Project Title:
SMART BILLING SYSTEM FOR ENERGY METER
INTRODUCTION
An automatic remote smart meter reading system is presented in this synopsis. This is useful
to obtain meter reading when desired so meter readers don’t need to visit each customer for the
consumed energy data collection and to distribute the bill slip. Microcontroller arduino can be
used to monitor and record the meter readings. In case of a customer defaulter, no need to send
a person of a utility/administrator to cut off the customer connection. Utility can cut off and
reconnect the customer connection by short message service (SMS). The customer can check
the status of electricity (load) from anywhere. In this system energy meter readings are being
transferred by making use of communication method.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:
There are many problems in conventional billing and error. Some human mistakes may also
occur in manual billing. Analysis the conventional billing some of the common observed errors
and mistakes. Meter reader person must be required to read that meter of each consumer for
reading power consumption. By using of electromechanical meters meter reading changes and
errors are more. Calculated bill is used at time when extreme weather conditions occur and
meters to be read are not easily accessible to the reading. Consumer is not updated of his usage.
So it is problematic for consumer and supplier. Nowadays wireless technology is invented and
this wireless technology is widely used for AMR (automated meter reading) systems and for
many other applications in the developed countries but now also used in the developing
countries.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES
 To design a smart billing system for energy meter, it sent to the consumer via
SMS as well as to administration/respective company by using communication
medium.
 To design a smart billing system for energy meter, it measures load voltage, load
current, power factor, units consumed and also show the respective bill on the
meter.
 To design a smart billing system for energy meter, whenever the electricity slab
will change, then automatically change the rupee value per unit.
 To design a smart billing system for energy meter, whenever the consumer consume
maximum units like above 400 units then rates of the respected unit is increase as per
rule of the company and also alarming message will show on the meter "Dear
Customer You Consume Above 400 Units So You Should Save The Electricity
Properly"

SIGNIFICANCE:
A smart meter is an electronic device that records consumption of electric energy in
intervals of an hour or less and communicates that information at least daily back to
the utility/respective company for monitoring and billing. Smart meters enable two
way communication between the meter and the central system. Unlike home energy
monitors, smart meters can gather data for remote reporting. Such an advanced
metering infrastructure (AMI) differs from traditional automatic meter reading
(AMR) in that it enables two-way communications with the meter. The term Smart
Meter often refers to an electricity meter, but it also may mean a device measuring
natural gas or water consumption. Similar meters, usually referred to as interval or
time-of-use meters, have existed for years, but "Smart Meters" usually involve real-
time or near real-time sensors, power outage notification, and power quality
monitoring. These additional features are more than simple automated meter reading
(AMR). They are similar in many respects to Advanced Metering Infrastructure
(AMI) meters. Interval and time-of-use meters historically have been installed to
measure commercial and industrial customers, but may not have automatic reading.

SCOPE:
Smart billing system for energy meter deals with hourly energy consumption values
acquired from the energy provider. These standard values help energy utilities and
consumers to know their energy consumption which is reported on an hourly basis.
We can reduce the manual efforts to take the reading from the energy meter. This is
a fast and efficient system.
