Design a condenser for a 100 kw refrigeration system using R-717. The condenser
temp. is 313 k & the condenser is sub cooled by 10 k. Enthalpy at the end beginning
of compression an 1320 kj/m & 1530 kj/kg. The refrigerant flow rate is 0.1 kg/s. The
economic water velocity is 1.5 m/s & is related with the overall HTC con outer dia.

I/U = 0.13 + 0.5 /V0.8

Pipe diameter are di = 15 mm & do = 20 mm & pipe lengths not to exceed 3000 mm.
The water temp. rise is SK with inlet temp. 303k. obtain the number of tubes &
passes
Basic Design of Direct Expansion Chiller
Some of the design details of a Refrigerant 22, 20 TR, D-X chiller are as follows:
Effective tube length 221.5 cm
Diameter of tubes 1.905 cm OD, 1.704 cm 3ID
Number of refrigerant passes 8
Entering water temperature 11.1 0C
Leaving water temperature 7.20C 10
12
Refrigerant temperature at inlet 2.2 0C
Condensing V 43.3 0C
The water side heat transfer coefficient ho may be taken as 4,650 W. m -20C-1.
The refrigerant side coefficient may be approximated by
hi =230 ∆ t W. m-20C-1
Find the number of tubes/pass. Neglect the thickness & thermal resistance of the tube
wall.
A two cylinder single acting reciprocating compressor with 5% is used in a R 22
refrigeration cycle to take refrigeration capacity of 7.2 TR at 50C ( 3.6 bar )
refrigeration temp. & 400C (9.6 bar) condensing temperature. The compressor index
is 1.15. The speed of the piston is limited to 3 m/s. Take L/D = 0.8 specific volume
as 0.0525 m3/kg
Determine :- 1) power 2) hv3) COP 4) Bore & stroke 5) RPM
