PART B — (5  5 = 25 marks)

Answer any FIVE questions.

13. Define Operation Research and discuss its

importance in Operation Research.

14. What are the advantages of linear programming

problem?

15. What do you understand by a queue give some

importance applications of Queuing Theory?

16. The manager of an oil refinery must decide on the

optimal mix of two possible blending process of
which the input and output per production run are
given as follows :
Input (units) Output (units)
Process
Crude A Crude B Gasoline X Gasoline Y
1 5 3 5 8
2 4 5 4 4

The maximum amount available of crude A and B

are 200 units and 150 units respectively market
requirements show that atleast 100 units of
gasoline X and 80 units of gasoline Y must be
produced. The profit per production run from
process 1 and process 2 are Rs. 300 and Rs. 400
respectively, formulate the above problem as a
linear programming model.

following restraints :
x  0; y  0

12x  12 y  840
3x  6 y  300
8x  4 y  480

under the above conditions maximize the function

5x  7 y .

18. A project work consists of four major jobs for which

four major contractors have submitted tenders.
The tender documents quoted in thousands of
rupees are given with the matrix as

22. Six jobs must be processed through three
machines. All the jobs are first processed on
machine A, then on B and then on C. For the
operations time given below, find a sequence such
that the total elapsed time from the beginning of
the firs job to the end of the last job is minimized.
Operation Time (hrs)

23. Players A and B play a game in which each player

have three coins (20p, 25p and 50p). Each of them
selects a coin without the knowledge of the other
person. If the sum of the values of the coins is an
even number, A wins B’s coins. If that sum is an
odd number, B wins A’s coin.

24. A company purchases a machine for Rs. 10,000.

The operation cost of the machine is expected to be
more or less the same during its life. The
maintenance cost of the machine is Rs. 2,000
during the first year of operation. It increases by
Rs. 800 from second year to fourth year of its
operation. During its fifth year of operation, it is
Rs. 6,000 and then onwards, it increases by
Rs. 1,000 every year. The interest rate is 12%.
Determine the economic life of the machine.
