELPED

The Force Awakens is a 2015 American space opera film produced, co-written
and directed by J.J Abrams is the first Star Wars film not to involve franchise
creator George Lucas. Set 30 years after return of the Jedi, the film follows Rey,
Finn and Poc’s search for Luke Skywalker and their fight alongside the residence.

The green screen is used within the movie multiple times throughout; the image
has been edited before and programed on a computer so that it can then be
placed into editing so that the shot has the full background of the environment.
The environment will be demonstrated in the story boards which were made
before hand, this therefore helps the directors and editors create a great film.
The actors will do the scene with a green screen and then be edited out so it all comes together. The green screen was needed as the
locations the film is set in aren’t all realistic or accessible so this means that the locations are made by an artist then and then added into
the film in the background so that it looks realistic and believable for the audience. They use green screen to make a more complex areas
such as space battle, insides of the ship cargo areas etc., the use of green screen helped influence the success as it made the film look
more realistic and it will interest the audience as some people like to see varies of locations the artist has created, and made for the film.
Although it cost it cost a lot more money to use and create a green screen, it is well worth it as the film will become more successful,
therefore more money for people involved.

Pre-production helped in numerous ways. One of the ways was through a story board, these helped as they were able to different shots
which would illustrate what the movie will be like and then could see if anything needed to be changing and where edits are needed. By
using story boards it helps the director and production team film the scenes quicker with ease, considering the longer they take to shoot
the movie the more money they are losing as they need to pay staff and keep equipment and stunt men, so they story boards process is a
quick duration where an artist removes part they don’t like therefore add new stuff, the use of the story board help to give an visual
understanding and vivid structure to the audience, Instead of jumping in and filming therefore changing the scene numerous times. The
storyboard helps the success of the movie as it can signify to the director how the film will look and can be altered before filming begins
which will cut times down, therefore meaning will come to cinema sooner, if story boards won’t use then filming process would of taken
longer and it would of cost the film makers more funds as the scene would have changed and attend on set with no visual understanding
of what it will look like before.

The designing of props will have been done around the same time as the story boards, the props need to be designed on a software, such
as google stretch or pro desktop and it must signify how he prop looks in colour and extreme detailed in included. By introducing this it
helps the characters come to reality as their weapons, masks and ships are all made before so that if changes need to be made they can be
done be done before production and filming ends, This highly influences the success of the film as it helps the props designed to the same
style as the character or environment, this is all conventional to the genre as all props, link to the genre of sci-fi.

The designers will also have to think about how they can help produce the different character like the space monsters and the variety of
species pf people within the movie, sketchers are done before so that if it changes are needed in design of them for reasons of its too
graphic or it doesn’t make the scene, it can be done before the final production and shots are made.

HOW PRE PRODUCTION HELPED

Pre – production helped the film become successful as the movie needed to have all the main work such as character stunts and scripts.
This helped production be quick and efficiently as the story boards have been created so each scene should be set out like the way on the
story board have been created so each scene should be laid out like the way on the story board, the script have been read and confirmed
by ten writers and five producers so this allows the actors to start learning their lines. The creating of all black ground scenes and CGI is
made before the film is fresh so that they can edit it into the shot so the scene looks more reality.

The pre-production creation mainly make creating the whole film, easier as they can see how everything should be done before it’s made.
This means if anything needs to change throughout the production it can be done without affecting the budget and the time massively.

Within the YouTube industry there are videos of a drone called the S74 drone. The video signifies how it was made and transversed from a
sketch to a small robot that is on the screen. As you can see at 0.25 you see that the drone has a shell made and he was designed on piece
of paper at first. The S74 drone was designed a number of engineers and artists, who were then put together by an organization of artists,
which was made in steps of the shell being, produced then the outer parts and then planting design and final extras to make the robot
more realistic and believable. The robots is conventional to the genre as there are many different robots in
the film ranging from huge robots to little pip stop workers, and there is a similar robot called r2-d2 who is
very famous and known from previous star wars film. Interestingly, r2-d2 looks similar too this S74 drone.
The drone has been designed around the idea and structure of this robot which is iconic to the film star
wars due to the earlier drone r2-d2. This massively helps the audience and viewers that the genre is still the
same and still has the Star Wars vibe to it even though there’s some changes and is more modem.
VARIOUS PREPRODUCTION RECOURSES

SCRIPTS AND DRAFTS

Scripts and drafts were originally made so they can make scripts and show other writers. They can edit it, and improve parts in script that
need to be changed to improve the movie. In a massive scale movie like Star Wars they normally have about 8 writers to help produce and
make the script for the movie to have the best possible outcome. The reason Star Wars has so many writers is because the script needs to
be examined and looked at so all the writers have adapted to the new script. The producer of the film has the final say if he’s proud of the
script and is allowable to be presented to the public. Many drafts are written so that the CGI can be tested out in the scene with multiple
drafts then the best one is picked and added into the real edit and adjustments in the movie.

RISK ASSESMENT

Within the film Star Wars the producer had to conduct multiple risk assessments due to being such a stunt unrealistic film, with loads of
moving species. Within the risk assessment there are made so that hazards are seen before production, they therefore find out how it
avoids or aid the event if the hazards happens. For example, if the actor was to get hurt in climbing mountain scene they would need to
conduct tests on the mountain to make sure there are no faults in the components which could possibly cause an accident towards the
actors or staff. All these potential risks would need to be spotted and identified before the movie begins or filming with in the area they’ve
picked. This is purposely done to make all staff; actors and extras are all safe and feel comfortable in their working environment. This is
significant because if these aren’t checked and prevented or monitored it will result in an accident which would then mean the production
time would be increased as the cast members or team member needs to recover before filming more.

LOCATION

Within Star Wars (Force Awakens) was filmed in London in a place called pinewood Studios. The studio was picked because it has lots of
green screens and cgi systems. For this happening – it therefore meant it was easier for the film crew, first aid and other relevant people
or equipment they need for the movie, this mean it’s at hand whenever they need it. The crew and cast travelled to numerous locations
around the globe to film multiple scenes for different fictional planets. For example, ‘Kiki’ was filmed in Sarah desert in Africa. They
travelled multiple locations so film the different areas for Star Wars which the cast were located and also the air base rebels held in etc.
This traveling would influence the budget as they need to pay for all expenses which is travel for cast, travel members, catering, and
equipment to the country or location. Star Wars also rented loads and loads of cars and trucks, this would cost massive amounts of funds
which is significant because it further influence the budget used for the film Star Wars. The locations that were found for the film were
crucially ideal due to the Sarah desert making a great location that would be turned into ‘Kiki’ as it looked remote like the universe needed
to be, it also has no public interference which therefore means the production is faster.

MINIMAJOR: EX MACHINA:

PLOT
Programmer Caleb Smith, who works for the dominant search engine company Blue Book, wins an office contest for a one-week visit to
the luxurious, isolated home of the CEO, Nathan Bateman, who lives alone apart from a servant Kyoko, who, according to Nathan, does
not speak English. Nathan has built a female humanoid robot named Ava with artificial intelligence. Ava has already passed a simple Turing
test and Nathan wants Caleb to judge whether Ava is genuinely capable of thought and consciousness, and whether he can relate to Ava
despite knowing she is artificial.
Ava has a robotic body but a human-looking face, and is confined to her apartment. During their talks, Caleb begins to feel attracted to
Ava, and she expresses a romantic interest in him and a desire to experience the world outside. Ava tells him she can trigger power
outages that temporarily shut down the surveillance system which Nathan uses to monitor their interactions, allowing them to speak
privately. The power outages also trigger the building's security system, locking all the doors. During one outage, Ava tells Caleb that
Nathan is a liar who cannot be trusted.
CASTING
There were numerous actors but not many of them were well known. The film was arguably very simple and easy going so it wasn’t too
complicated for the audience to understand it. The main actor Dom Gleazmon has featured in TV programmes and films. He featured in
the famous show Harry Potter so this interested the audience but also effected budget because it would have been abit money to have
him involved. The budget was also quite hefty due the people behind the scenes. Alex Garland Director, Screenwriter Alex Garland

SMALL SCALE FILM: FOUR LIONS

Four Lions is a 2010 British satirical dark comedy film which is about a small group of young Muslim men living in Sheffield decide to wage
jihad, and they hatch a plan to become suicide bombers. They try multiple things such as strapping bombs to a crow, which didn’t work
and by hiding the bombs in costumes for a marathon run. The movie throughout has lots of links to terrorism, but the movie is trying to
make it more funny than a serious film, as they constantly have jokes, laughing and small acts of comedy so that it can stay funny
throughout

BUDGET

The budget for this small scale movie is very large considering it is only a small scale movie production it his more than triple of the mini
major film, the Texan chainsaw massacre at only $600,000, whereas the four lions had a huge budget of 2.5 million GBP. Now this was
mostly due to the explosions and different other large screen events. This movie came back with a £608,608 on its opening night, and was
quite popular with movie fans, as it got a 7.3 out of 10 stars. The budget was this high due to all the small and large scale explosions they
had in this movie they had multiple events like a rocket launcher explosion and a man blowing up after tripping over and other sorts of
large explosions

CASTING

The whole movie only casted 31 people including extras and obviously main characters, the main characters were: Reamed as Omar,
(th e only competen t jih adi in his terroris t cell), KayvanNova k as Waj, (th e cous in of Omar) and 2 other "terrorists",
(Nigel Lindsay, AdeelAkhtar). Aswecan see from the number of the casting, warp films, film 4 and wild bunch, only had a small budget and
with all the explosions in the movie, it is evident that they couldn’t spend much on casting as they only had 31 members of a cast,
including extras and background people.

DISTRUBUTION

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2010, the movie was rated R for language throughout, including some sexual
references and obvious terrorist comments or acts. It was then set out in cinemas for several weeks until like all movies they then stop
screening it, once the screening stopped it came to TV’s and on channels such as film 4 (obviously), channel 4 and some other less known
channels. It was then released in the UK on DVD and Blu-ray on 30 August 2010, and in the U.S. on 8 March 2011.Locations
