UNCSA School of Drama-Reading for Scott Zigler’s Acting classes, Sept.

2019

***NOTE: This cover sheet is more accurate on policy than the cover sheet of the pdf.
Differences are italicized.***

This cover sheet also contains on note on A Practical Handbook for the Actor missing from the
pdf cover sheet, and two TED talks that actors should try to watch in addition to reading the
material in the packet.

Please read the attached material as we progress through the semester. You will want to read the
chapter on “Habit” as soon as possible, you can progress through the rest of the reading as you
can schedule and interest allows. You will probably want to watch the TED talks listed below
sooner rather than after finishing all the reading.

You can familiarize yourself with A Practical Handbook for the Actor, but you should not give it
a thorough read prior to the first class. This will be explained more fully in class. You may want
the book for reference, as the core ideas are still accurate, and for one optional exercise that will
be suggested in class, but much of the material is old and not fully in line with the way we will
be working in class, and we don’t want the book to cause confusion.

Please respect the following protocols for this class. These protocols are specific to Scott’s
classes only, and other faculty members may operate their classrooms under a different set of
classroom standards:

Students will not be admitted late to class under any circumstances, with the following
exception: Students will be admitted if they have a health care appointment, dental health
appointment, or school requirement that necessitates their late arrival and they have
previously notified the instructor in writing.

Absolutely no eating in class. Beverages are ok.

The classroom must remain silent before the beginning of class and during any breaks
taken during class. Please have conversations in the hallway.

In addition to the reading, please watch the following two TED talks:

http://www.ted.com/talks/daniel_kahneman_the_riddle_of_experience_vs_memory
http://www.ted.com/talks/amy_cuddy_your_body_language_shapes_who_you_are

The following book is not required reading for this class, and has not been ordered, but some
concepts from it will be referenced during class:

The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell
