General Rules
Current CHSAA (High School) rules are in effect with the exceptions outlined below.
All students must check in with their student ID and all non‐students must check in with a state
ID in order to be eligible to participate every week!
Players and Substitutions
A team shall consist of 5 players on the court, but a team is allowed to start a game with 4
players.
If a team is playing with 4 players and a player becomes injured or fouls out, the team can elect
to continue with only 3 players.
o No less than 3 players will be allowed at any time.
If a team is playing with 4 players and a player is ejected, the team is not allowed to continue
and the game will be considered a forfeit.
A 5‐minute grace period will be given after the posted start time to allow teams to have the
minimum numbers of players required to begin.
o Once the period expires, the game will be declared a forfeit.
o If the players on the team show up during the 5‐minute grace period, then the game will
continue with a 15‐minute first half and the opposing team will be given 6 points.
o Additional team members arriving after the scheduled start time may be added without
penalty.
Any player that is bleeding must leave the game immediately.
o The bleeding must be stopped and the wound securely covered with an appropriate
bandage before that player can continue to play.
o If the bleeding player is the team’s “fifth”, they can elect to call a timeout to give the
player time to get it bandaged.
o The timeout will be ended at the discretion of the Supervisor.
Equipment
All players must wear non‐marking shoes and gym clothes.
o Players are encouraged to carry in gym shoes to be worn during play.
o If there are any questions concerning footwear, contact the Supervisor.
The game ball will be provided from CRA, but a different ball may be used if both captains agree.
All players must have a visible one or two‐digit number on their shirt or jersey.
o If teams do not have numbered shirts or jersey, the Intramural Sports program will
provide, on loan, numbered penny jerseys that MUST be worn. An undershirt must be
worn underneath these penny jerseys.
o Teams or players without numbered shirts or jerseys will not be permitted to play and
the game will be considered a forfeit.
Players MUST remove ALL jewelry prior to participating, regardless of timing of piercings. NO
TAPING OF JEWELRY
Any exceptions (wedding bands, religious jewelry, etc.) MUST be cleared by the Supervisor.
For play on rectangular backboards ‐ the sides, top, and bottom are considered in play.
o Guide wires and basket supports are considered out.
Duration of Game and Timeouts
Games will consist of two 20‐minute halves.
1st Half: Continuous clock that will only stop during time‐outs or injuries.
2nd Half: Continuous clock until 2 minutes are left.
o The clock will stop at all dead ball situations:
Out‐of‐bounds, fouls, timeouts, and injuries.
o If a team is ahead by 12 points or more, the clock will continue to run, except for
timeouts and injuries.
Timeouts: Each team gets 2 timeouts per half, 1 minute in duration.
o Unused timeouts do not carry over to overtime.
o If a team has no timeouts and calls for one, a non‐flagrant technical foul will be assessed
to the team bench.
Overtime: Games that end in a tie will be continued with a 2‐minute overtime period.
o Each team will get one timeout for the overtime session; no rollover timeouts.
o If the score is still tied after the first overtime session, a second overtime will begin and
the first team to score wins.
Mercy Rule: A game will be declared over if a team is ahead by 30+ points with 10 minutes or
any point thereafter in the 2nd half.
The game is started with a jump ball; thereafter, any held ball situations, and the start of the
second half, will use the alternating possession procedure.
Fouls
All players who talk to the officials must do so with courtesy and respect. Failure to do so may
result in a technical foul and/or ejection from the game.
Any unsportsmanlike conduct, or flagrant foul, will result in game ejection and ejection from the
gymnasium for that player.
o Failure to comply will result in game forfeiture.
Senseless and unsportsmanlike taunting and trash talking will not be tolerated.
o 1st occurrence = team warning
o 2nd occurrence = player technical foul
5 personal fouls will result in disqualification from the game.
On the 7th team foul in each half, the bonus (one and one) situation will be in effect.
On the 10th team foul in each half, the double bonus (two free throws) will be in effect.
The accumulation of 3 team technical fouls in one game will result in a game forfeiture.
The accumulation of 2 personal technical fouls in one game or 4 over the course of the season
will result in game ejection and a one game suspension for that player.
o The ejected player must meet with Dave Lamothe or Kameron Garrett before becoming
eligible to play again.
All technical fouls will result in the awarding of 2 free throws and possession of the ball to the
team shooting the free throws. The clock does NOT stop during the shooting of these free
throws, unless it is within the last two minutes of the game.
Players are allowed to dunk the ball, but any hanging on the rim will result in a technical foul.
Substitutes must report to the scorekeeper before entering and must be signaled onto the court
by the official.
o Failure to do so will result in a technical foul.
An intentional foul results in 2 free throws plus possession of ball at the original site of the
infraction. The clock does NOT stop during the shooting of these free throws, unless it is within
the last two minutes of the game.
To purposely fake a free throw attempt is a violation and will result in a technical foul.
Low bridging or ducking under an airborne player is considered unsportsmanlike conduct,
whether intentional or not.
o This will result in a flagrant foul and the player will be ejected from the game.
Swinging of elbows results is a violation and will result in a personal or flagrant foul depending
upon whether or not contact occurred.
Player and Spectator Code of Conduct
All players are held accountable to their respective school’s Student Handbook Code of Conduct.
Teams are responsible for actions of spectators and/or anyone else associated with their team,
including actions of harassment, abuse or interference with players, officials, scorers, and
supervisors.
Auraria Campus Police will be called for any illegal behavior or activity and legal enforcement
will be at their discretion.
Any player who violates conduct rules (verbal/physical abuse etc.) before, during, or after the
game may be ejected from the game, and/or subsequent game(s), as well as the gymnasium.
o Any act of physical abuse before, during, or after a game will result in suspension for the
remainder of the season and up to a maximum of one year from the date of the
incident, and/or suspension from participation in the intramural sports program.
The parties involved will be referred to their respective school’s Judicial Office
and further criminal or civil action may take place.
If any participant or spectator is ejected or removed from a game or the gym for a violation of a
Code of Conduct, they are automatically suspended from all further intramural activities and will
lose access to the gym until they meet a Campus Recreation at Auraria full‐time professional
staff member.
