INEL 5606 Microwave Engendering I

Exam # 2

Issued: Thursday, Oct 24, 2019 Due: Thursday, Oct 31, 2019

Problem 1
a) Design a single stub tuner using an open-circuited stub to match a load impedance ZL = 100 + j80 Ω to
a 50 Ω microstrip line. Include Smith chart and all calculations.
b) Assuming that the load is matched at 2 GHz, and that the load consists of a resistor and inductor in
series, plot the reflection coefficient magnitude (|S11|) in dB from 1 GHz to 3 GHz with frequency steps
of 20 MHz. Use ADS to solve this problem. Assume ideal transmission line components (TLIN and
TLOC). Explain the results

I used Ideal T lines and we can observe that the frequency of resonance at 2GHz is -25.201. This could be
better if we simulate using ideal microstrip lines.

c) Repeat part b, but now, implement the matching network with microstrip technology. Assume a
substrate material with a relative dielectric constant of 2.55 and a thickness of 31 mils (set tanθ = 0 and T
=0 in linecalc). Use components as MLIN and MLOC to implement the network (See figure 1.a). Is there
any difference to the previous result?. Explain the results

With microstrip technology occurs an improvement but it was not much as I expected. Indeed the value
are very similar. I think could be an error in the simulation.

d) Use a MTEE to simulate the junction of the three lines and a MLEF to simulate open-circuited
microstrip line with the effect of fringing fields at the open edge as shown in figure 1.b. Include plots for
|S11| in dB form from 1 to 3 GHz. Do you still have a good match at 2 GHz?. Explain the results

The reflected power its better that the simulated with ideal and microstrip line because the MLEF inserts
a parasitic capacitance and for that reason we can see an improvement in the simulation.

e) Improve your matching network by optimizing l2 first and then l1 if necessary. Include plots for |S11|
in dB form from 1 to 3 GHz.
Hand in your circuit schematic for all the cases above. Make sure that all the plots and schematics are
properly labeled

Problem 2
a) Repeat problem 1 using lumped components. Design lumped components for a frequency of 2 GHz.
Include Smith chart and all calculations.
b) Plot the reflection coefficient magnitude (|S11|) in dB from 1 GHz to 3 GHz with frequency steps of 20
MHz. Use ADS to solve this problem. Use ideal components without microstrip line. Explain the results

Using the Smith Chart I find a Capacitor value of 1.22pF and a Inductor value of 5.38nH. Then I proceed
to find the values using the formulas discussed in the classroom and as discussed we can have 2 solutions.
The first solution was the simulation running in the following figures.

Figure. Solution 1, a capacitor parallel to ZL with and inductor in series.

Frequency response of solution 1.

As we can see there is an excellent improvement. The values compared with the Smith Chart are very
similar.

Using the values of the second solution and putting this time an inductor parallel to ZL we have a frequency
response of -40db approximately. We can see that using the values with the Smith Chart (first solution)
was the best option.

c) Repeat part c, but now, include 50 Ω microtrip lines of 2 mm between the components to interconnect
them. Use MLIN and MTEE to implement your circuit. ). Is there any difference to the previous result?

Problem 3
Find the π equivalent circuit for a microstrip gap of 1 mm at frequency of 2 GHz. Assume a system
impedance of 50 Ω. Obtain the scattering matrix to generate the model from Momentum.

Steps to obtain the data from Momentum

1) First create a project in ADS. Then generate a schematic circuit as shown below:

2) Generate layout. Create a substrate material with a relative dielectric constant of 2.55 and a thickness
of 31 mils.

3) Set both ports with a reference plane shift of 2 mm

4) Set the frequency plan as single frequency with F start of 2 GHz

5) Perform simulation to find the parameters S11, S12, S21, and S22.
