DIRECTOR’S NOTE SPECIAL THANKS
West Side Story is the masterpiece of Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein, and Matt Berman, Jamie Biondi, Zachary Carr, Steven Chanan, Ed Chen, Amrit
Stephen Sondheim. It moves Romeo and Juliet to the streets of 1950s Chima, Sin-Tung Chiu, Sandy Cressman, Julianna Fitts, Lourdes Garcia, Kim

Each musical has its own unique challenges and rewards. With West Side Story, Janice Toy, Desiree Viray, Chris Wade
the music and dance, as some of the greatest in Broadway history, is also some of
the most difficult. The show has also demanded sophisticated ensemble acting, and the cast’s and crew’s wonderful parents
as well as combat and dialect work. This cast has done an extraordinary job.
But the most challenging part of West Side Story is its subject matter. Viewed
through the distancing lens of Shakespeare’s Elizabethan setting, it is hard to
remember how this is a story about prejudice and hatred marinated in the
excesses of adolescence. This nearly 60-year old musical remains painfully EXTRA SPECIAL THANKS TO

West Side Story presents life for those who moved from Puerto Rico to the
tenements of New York in the 1950s. In the process, our cast has learned about
Puerto Rico itself, and they have had many questions – why can’t the people of
Puerto Rico, American citizens who pay Federal taxes, vote in Federal elections?
Why are there Federally-imposed commerce laws unique to Puerto Rico that help
make its per capita income half that of the rest of the U.S.? Most of all, why did
Florida, when struck in August, 2017 by Hurricane Irma, a Category 4 storm that A huge thanks to the Nueva family for their very generous anonymous donation
killed 61, receive 40,000 FEMA-directed personal, while Puerto Rico, struck that to the Nueva Musical Theatre Academy.
same season by Category 4 Hurricane Maria, receive less than half that number
from FEMA and lose 2,975 of its citizens? It is in this spirit that the cast has
“adopted” and learned about Puerto Rican towns still rebuilding from the
hurricane (their map and findings are on display in the lobby), and that we are
holding a fund-raiser in the lobby for Puerto Rican recovery. It is our hope that
West Side Story’s celebration of its beautiful “Maria” will aid the people of
Puerto Rico after their devastating “Maria.”
We hope you will find this performance as moving and inspiring as I have in
watching these young people create it over these last couple of months.
