CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Prior to 1972, the fertilizer industry in the Philippines was unrestricted from
control. Fertilizer distribution, importation, and marketing were in the hands of the
private sector, tariffs, and subsidies were lacking, while government restriction.
However, with the cumulative recognition of fertilizer as one of the essential inputs in
improving farming productivity and guaranteeing food security for the Filipinos, the
country realized the need for policies governing the development of the fertilizer
industry. According to International Islamic University of Malaysia (n.d), Organic
fertilizers are used to refer to the fertilizers that have gone through minimal processing.
This includes manure and compost, alongside with the materials that can be purchased
in the nearest gardening shop. On the other hand, inorganic fertilizers generally refer to
fertilizers that are synthetic or artificial and are typically manufactured from petroleum
products.

Planting a Tomato plant with fertilizers requires the average ratio of NPK
(Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium) that is about 10 – Nitrogen, 8 – Phosphorus, and 10 –
Potassium or merely a ratio of 10-8-10. The Tomato Seeds can be planted into any type
of soil except heavy clay soil.

This study has been initiated to investigate the potential of different fertilizers in
planting a tomato plant. Furthermore, the study aims to determine the effectiveness of
the different soil-setups to the growth of the tomato plant.

The Researchers has determined if there is a significant difference between

organic and inorganic fertilizer in growing a tomato plant in terms of: (1) height of the
plant, (2) number of leaves, (3) length of roots.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study has sought to determine the effectiveness of the different soil setups to the
growth of the tomato plant. Moreover, the study has attempted to answer the following
research questions:

1. Determine the yield of the effectiveness of 3 soil-setups to the growth

of the tomato plant in terms of:
a) height of the plant;
b) number of leaves;
c) length of roots;

2. Determine the level of the effectiveness of 3 soil-setups in the growth

of the tomato plant in terms of:
a) height of the plant;
b) number of leaves;
c) length of roots;

3. What is the preferable soil-setup based from the three gardeners and
two farmer respondents?

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

This study has determined the effectiveness of the different soil-setups to

the growth of the tomato plant.

Specifically, the researchers want to:

1.Determine the yield of the effectiveness of the three soil-setups to the growth
of a tomato plant in terms of:

a) height of the plants;

b) number of leaves;
c) length of roots;

2. To determine if there is a significant difference in the 3 soil-setups to the

growth of the tomato plant in terms of:
a) height of the plants;
b) number of leaves;
c) length of roots;

3. To identify the preferred soil-setup based from the three gardeners and two
chosen farmer respondents

SCOPE, LIMITATION, AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The research has focused on the following (1) determining the effectiveness of the
fertilizers applied in three soil-setups to the growth of the tomato plant between Organic
and Chemical fertilizers; (2) determining the significant difference using organic and
chemical fertilizers in the three soil-setups to the growth of tomato plant; (3) To
determine which type of fertilizer is preferred in planting tomato plant;

This study would be limited on the following: (1) the type of fertilizers in different soil
setups (2) the following parameters will be measured: number of leaves, height of the
plant and the length of the roots of the tomato plant. (3) people who farm indoors.

The delimitation for the research are the following: (1) the weather due to its
unpredictable changes; (2) the temperature can affect the growth of the tomato plants
due to its unpredictable changes;

The study has been conducted during the Academic year 2019 – 2020.

IMPORTANCE/ RELEVANCE OF THE PROBLEM

This study was aimed to determine the effectiveness of the different soil-setups
to the growth of the tomato plants.

The final results of the study have greatly benefited the following:

Department Of Science and Technology – The DOST (Department of Science and

Technology) can benefit the study to provide information about the nutrients of particular
fertilizer and to obtain what kind of fertilizer is effective to the growth of the Tomato
seeds.

Department of Agriculture - The DOA (Department of Agriculture) can benefit

this study to provide self-made fertilizers for the growth of the tomato plants in the
Philippines.

Farmers –The Farmers can benefit the study to use the research by obtaining new
information about Fertilizers applying in Tomato seeds.

Future Researchers – This study can benefit future researchers to provide

additional resources on the topic of fertilizers and tomato plants.
