THE 4TH SUNNY HILLS DRAMA PRODUCTION

March 2, 3, 4, 2023
DIRECTOR’S NOTE
This show contains imagery that could upset or offend certain viewers,
such as Nazi paraphernalia and firearms. These elements are included
in this show only to accurately portray the story and history. Sunny Hills
strongly condemns all forms of racism, anti-semitism, and violence. For
education on the Holocaust and how to confront anti-semitism, please
visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Website. For
education on the public health approach gun violence, please visit
the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence Website.

Thank you for your support in coming to see Sunny Hill’s production
of The Sound of Music. The only reason this show stands before you
is because of this massive community of people that come together
to put their minds, expertise, and love into this production. It’s quite
an incredible experience to see everyone do their part to make this
story come to the stage, and I am forever grateful. From the actors,
to the stage managers, to the tech crew, to the creative team, to
the SHHS staff, and to my friends, my family, and my wonderful fiancé
Hailey (May 2023!!), thank you; I could not have done this without
you.

It’s been a long time since Sunny Hills has had a musical put on the
stage here (four years). I knew that I had to choose something that
would bring people together, not only for students to be a part of,
but also for the Sunny Hills community to get excited about seeing
live theater again. This show is near and dear to my heart. I was in
this show at La Habra High School back in 2011; I played Franz, the
butler (my first speaking role). For directing my first musical I wanted
to do something that I was not only familiar with and had fond
memories of, but something that I know many of you have a special
connection to, as this show has been loved and cherished by many
for decades.

At its core, The Sound of Music is about family, and I couldn’t think of
a better word to describe this entire cast and crew. We have all
worked so hard together for the past two months to bring this story to
this stage. Like many families, there is love, excitement, growth,
frustration, adversity, support, laughter, and friendship; this process
has been all of these and more. So, thank you for being a part of this
family, and please enjoy The Sound of the Music.

You have brought music back into my home. I had forgotten.

THE STORY
The nuns of Nonnberg Abbey pray while young postulant Maria
Rainer enjoys a day off in the hills. When she returns, Maria
apologizes to Mother Abbess for her transgressions. Unconvinced
that Maria is ready for the abbey, Mother Abbess assigns Maria to
serve as governess to the seven children of a widowed naval
captain.
Upon arrival, Maria observes that Captain von Trapp runs his
home and family strictly. She breaks the regime by teaching the
children to sing. When the eldest child, Liesl, sneaks back into the
house through Maria’s window after secretly meeting her
boyfriend, Rolf, Maria agrees not to betray her.
The Captain returns home with his girlfriend Elsa and her friend
Max, a concert organizer. The Captain is horrified to see his
children playing and dismisses Maria, but changes his mind when
the children greet Elsa with a song.
At a party, the Captain and Maria dance together, and their
chemistry flusters Maria. When the children perform for the guests
before heading to bed, Max thinks their act would be great for
an upcoming music festival. Meanwhile, Maria flees to the abbey.
She confesses her love for the Captain to Mother Abbess, who
reminds her that love is a calling from God.
Maria returns to the von Trapp home. The Captain argues with
Max and Elsa, who do not share his alarm regarding the imminent
Nazi invasion. This political rift ends the Captain’s relationship with
Elsa. The Captain and Maria reveal their love for each other and
marry.
Max enters the family in a music festival against the Captain’s
wishes. When Nazi soldiers arrive to force the Captain into military
service, Maria uses the festival as an excuse to delay his
departure. Max announces that armed forces will escort the
Captain to a naval base immediately following the concert.
As the concert concludes, the family manages to escape the
theater and hide at the abbey. Rolf, now a Nazi soldier, finds the
von Trapps in hiding, but covers for them. Their only way out of
Austria is on foot. The Mother Abbess blesses their journey, and the
family begins its trek over the Alps to neutral Switzerland.
