THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTINGS

Introduction/Rationale

4
With the dominating occurrence of technology in our society and the constant

outgrowth of the millennial generation, everything is at the verge of enhancement.

Through the enhancements brought by technology, our lives have been influenced

remarkably. Advantages and disadvantages of enhancements have visibly affect the

nature and existence of humanity especially to students.

The importance of the study is to understand the nature of how modern

technologies can be use to improve a quality education for students to enhance their

academic performances. This is also to raise their awareness regarding the effects of

educational technology. Furthermore, identifying the advantages and disadvantages of

technology to learners tells whether it is appropriate to incorporate educational

technology for the development of education to the UCJHS students.

The majority of the University of Cebu Junior High School Department’s

populace have engaged themselves with the trend of smartphones, especially the Grade

10 students. The rapid evolution of technology has consequently left the students

engrossed by the device.

To take action on this study, as researchers we recommend to collect information

through the use of survey method which is passing out of questionnaires and the

interview method. These are used in order for us to visualize the possible effects of

modern technologies of students in our school as well as to determine whether it is an

advantage or disadvantage. Unraveling in this kind of activity could further lead to the

5
understanding of the study and to clearly see the role of technology in education the

students.

Theoretical Background

According to Bandura, Albert (1960), Social Cognitive Theory is derived from

constructing meaning and knowledge from social influences. An experiment was

6
conducted to prove how social influences including technology and media have adverse

effects on people especially learners. This theory thrives on the advancement of modern

technologies since it provides new and innovative method for social learning.

The theory is about learning by observing others, students can acquire new

behaviours and knowledge by simple observing a model. The relation of this theory to

our research is that students are able to observe and acquire knowledge through

technology. For instance, students are able to observe their learning material through the

use of the internet. Although, the students may rely too much in technology to learn

which is a major problem because it will result to the lack of human interaction. Learning

a material isn’t only one source, there needs to be a balance in acquiring information

whether it would be the use of technology or socially communicating to other people.

learning-theories-of-education-and-technology)

According to Piaget, Jean (1896), Theory of Constructivism states that students

are given tools to construct their own knowledge. This theory wants the educators to

adopt the idea that each learner will construct, obtain, and interpret their own knowledge

differently. The relevance of this theory to our research is its connection. The theory tells

about acquiring knowledge, this is where technology comes into play. Constructivism and

Technology are working hand in hand since through technology students are able to

collect information and because of how advance it is they can also develop a deeper

understanding. Although it is beneficial, there is also a number of reasons why it is not.

The downside of this theory is that some of the information that are found is in the

internet are yet to be proven. Students should be guided so that they will not carelessly

7
acquire and interpret false information. They might construct their knowledge believing

that it’s a fact not knowing that the information that they acquired is not verified. In

conclusion, it brings us to our research in determining the advantages and disadvantages

of educational technology to the UCJHS students.

According to Short, J. et al (1976), Social Presence Theory states the degree to

which one perceives the presence of participants in the communication. This theory

argues that media differ in the ability to convey the psychological perception that other

people are physically present, due to the different ability of media to transmit visual and

verbal cues. It speculates the outcome of an interaction to be resolved by the capacity of

the selected medium to support the type of communication required. Finally, Social

Presence Theory has also been found to be a strong indicator of satisfaction, that is, the

higher the sense of social presence conveyed by a medium, the higher the satisfaction

perceived by participants when communicating. However, this theory shadow us from the

reality between how media convey the psychological perception from the real world. This

is through how a media gives accessibility via visual and verbal information. One should

not also rely heavily on Internet or media-based mediums in gathering relevant

information.

According to Leon Festinger (1957), Cognitive Dissonance theory refers to the

situation involving our emotions, attitudes, beliefs and behavior. This feeling of a mental

dismay can lead to our own alteration in one of the attitudes, beliefs or behaviors to

8
reduced the discomfort and restore balance. Two factors affect the strength of the

dissonance: the number of dissonant beliefs, and the important attached to each belief.

There are three ways to eliminate dissonance: (1) reduce the importance of the dissonant

beliefs (2) add more consonant beliefs that outweigh the dissonant beliefs, or (3) change

the dissonant beliefs so that they are no longer inconsistent.

Cognitive dissonance theory is at play in scenarios where faculty have had either

a positive or negative experience. The theory may cause an attitude change and may lead

to mental confusions. As the results where primarily consistent with studies showing a

mix of attitudes and behaviors towards the quality of education prior to the administrative

and technology support.

Statement of the Problem

9
The main purpose of this research is to identify the Advantages and

Disadvantages of Modern Technologies To The UCJHS Students’ Studies.

In addition, this aims to answer the following:

1. Why do students use modern technologies for their studies?

2. What are the possible effects of modern technologies to the student’s studies?
3. In what way can we reduce the extent usage of technologies to minimize and

prevent the acquisition of its negative effects?

Statement of the Hypothesis

10
1. Students use technologies to have a convenient and easy way of doing their

studies and research; use technology for entertainments; and to get more

information’s and data’s related to their school works.

2. The possible effects could be harmful or beneficial depending on how students

use technology.
3. We could reduce and prevent the acquisition of negative effects of technologies to

students by setting a time limit of using technologies and discipline students to

use it responsibly.

Importance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to the following members of society:

11
Students: Students will know and understand the advantages and disadvantages

of modern technology to their studies and academic performances.

Teacher: Teachers will understand their students even more and provide a better

education to the students in order for the students to focus on their academic

performance.

Parents: Parents will understand the effects of Modern Technology to their

children’s behavior and support their children to achieve their academic goals.

Future Researchers: This proposed study will benefit the researchers and will

represent this study as their guide about the advantages and disadvantages of Modern

Technology to student’s studies.

Review of Related Literature

The Literature published by Eddy, John et al (1997), that Technology Assisted

Education (TAE) has been in existence for over 40 years. Since that time programs have

evolved to sophisticated distance education using satellites to distributive education using

14
computer systems such as Internet Cost, convenience to professors and students, and the

capacity to reach an increased number of students are some advantages to the university

that exploits technology. Lack of personal contact with a professor, role and process

training, and equipment failures are disadvantages that follow the introduction of

technology. This article explores several of the TAE models in use today and highlights

several advantages and disadvantages to the use of technology in education.

Technology Assisted Education (TAE) has proposed for a long-time. It's agenda

and programs have progressed to a higher and complex education system which involves

the use of satellites to distribute education such as the internet. The increasing number of

students enrolled in a university gives and advantage that exploits technology on the

other hand the absence and lack of communication with a professor rule process training

and equipment shows its disadvantages. This study drives the TAE models today.

A study was published by Magwa Simufurosa, et al (2013), which states that

modern technology is transforming the experience of growing up of adolescents.

Technology can facilitate deep exploration and integration of information, high-level

thinking and profound engagement by allowing students to design, explore, experiment,

access information and model complex phenomenon. High level engagement in social

networking causes students to lose focus on academic tasks and negatively affects their

15
academic results. Using media as both a source of information and a means of

communication are an integral part of curricular in many developing countries.

Modern Technology can assist the education of students as well as molding their

experiences as they age. The use of technology can allow them to gather, access and

explore information easily. Although this can invoke distractions that can let a student

lose their track in learning which negatively affects their academic results.

The literature published by Kaiser Family Foundation et al (2004), stated that the

purpose of the study is to synthesize research on the impacts of media multitasking-

interferes with attention and working memory, negatively affecting GPA, test

performance, recall, reading comprehension, note-taking, self-regulation, and efficiency.

In addition, students struggle to accurately assess the impact of media multitasking will

have on their academic performances. Further, research should attend to understand

effects of media multitasking in more diverse instructional contexts and for varied

academic tasks.

The reason of this study is to fuse the findings of the research regarding the

impact of media multitasking on academic performances. The article states that media

multitasking intervenes with the attention and working memory which affects the test

performance, GPA, reading comprehension and other factors negatively. Furthermore,

16
students have a hard time to accurately impose the impact of media multitasking will

have on their academic performances.

Additional research should be made to understand the effects of media multitasking in a

full manner for the valid academic performance tasks.

A study conducted by Posey G. Burgess, T. Eason. M., and Jones, Y. et al (2010)

stated that a new paradigm of education has developed, one that integrates the technology

of computers and the internet in education. With the introduction of sites such as

YouTube and Facebook, we have many technological tools available to us. The use of

computers, and the Internet, opens a new world of potential.

A new way of learning and educating has been introduced in this "Modern Era"

which is the use of technological education. Technology such as the internet creates a

huge impact to students that offers advantages as well as disadvantages in finding

information and the acquisition of knowledge. It benefits offer a flexible access a new

ways of communicating and assessing for students as well as the teachers. However, the

downside is the reliance of information service providers, credibility, viruses and in some

cases, low speed of connections.

17
A study was published by Constantino, G.D et al (2014), which states that

Educational Technology and Teacher Education have shared a conflicted relationship,

particularly where practicing teachers have not been trained in ET in a manner so that

they are able to coherently and efficiently incorporate the new educational technology

into their classroom and schools.

The new educational technology is now implemented in classrooms which

benefits the students since the youth are living in the world of modern technology.

However, the downside is that the teachers must try to adopt to the changes in order to

efficiently incorporate the implementation to the classroom as well as the students.

Research Design

18
As researchers, in order for us to gather and collect data, we decided to use the

normative survey method and the descriptive method. Through the use of normative

survey method, we apply the usage of questionnaire that is relevant to our study to gather

and collect information from the UCJHS students.

In the descriptive method, the gathered information are acquired from the reading

materials that are available which is connected to our study; examples are internet,

textbooks, and reference books.

These two methods will give us guidance to visualize and further understand the

possible advantages and disadvantages of modern technologies to the usage of UCJHS

students.

Research Environment

19
The study will be conducted in University of Cebu – Main Campus, Junior High

School Department. University of Cebu is a non-sectarian private institution at the core of

the city of Cebu corner Sanciangko and Osmeña Boulevard which has four campuses,

specifically (1) the Main Campus, which is located along Sanciangko Street; (2) the

Banilad Campus located along Gov. Cuenco Ave., in Banilad; (3) the UC-LM Campus,

which is the campus for students in the Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue area; and (4) the Uc

Maritime Educational Training Center (METC) which is situated along Alumnos St., in

Mambaling. Another Campus, the former UC-South Campus along Sanciangko Street,

was demolished and replaced by an expansion of UC’s sister company Elizabeth Mall (E-

Mall).

Higher Education Institution (HEIs) with deregulated status enjoy the same

privilege as autonomous HEIs, like being exempted from the issuance of a Special Order

(S.O.) for their graduates, priority in the grant of subsidies and other financial incentives/

assistance from the CHED whenever funds are available, and etc.

All of the institutions accredited by these three agencies certified FAAP are

private institutions. Under CHED’s Revised Policies and Guidelines on voluntary

Accreditation in Aid of Quality and Excellence and Higher Education, there are four

levels of program accreditation, with level IV being the highest.

With forty-two (42) years of quality education, the University of Cebu (UC) has

been awarded a Deregulated status by the commission on Higher Education (CHED),

while recognize by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission

20
on Accreditation (PACUCOA) as a learning institution with the most accredited

programs. The Junior High School Department of University of Cebu – Main Campus is

now at level 1 PACUCOA Accreditation.

Research Respondent

21
The randomly chosen respondents of the study will be the selected Grade 10

Junior High School students, enrolled in University of Cebu – Main Campus, this school

year 2019 – 2020. There will be 300 Junior High School students involved in the study.

The researchers will be choosing thirty (30) respondents each from grade ten (10)

selected sections.

Research Instruments

The study will be using two kinds of instruments. Survey questionnaire checklists

and researched works will be used by the researchers. The questionnaire checklist will

contain at least 15 questions that are answerable by a yes and no. These questionnaires

will be administered to the Three hundred (300) Grade 10 students of the Junior High

School Department in the University of Cebu – Main Campus.

23
The researchers will also do research for any additional data and information

pertinent to the study. Reference books, magazines, textbooks, internet, periodicals,

published, unpublished materials available and internet are some of our sources of

information to help us determine the effects of academic failures among our schoolmates.

Data Gathering

Before concluding a survey, a permit will be secured from the Junior High School

Principal’s Office. After the approval of our permit from Dr. Andrea M. Ando, a prepared

survey questionnaire will be distinguished to the respondents who have experienced

modern technology.

24
This survey will be administered to the three hundred (300) respondents in a

given time and date, which will be held for two days; January 30 and 31, 2020. On the

first day, the questionnaires will be disseminated to the first half of our total respondents.

On the second day, the remaining half of the total respondents will be continued. On the

third day, we will gather, evaluate and finalize the data, then tabulate and compare before

proceeding to statistical analysis.

Statistical Analysis

To evaluate the percentage of the advantages and disadvantages of modern

technology to the students in relation to their classroom attendance and performance, the

formula used will be:

25
NR
P= x 100
TR

Where:

P = percentage of the Advantages and Disadvantages of Modern Technologies to

the UCJHS Students’ Studies.

NR = number of respondents who answered yes.

TR = total respondents (actual) who answered the given questionnaire.
