Goal Essay Charlotte Kuhn 1/17/2020

Have you ever wanted to see the “Real Florida”? Cycling is the best way to see this great state.
We have more to offer than just crowded theme parks and beaches. Once you get off the main
interstates and start heading toward the back roads you will find smaller roads called Rails-to-
Trails. These trails are for bicyclist and pedestrians only, they run the length of most of the
entire state. Because of my love for Florida and cycling I have a goal of completing all the Rails-
to-Trails in Florida and here is how I will complete my goal. I need to know how long it will take
me to complete all the trails, what type of bicycle to purchase and I need to start a riding
routine.

The first step to reaching my goal of bicycling all the Rails-to Trails in Florida is to research how
long it will take me to complete all the trails. I will need to know how many trails are in Florida. I
can find that information by researching online through the Rails-to-Trails company or I can
purchase a book with all the trails and maps. This will allow me to see a total number (by the
way, its fifty-two).

Next, to reach my goal, I need to figure out what type of bicycle to purchase. Before I rush out
and by a bicycle I need to know what the terrain is on the trails. Are they paved, dirt, gravel or
all three. Something else to consider is should I get a women’s specific bicycle? The best thing
to do is to test ride several bicycles including men’s and unisex to see what fits to me. Not just
buy the prettiest. I also need to look into how much I need to spend on a quality bicycle. For
this I will need to visit a couple local bicycle shops and see what the prices are for a quality
bicycle that will last me the rest of my life.

In addition, to reaching my goal of bicycling all the Rails-to Trails in Florida I will need to start a
riding routine. This by far will be the hardest part of the goal to start. It will take true
dedication. I can start by committing to riding every Wednesday and Sunday. By splitting up my
ride days it will allow me to recover my sore muscles and a sensitive bottom. Another way to
help encourage me to stay riding and meet my goal is to join a group or cycling club. This will
help me on those days I just don’t feel like riding. I also need to make sure I continuously up my
riding mileage every week. If I start off riding five miles the first week, I should up that to six
miles on week two and so on. Once I am able to ride thirty miles, I will feel comfortable tackling
all the other trails in Florida.

My goal may seem crazy to others but for me it’s all about stopping to smell the roses, meet
new people, try amazing foods, make lasting memories and seeing the most beautiful things in
this life at a slower pace. When I complete my goal of Cycling all the trails in Florida I can say I
got a chance to see the “Real Florida” and all its beauty.
