for
Birla Carbon (Thailand) Factory Project
44 Moo 1, Ayutthaya – Angthong Highway, Tambol Posa,
Amphoe Muang, Angthong Province

1. Introduction

The subsurface investigation for foundation design of the “Birla Crbon (Thiland) Factory
Project” which located at 44 Moo 1, Ayutthaya – Angthong Highway, Tambol Posa, Amphoe Muang,
Angthong province. The total of 2 bored holes were carried out to the depth about 21.45 m. from ground
surface, location of bored holes is shown in figure 1.
Based on investigation data, most of the bore holes have soil condition as follow.
BH-1 (Flue gas desulfurization system zone)
Ground surface to the depth of 1.95 m. consist of stiff sandy clay, grey, CLAY (CL).
Under stiff sandy clay to 9.45 m. consist of medium clay, grey, CLAY (CH)
Under stiff silty clay to 10.95 m. consist of stiff silty clay, brown, CLAY (CL).
Under stiff silty clay to 12.45 m. consist of very stiff sandy clay, brown, CLAY (CL).
Under very stiff sandy clay to 15.45 m. consist of hard fine sandy clay, brown, CLAY (CL).
Under hard fine sandy clay until the end of bore holes consist of very dense silty sand, brown,
SAND (SM)
BH-2 (Air pre heater line 1 zone)
Ground surface to the depth of 1.95 m. consist of loose clayey silty sand, grey, SILTY SAND (SC).
Under loose clayey silty sand to 9.45 m. consist of medium clayey silty sand, grey,
SILTY SAND (SC)
Under stiff silty clay to 10.95 m. consist of very stiff sandy clay, brown, CLAY (CL).
Under very stiff sandy clay to 13.95 m. consist of hard fine sandy clay, brown, CLAY (CL).
Under hard fine sandy clay to 15.45 m. consist of dense silty sand, brown, SAND (SM)
Under hard fine sandy clay until the end of bore holes consist of very dense silty sand, brown,
SAND (SM)

The purpose of this report are to describe the soil condition at the site , analyze and evaluate
tested data and to submit recommendation regarding to foundation design and construction.
2. Subsurface Investigation Procedure.

The boring were performed by rotary drilling rig with hydraulic feed head and adjustable speed
that operate by skill workers. The bore hole were advanced by auger for the first few meters and then
following with wash boring method till the end of boring. The 100 mm. diameter casing and bentonite
slurry were used for stabilizing the hole in clay and sandy materials respectively
The disturbed samples were collected in stiff clay and sandy soil at 1.50 m. interval during the
standard penetration test. In a standard penetration test , a 50.80 mm. (20 inches) of a split barrel sample
was driven into the soil stratum with a 63.50 kg. safety hammer falling through a distance of 76 cm. The
number of blow per 30 cm. of penetration was taken as the standard penetration resistance N value. The
tests were executed in according with ASTM D-1586
The ground water level were also measured one day after the completion of boring operation.

3. Laboratory Testing Programme

The laboratory testing programme included

1. Water content determinations.

2. Atterberg limit test on selected soil samples.

3. Sieve analysis tests on selected soil samples

The test procedures were carried out in accordance with ASTM specification. The summary of
test results were presented in Appendix A of this report.

4. Soil Conditions

The general soil profile is shown in figure 2. The important soil description can be detailed as
follows;
BH-1 (Flue gas desulfurization system zone)
Ground surface to the depth of 1.95 m. consist of stiff sandy clay, grey, CLAY (CL). The natural
water content of this layer is 17.9 % and the SPT N-values between 9 blows / ft.
Under stiff sandy clay to 9.45 m. consist of medium clay, grey, CLAY (CH). The natural water
content of this layer is between 18.2 – 18.6 % and the SPT N-values between 4 - 6 blows / ft.
Under stiff silty clay to 10.95 m. consist of stiff silty clay, brown, CLAY (CL). The natural water
content of this layer is 17.8% and the SPT N-values 13 blows / ft.
Under stiff silty clay to 12.45 m. consist of very stiff sandy clay, brown, CLAY (CL). The natural
water content of this layer is 17.3 % and the SPT N-values 17 blows / ft.
Under very stiff sandy clay to 15.45 m. consist of hard fine sandy clay, brown, CLAY (CL).
The natural water content of this layer is between 16.9 – 17.1% and the SPT N-values between
28 - 41 blows / ft.
Under hard fine sandy clay until the end of bore holes consist of very dense silty sand,
brown,SAND (SM). The natural water content of this layer is between 9.7 – 10.2 % and the SPT N-values
between 53 – 77 blows / ft.
BH-2 (Air pre heater line 1 zone)
Ground surface to the depth of 1.95 m. consist of loose clayey silty sand, grey, SILTY SAND (SC).
The natural water content of this layer is 17.9 % and the SPT N-values between 6 blows / ft.
Under loose clayey silty sand to 9.45 m. consist of medium clayey silty sand, grey, SILTY SAND
(SC). The natural water content of this layer is between 17.1 – 17.8 % and the SPT N-values between
8 - 12 blows / ft.
Under stiff silty clay to 10.95 m. consist of very stiff sandy clay, brown, CLAY (CL). The natural
water content of this layer is 16.8% and the SPT N-values 24 blows / ft.
Under very stiff sandy clay to 13.95 m. consist of hard fine sandy clay, brown, CLAY (CL).
The natural water content of this layer is between 16.3 – 16.5 % and the SPT N-values between 33 - 38
blows / ft.
Under hard fine sandy clay to 15.45 m. consist of dense silty sand, brown, SAND (SM).
The natural water content of this layer is 10.2 % and the SPT N-values 40 blows / ft.
Under hard fine sandy clay until the end of bore holes consist of very dense silty sand,
brown,SAND (SM). The natural water content of this layer is between 9.8 – 10.1 % and the SPT N-values
between 46 - 66 blows / ft.

5. Ground Water Condition

The ground water in the bore holes level recorded 24 hours after completing of the boring is 0.60
m. from ground surface.
Significant fluctuation of ground water level is expected throughout the year expanding upon the
rain fall and rain off

6. Recommendation

General subsoil conditions at the site consisted of :

1. Stiff sandy clay, grey.

2. Medium clay, grey.
3. Loose to medium clayey silty sand, grey.
4. Very stiff to hard fine sandy clay, brown.
5. Dense to very dense silty sand, brown.
Show on figure 2.
Based on available data. Driven pile and spun pile are recommended for all structures to be
constructed and the pile depth should be placed in the very stiff to hard fine sandy clay, brownish grey or
13.00 m. depth below.
